ADORATION is back! Initially, Ad-oration will be available on Tuesdays between the hours of 9-11. If interest grows, we will look at extending the available hours. If a funeral falls on Tuesday, Adoration will not be available that day. To expand the hours and keep Adoration available, it is VERY important that there be at least two per-

sons always present to adore Christ in the monstrance. If you are interested, please contact Stephen Farlow at [email protected] or 936-355-1855.

FEAST OF FAITH . . . Liturgy and the Holy Trinity The Trinity is the central mystery of our faith. We believe that God is one, yet three: total unity and rich diversity. God is not a monolith, but a dynamic community of persons, a perfect, loving harmony of three. And the liturgy is the work of the Trinity. We begin all our liturgical celebrations with the sign of the cross, a reminder of our Trinitarian baptism, and the simplest of all professions of our faith. We believe that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and we gather in the name of this triune God. Throughout the Mass, we address our prayers to God the Father, through Christ our Lord, in the Spirit’s power. And the Father hears our prayer, transforming bread and wine into the Body and Blood of his Son by the Holy Spirit. The Church is “the sacrament of trinitarian communion” (Sacramentum Caritatis, 16). It is the Trinity who holds us together as well. In the words of Saint Cyprian, we are “a people made one by the unity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” (quoted in Sacramentum Caritatis, 16). —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. FIESTA DE LA FE . . . ——Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Fellow Parishioners

St, Thomas the Apostle Church has received a certificate of occupancy from the city of Huntsville to occupy and use the first floor of the Parish Family Life Center. The use of the facility is available to all church members and church organizations by contacting Sylvia in the church office and reserving the space needed.

I have been asked by several people why the cost of the building increased. The original cost included the cost of the first floor only and had a building classification of a gymnasium. In an early construction meeting, a change in function decision was made that converted the building use from a gymnasium-type facility to a multi-purpose building. This change-in-use of the building resulted in a different building classification. The new classification moved the building to a more stringent building code in the Huntsville Building Codes. As a result, major construction changes were required to meet new code requirements. These included: structural; heating and cooling issues; and, thermal loss issues. The changes increased the cost of the building $350 to 400 thousand dollars. The Temporary Occupancy License issued by the City of Huntsville now has the facility rated to handle gatherings of 1,000 to 1,200 people.

Construction is progressing on the second floor. This area provides a large adult meeting room, a gathering room with a coffee counter, and 4 large meeting rooms. At the present time, stud-walls have been erected and sheetrock applied to one side of the wall. After the completion of the electrical conduit construction, the insulation will be added, then the second side of sheetrock will be installed.

The Fire of Your Love: Parousia

By Will Oliver

In my last column, I wrote of the Mass and its two parts—the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. I also mentioned the Parousia, the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Dr. Scott Hahn released a free video series through the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology for Lent (there is now a fee to stream or purchase the DVDs). I watched the entire ten-part series and found it well done, informative, and enjoyable to watch, so I thought I would mention the study course here. Dr. Scott Hahn was a Protestant trained minister who was ardently anti-Catholic, but while in the seminary, studying to become a Biblical Theologian, he began researching the early Church. He decided to attend Mass one day to see the heresies of the Catholic Church and he was greatly surprised, almost shocked, at how Biblically-based the Mass truly was. For years, he had ridiculed Catholics for knowing nothing of the Bible, nor incorporating it into their prayer life. That Mass changed all that and he entered the Church in 1986. Ever since, he has continued his work as a Biblical Theologian steeped in the Catholic faith. The St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, which he helped found, is a nonprofit research and educational institute dedicated to “Scripture study from the heart of the Church.” In light of the pandemic and the closing of churches, Dr. Hahn wanted to find a way to encourage Catholics to return to Mass, by demonstrating why their very lives depend upon it, for, as he explains, “It’s the summit of God’s plan for our salvation.” The 10-part series explores the question: “Where do we find the Mass in the Bible?” Dr. Hahn’s answer to that question is almost overwhelming in the breadth and depth that he presents in the videos. Filmed in what appears to be his own home, he presents each lesson with a mixture of video interview angles, live action scenes, and graphics. In the first lesson, “Where is the Mass in the Bible?” Dr. Hahn tells his own personal journey to discovering the Parousia, the Bible and the Mass. In the second lesson, he discussed the meaning of God’s “covenant,” both the old and new, by demonstrating that all things in the old pointed toward Jesus, and that all things in the Gospels pointed toward humanity’s Salvation. In lesson three, he highlights the meaning of the “New Testament” as understood by the early Church, which is a very different perspective than the one we have today. More importantly, he asks the question of whether Christ’s crucifixion was an execution or a sacrifice, thus showing the important connections between the Old and New Testaments. This leads to lesson four, which focuses on the prefigurements of the Eucharist in the Old Testament. In the fifth lesson, Dr. Hahn discusses the four Gospels to uncover the types of the Eucharist in Christ’s infancy and his public ministry, all of which anticipates the ultimate fulfillment of the New Covenant that began with the Last Supper. In lesson six, Dr. Hahn is joined by his wife Kimberly, and together they discuss the Mass as found in the Acts of the Apostles, as well as the New Testament letters. Lesson seven focuses mostly on the Letter to the Hebrews and the Book of Revelation, demonstrating how both describe so many aspects of the Mass. The next lesson, eight, returns us back to Dr. Hahn’s first experience with the Mass and what he saw of the Bible in the first-half of Mass, the Liturgy of the Word, while lesson nine details the same for the second-half—the Liturgy of the Eucharist. In the final lesson, he discusses the term Parousia, explaining how it has been so misunderstood by Biblical scholars when he discusses the real Presence of the Lord explaining that “His Parousia is how He remains with us at every Mass, fulfilling God’s desire for humanity: communion with Him.” This was an excellent series and I highly recommend it.

EL MISTERIO DE LA SANTÍSIMA TRINIDAD . . . . Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CHURCH SECURITY INFORMATION

Following the church shootings last year near San Antonio the parish's Security Committee has taken steps ensure the safety of all St. Thomas the Apostle parishioners. The first step restricts access to the church during liturgical services. Once Mass has begun all doors into the church will be locked from the inside with the exception of the double doors facing 16th Street. Anyone arriving late for Mass will only be able to enter the church through the 16th Street doors. Parishioners will be able to exit the church through any of the locked doors as well as the doors fac-ing 16th Street. Signs will be posted around the church building to remind parishioners of the locked doors. The staff at St. Thomas the Apostle Church takes the safety and security of all the parishioners very seriously. We are confident that the steps taken at this time will minimize any problematic incidents.
