Nineveh undergoes a forty- day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out “Repent!” before he calls his new followers. “Come after me,” Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today’s Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for com- pletely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experience conse- quences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation. THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out “Repent!” before he calls his new followers. “Come after me,” Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today’s Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for com-pletely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Please join us for a powerful talk by the renowned Pro-life leader, Joseph Scheidler, on Sunday, January 28, 7:00pm at Kolbe Academy & Trinity Prep. The founder of Pro-Life Action League, Scheidler has been on the front lines of fighting abortion, saving babies and helping mothers for 40 years. He won a land-mark case at the Supreme Court against NOW, and has inspired countless young Pro-life leaders every-where to courageously stand up for the sanctity of Life. Come be inspired! Kolbe-Trinity is at 2055 Red-wood Rd., Napa. No charge.

WALK FOR LIFE - SATURDAY JANUARY 27TH 2018

This weekend the readings invite us to reflect on proclaiming the Gospel. Jonah is called to preach in Ni-neveh and Jesus calls Simon and Andrew to follow him. All of us who are Catholic are called to proclaim the Gospel as well. Parents have a great privilege to teach the faith to their children. Unfortunately, I have seen some parents from the religious education drop off their children during Mass or right before Mass ends to sign their Mass attendance card and even only to pick them up after Mass. Parents are the primary teachers of the faith to their children. I would ask the parents of the children that are in the par-ish religious education program, to please come with their children to Mass and be present at Mass from the beginning to the end. In this very simple way we teach the children our Faith, but also to have a deep-er relationship with God and His Holy Church. I will continue to pray, especially for the parents, that we may all continue to proclaim the Gospel in all that we do.

May God continue to bless all our parish families, especially the children in our religious education pro-gram of St. Thomas Aquinas,

Fr. Abel

P. Abel

Gospel Mk 1:14-20

PAGE SIX 1/21/2018

R. Alleluia, alleluia. The kingdom of God is at hand.

Repent and believe in the Gospel. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

R. Aleluya, aleluya.

R. Aleluya.

After John had been arrested, Je-sus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men." Then they abandoned their nets and fol-lowed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their fa-ther Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.
