ATP Newsletter May 2017

The Administrators, Teachers & Parents (ATP) team asks parents to help identify opportunities and ideas to enhance the student and family experience at St. Stephen. The ATP met in May to discuss parent submissions and several ATP agenda items. 8th Grade Parent Exit Survey If you are an 8th grade parent, please take a few minutes to complete the 8th Grade Parent Exit Survey sent last week from school administration. If you need the link re-sent to you, please contact Mrs. Ullmann at [email protected] or contact Kimberly Sennett at [email protected]. Recent Alumni Survey The ATP is putting together a survey for recent alumni to query information about the transition from St. Stephen to high school, honors programs, spiritual activities, and extracurricular activities. We need your help! We are gathering contact information for recent alumni to include students currently in grades 9-12. Please forward name, address, email, phone, current grade and high school name to Mrs. Ullmann at [email protected]. Parent Submissions Silent Lunches: A parent raised concern about an entire class having a silent lunch period when the entire class is not deserving of a silent lunch. The parent suggested that teachers differentiate between the children who are behaving and the children not following directions. Mrs. Patrick responded that taking time during the lunch period for behavior modification is used in an attempt to solve recurring issues experienced by teachers during instructional time. She stated that children should only be expected to be silent for short periods of time (5-10 minutes). Mrs. Patrick will discuss this issue with the faculty. Field Trip Chaperones: A parent raised the issue of a limited number of parents being selected for field trips and requested that parents who are not selected should be allowed to follow the bus to the field trip location. Mrs. Patrick said she understands and appreciates that so many parents want to chaperone field trips. Unfortunately, the school has to place limits on parent chaperones to follow the guidelines and limitations set forth by the facilities each class visits. All of the facilities limit the number of adults participating on tours. These are educational field trips and extra adults would not be included on any tour. Even in public places like the Science Center or Fort McHenry, parents who purchase tickets at the venue would be separated from the class groups.

ATP Newsletter May 2017

Substance Abuse Program: A parent suggested that the school host a special program to address substance abuse, particularly the heroin epidemic, to educate students. Mrs. Patrick and Mrs. Ullmann appreciated this suggestion, and they have charged the ATP with coordinating a program during the 2017-2018 school year. ATP Membership Get involved with the ATP! We are looking for parents from all grade levels that want to work with school administration to represent parents and make a positive difference at our school. If you are interested in our committee, visit the ATP web page under the parent section of the school web site for more information. Feel free to email Kimberly Sennett at [email protected]. Our meetings resume in Fall 2017. Share Your Ideas! Join Us! The ATP meets with Mrs. Patrick and Mrs. Ullmann to help find solutions to parent concerns, suggest and develop student programs, and implement ideas from the administration. If you would like to share your ideas or concerns with the ATP, please visit our page on the school web site and fill out a submission form. Every submission is presented. If you prefer, you can remain anonymous. We always welcome new members. Meetings are announced on the school calendar.
