Pentecost Sunday

2

Gospel John 20:19-23 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Reading I Acts 2:1-11 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34 Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! How manifold are your works, O Lord! the earth is full of your creatures; Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in his works! Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the LORD. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. If you take away their breath, they perish and return to their dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

Reading II 1 Corinthians 12: 3b-7, 12-13 Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

Month of June The Way of the Heart We pray that all those who suffer may find their way in life, allowing themselves to be touched by the Heart of Jesus.

Sequence Come, Holy Spirit, come!

And from your celestial home Shed a ray of light divine!

Come, Father of the poor! Come, source of all our store!

Come, within our bosoms shine. You, of comforters the best;

You, the soul’s most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below;

In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe. O most blessed Light divine,

Shine within these hearts of yours, And our inmost being fill!

Where you are not, we have naught, Nothing good in deed or thought, Nothing free from taint of ill.

Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour your dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away: Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray. On the faithful, who adore

And confess you, evermore In your sevenfold gift descend;

Give them virtue’s sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord;

Give them joys that never end. Amen. Alleluia.

From Fr. Albert Dear Brothers and Sisters, In this unprecedented time, while strongly fighting Covid -19, we are also returning to our church on the day of Pentecost to praise and worship God. I am sure the Holy Spirit will stand with us throughout. This weekend we are celebrating Pentecost Sunday, the day when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples and the church was founded. Pentecost means the fiftieth day after the Resurrection. On this day a great transformation took place in the small group of disciples. The spirit came upon the timid disciples in the form of tongues of fire and transformed them into true messengers of Jesus. Once they received the Spirit, they went out boldly and preached to all in Jerusalem and elsewhere. On the day of Pentecost, Jesus wants us to know the freedom of living in his Spirit. We are called to recognize the gift of the Holy Spirit, realizing that God’s very life, breath and energy lives in all believers. The same Spirit is given to each of us. We are all baptized by one Spirit into one body and that the Spirit which raised Jesus from the dead will raise us also. As a family of God, we are all united again to pray for healing and revival during this challenging time. The church is going to be kept open for public Masses with restrictions and safety measures place. So, Dear friends, through the power of the Spirit we ask for the grace to be forgiven and the grace to forgive. As Jesus empowers his disciples with the new life of his Spirit, we look for the gift of peace and joy from the same Spirit as we open our parish church for public Masses on Sundays. Pentecost Sunday – Reflections

• The feast of Pentecost marks the beginning of the Church - the birthday of the Holy Mother Church. • Christ fills His Church with the power of His Spirit and sends us out

into the world to bring peace, unity, joy, forgiveness, love and eternal life to all humankind.

• The Spirit we have received, commissions and empowers us to move out in full force yet, with wisdom and gentility in order to testify to the lordship of Christ.

In Christ Fr. Albert

Prayer for the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, fan into flame the gifts I received in my Baptism and Confirmation.

I want to receive the fire of Your love as Your disciples did at Pentecost.

Come with wonder and awe, with wisdom, understanding, and counsel,

with courage and faith in You. Holy Spirit, may my actions witness

to Your presence in my life. Help me to see the ways my strengths

can serve others in their weakness. In all my interactions, I want to radiate

love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Breathe new life into the world through me. Amen.

Everyday Stewardship Recognize God in Your Ordinary Moments We Are Never Alone My children want my help sometimes, and other times, not so much. I remember being a teenager and young adult myself. At times, I thought I knew everything. I didn’t need help because I was just so darn smart. Truth is, I needed to find my own way. I needed to stretch my wings and prove to myself and my family I could fly. I assume that is what is happening with my own children as well. It just seems so different now that I’m the parent. Human beings need help. We need community, and we need to rely on one another. At Pentecost, we reflect on Jesus sending to the Church a helper, the Holy Spirit. God interacting with us in this manner means we are never truly alone. We focus most of the time on the Spirit of God as the assistance we need, and we do need Him for sure. However, since it is that very same Spirit that turned us into “Church” from a band of people looking to carry on after Jesus’ ascension, at Pentecost we gained more than divine help: we gained each other. Today, the Church needs help in a profound way. We need to lean on the Holy Spirit to blow through the Church with a profound renewal. But we cannot forget that we have been given each other to lean on as well. We are a gift to each other, and together with the Spirit’s help, we are the Body of Christ here on earth. We must be strong and stand for one another. If we do that, this Pentecost will bear fruit that will be with us for many Pentecosts to come. —Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi

Why Do We Do That? Catholic Life Explained: Pentecost Question: Why do we celebrate Pentecost when we do? Answer: The book of Acts unpacks the events immediately following Jesus’ ascension into heaven. The Apostles and other disciples were told to pray in Jerusalem and await another outpouring of the Holy Spirit. As the weeks ticked on, the Jewish Festival of Weeks approached. This festival took place 50 days after Passover and celebrated the giving of the law on Mount Sinai. The Festival of Weeks (or “Pentecost” in Greek) was a great pilgrimage feast, with Jews from all over the ancient world convening on Jerusalem for the celebration. It was on Pentecost that God chose to send the Holy Spirit. Here, the new law of love was etched into the hearts of the disciples. As he burst out onto the balcony above the multinational crowd, Peter proclaimed the message of the resurrection, and the Holy Spirit enabled every listener to hear in their native language. 3,000 people were baptized that day! The disciples — and every baptized person — receives the gifts and zeal necessary to bring a new message of salvation to the people of God. ©LPi

Gospel Meditation Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture Pentecost Sunday You can feel so small standing by the seashore. The vastness of all that is before you expands much farther than your eye can see. What is happening on the other side? As tides continue to ebb and flow, what occurs as they come and go remains largely a mystery and the effects of their presence unknown in your sight. Yet, things are moving and changing as you gaze upon the water, as the thumbprint of their presence is left behind. The greater the wind and wave, the greater the effect. But even a gentle breeze leaves its humble mark upon the seashore on which you stand. The smallest pebble still makes a ripple in the great blue expanse of ocean waters. It doesn’t need to be big. You never know the full impact of your smallest gesture or simplest of words. A yes or no, agree or disagree, here or there, this or that can influence time and history in ways you may never know. The Holy Spirit is like that: fierce and torrential, and then almost still and silent, creating and recreating nonetheless. Coming as a gentle breeze or a gusty wind, God’s Holy Spirit continues to move over, around, and into the waters of our lives. The Spirit brings fruit and unknown possibilities to what we humbly bring with us and that same Spirit eventually brings all to fulfillment in Christ. The first disciples didn’t have much. They possessed simple faith and a willingness to go into unchartered territory with a love of their friend-God, humble offerings, and a knowledge that they were not alone. This allowed them to do amazing things with very little. Do you believe that you are being led and that you have a purposeful life? We often do not realize our value because we do not think that the little we have is good enough. How wrong we are! A little flour mixed with water and embraced by a prayer of blessing transforms simple offerings into the magnificent Eucharistic presence of God. If the Holy Spirit can do such amazing things with these humble gifts of the earth, even more can happen with you. Don’t underestimate the value of the smile you gave a stranger, the door held open for an elderly widow, the listening ear offered to one who was lonely, the tolerance given to the wounded soul who is angry, and the loving shoulder you offered as a cradle under the head of someone in pain. Modest gifts offered with love can be transformed by the Spirit into wondrous blessings you may never know. It’s Pentecost. Trust. You are not alone. ©LPi

To all our 2020 Graduates Our prayers are with you as you start another chapter in your lives.

Graduation Prayer Dear God, those whom you called to do great things for you were often tested first. You did so, not to frustrate them, but to bring out what you saw as the best in them. Joseph was raised from slavery to royalty, and you gave him grace to forgive when he'd been wronged. Solomon was raised from prince to king, and you granted him wisdom to govern his people. Jeremiah was raised from youth to prophet, and you gave him courage to proclaim your truth. Today begins a new chapter in the lives of these graduates. Give them the wisdom to make wise decisions, just as you gave your servants

guidance in ages past. Amen. 2007 Liturgical Publications Inc.

Precautions for Returning to Mass Attendance at Weekend Masses The faithful should be aware that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains dispensed until further notice. All those as defined by the health department as more vulnerable (i.e., 60+ years of age, those with compromised immune systems, those with underlying health conditions, those who are especially anxious about being in a large group, etc.) are encouraged to stay home. For those who are planning on attending, we request that you either sign up on the parish website or call the parish office. This will give us an idea as to the number of people planning to attend each weekend Mass. Keep in mind that we can only have 25% of the total capacity. St. Therese capacity will be 100 people. Guidelines for Returning to Mass on Weekends As we prepare to return to public celebration of Mass on weekends, here are some guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. A full list of precautions can be seen on our parish website.

Safety precautions: Sanitize your hands before entering and leaving church. Masks are strongly encouraged. Put on a face mask

before entering church. It is advised that attendees wash their clothes following the Mass.

Attendance: Please note that attendance at each Mass is limited to 100 people.

Entrances will be limited: We will use the front and south doors only. The elevator entrance will remain open for the elderly and

people with disabilities. Pew distancing: Social distancing of a minimum of 6 feet between

people not living in the same household must be followed. We will have every third pew available and marked by Mass times.

Pew resources: Hymnals, and other paper resources in the pews will be removed.

Communion: Ushers will direct the Communion line. There will be markings on the floor to help you preserve social distancing of 6 feet. Only one single-file line is permitted to approach the

minister. Collection: You may place your tithing and offertory in the containers

provided at the entrances. Bulletins: Bulletins will be passed out by the ushers after Mass.

Please note the parish bulletin is available on our website for easy viewing.

Elevator: Only two people should be in the elevator at one time unless you are from the same household. Cleaning: Volunteer cleaners will be sanitizing pews, entrances and

all other facilities used before each Mass.

A committee has been formed to make sure that all the precautionary steps are taken for the safe return of our parishioners to St. Therese Parish. This team is led by our compliance manager, Michelle Reedy. Team members are Richard Besaida, Larry Zschernitz, Maria Marciulionis, Julie Dozer, Lynn Hildebrandt, LeeAnn Seitz, Dcn.
