Acts 7:48-50 Billy Graham It was with a mixture of sadness and thankfulness that I heard that Billy Graham died through the week. For some of our younger members it will be hard to understand the way the Lord used “Big Billy” through the years. To know that he preached the good news of Jesus to packed out sports stadiums around the world seems so unlikely today… but he did just that. I’m sure there will be some reading this who were influenced, encouraged, perhaps even converted through the ministry of Billy Graham. It is hard to get exact figures when it comes to Billy Graham’s ministry but best estimates say that he preached to live audiences of around 215 million people in over 185 countries. In fact one statistic I read through the week was that in 1957 he ran nightly “sold-out crusades” at Madison Square Garden that lasted sixteen weeks… isn’t that mind-blowing? However, he didn’t just preach to huge crowds, he was a personal spiritual advisor to every US President from Harry Truman through to Barack Obama. To be able to do that is a wonderful gift. He was able to speak to people from different cultures, countries, backgrounds and values in a way that they could understand and relate to. More than that, he could show the need for Jesus and the glory of Jesus that captured people’s hearts and minds. However, it was not just his outward “achievements” that spoke clearly of his love for the Lord. In his personal life he was married to Ruth for nearly 64 years and they had five children. Their son Franklin now runs the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Unlike many high-profile Christian leaders I am not aware of a single, serious controversy that surrounded his ministry or life. Let’s give thanks for the life and ministry of Billy Graham and the way the Lord used him and his family to bear so much fruit over the years throughout the world. The quote of Billy Graham that I have heard and seen the most over the last few days is very apt. It is actually a variation of some words D. L Moody wrote in his autobiography (another wonderful evangelist used by God and a hero of Billy Graham’s). The quote is… Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God. Jay

PRAYER

We’re delighted to have you with us today, especially if you’re visiting and we look

forward to making you feel very welcome!

If you’d like any information about the children’s programmes today, or about any of our

midweek ministries, please speak to one of the WELCOMERS (ORANGE NAMETAG) and if

you haven’t already received a WELCOME PACK please ask for one.

If you’re visiting, please don’t feel obligated to give today.

We hope you can join us for morning tea at the back of the main hall after the meeting.

You are very welcome to join us in a corporate time of

prayer at 10am every Sunday before the service - exit

from rear of the hall, turn right then it’s in the office on

the left past the Vice Principals Office. If you would like

prayer for anything after the service, look out for the

people at the back of the hall wearing a BLUE NAMETAG -

Edna Brooker & Sheryn Sharp TODAY’s Prayer Team:

SUNDAY: We give thanks for the life and ministry of Billy Graham and the way the Lord used

him and his family to bear so much fruit over the years throughout the world.

MONDAY: We pray for God’s strength to face today’s hard and troubled times with the

confidence of knowing that His strength is made perfect in our weakness. We thank Him that our

strength comes from Him and that His grace is sufficient for all the tasks and duties that will

cross our daily paths – not only for today but for the rest of our journey through life.

TUESDAY: Please be praying for the Ballinger family as they prepare to leave the UK soon.

WEDNESDAY: Orientation weeks at our Universities around the country is in progress and

Cam & Gracie Mackenzie (Dunedin) and Geoff & Liz Robson (Chch) ask that we join them in

prayer for the Holy Spirit to capture the attention and curiosity of students they connect with

over the next month and that as these students encounter Christ, they would be deeply

transformed by the gospel and go on as Christ’s ambassadors.

THURSDAY : We ask that God would give us vision and understanding to know what to pray,

when to pray and how to pray in His will.

FRIDAY: The Youth Group give thanks for the opportunity of getting to know Sara & Macko over

the past year and we pray that they will have a safe return to their families in Japan and would

be able to find a youth group over there.

SATURDAY: Today the Diocesan Synod meet to discuss Motion 29. Please pray that all

would willingly submit to the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives, that they would be open to

both seeking and doing God’s will as they make decisions and look to what the future may

look like and that God would enable and equip them to fulfil His plan and His purpose.

25 Feb & 4 Mar - Genesis 12-21 Nothing stops God from keeping His

promise: Isaac is born to really old
