Volume 5, Issue 7 July 2017 ALL ARE WELCOME!

Reflections from our Rector:

Rooted in the Liturgy that sustains us

and inspires us to be Christ in our community and the world.

We are back on track with our months and cranking right along with our ministries and

activities. This year is as busy as we have ever seen, and the eclipse should put us all right over

the edge! Estimates range from 2,000 to 8,000 additional people in the Dubois area for that

handful of days. If you are staying around Dubois for all of the excitement, there are several

recommended preparations.

You may want to stock up on food, water, and fuel a couple of weeks beforehand. While local

businesses are planning ahead, they have only so much storage space for inventory, and they

will probably have 2 to 5 times the customers to satisfy. Just think, having things at home

means not having to brave the traffic to get to the store.

If you don’t have a land phone line, consider getting one. We’ve all been through those high

phone traffic times—at Christmas, for example—when all the circuits are busy or you just can’t

complete a call because systems aren’t working. Not to mention when the towers are down.

And, if you’re planning on watching the eclipse, make certain you have eclipse glasses.

Sunglasses will not work. Polarized lenses will not work. You can permanently damage your

eyesight if you look directly at the sun with either of those. Please do not be an eclipse

casualty.

And remember, as we find ourselves immersed in summer “doings,” we also need to remember

about being: leaving time in our lives to learn more about ourselves and our faith, deepen our

spiritual lives, and even simply rest.

Don’t forget to schedule time to go apart from the crowds and be with God. Jesus modeled this

behavior in his own life because, as one who is perfectly human as well as perfectly divine, he

wants us to understand that we NEED this. It is part of who we are and how we are made: to

commune with our Creator and nurture and restore that relationship on a regular basis.

We are human beings, not human doings, for a reason. Enjoy the blessings the summer brings,

rejoice in the glory of all of God’s creation, and set aside space in your days and weeks to open

your heart to the living and loving presence of the Holy One.

St. Thomas is committed to making everything we say and do in this world a sign of Christ’s

presence, a presence that is Loving. Liberating. Life Giving.

Worship in the Outdoors!

On Sunday, July 16th, Mary Ishaque will host our

Sunday service at Warm River Ranch, 5275 US Hwy

26, followed by a bring-your-own-pizza-topping

brunch, with our custom pizzas cooked fresh right by

the river. Mary will provide the dough, cheese, sauce,

pepperoni, sausage, Canadian bacon, and pineapple.

Please bring any other toppings you would like on

your creation. Salads to pass will also be welcome.

Dessert will be ice cream! We’ll worship in the house

if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

As we move into our busy summer ministries,

please remember to keep your pledge up-to-

date so that St. Thomas can continue our work

and worship. If you have not pledged but

would like to, please contact Connie at 455-

2313 or stop by the office for a pledge card.

Vestry Doings

Summer is in full swing around St. Thomas’, and the vestry is busy getting needed repairs and upkeep

started while the weather is warm. The stone rebuild project has started, the roof leaks have been

repaired, the smoke alarms are all up and functioning, and the sprinkler system has been repaired and is

working again.

The first AED (Automated External Defebrillator) training was held. Four people attended. Another

class will be scheduled so that more people can take advantage the training. Please call the office at 455-

2313 to put your name on the list if you are interested in attending the next training.

Look for a letter from our Bookkeeper that will let you know the amount she has recorded for your yearly

pledges to date. Please let her know if you believe the amount is not correct. The vestry would like to

thank you for your support of our church!

Participation in the vestry meetings is welcome! To further that participation, the vestry has decided that

the Agenda for the Vestry Meeting will be published in the preceding Sunday’s bulletin, and that vestry

minutes will be emailed to members.

Suicide Prevention Training

St. Thomas Episcopal Church and Prevention Management Organization will be hosting a suicide

prevention training on Monday, July 10 2017. The training is free and open to the public, so please invite

anyone you know to join us. The session will be from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the Headwaters Center. Please

call the church office at 455-2313 if you are interested in coming.

The training is called QPR, which stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer—the 3 simple steps anyone

can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help

save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a

suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of people

like you are saying “Yes” to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.

At the QPR training you will learn to:

Recognize the warning signs of suicide

Know how to offer hope

Know how to get help and save a life

The Diocese of Wyoming began its suicide prevention initiative in 2010 and set a goal to have 10% of

church members trained in QPR by 2020. We are already at 9%. Please help us reach our goal and save

the lives of the people we love.

Deanery Visit to Hank Raymond Camp

Diocesan Council recently took a day to visit Hank Raymond Camp in Esterbrook to discern its

future use. After much prayerful conversation it was determined that representatives from each

region and deanery should coordinate a visit led by the regional representative and the area Dean.

The Diocese will make arrangements for the gate to be unlocked and for visitors to have access to

buildings on the property. The congregations in the Wind River Deanery will be selecting a date

for representatives to travel to Esterbrook, tour the camp and worship using the Wyoming

Eucharist, and make a report back to the full Council or convention as to potential visions for use

of the camp property. The Council felt it would be important for more voices to have an

opportunity to determine the future of this property.

June 2017 Bicyclist/Hiker Report

The bicyclists are “on a roll”! This month we hosted a large group of 38 from Ability

Experience, and Kiwanis provided them with a delicious meal. John McPhail continues to

coordinate St. Thomas’ bicyclist/hiker ministry this summer.

For June:

113 cyclists and hikers have stayed overnight at St. Thomas’ June 1 through June 29.

Visitors represented 24 states: Alabama, California, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky,

Pennsylvania, New York, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan,

Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, , South Dakota, Texas, Utah,

Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

International visitors represented 6 countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, the

Netherlands, Belgium and France.

The “Piggy Bank” donations for the month of June amounted to $192.36.

Some notes from our guests:

Thanks for bringing together a motley crew of bikers for a night of safe community time!

Kerry Gross, Camden, Maine

What an awesome stay at just the needed time! Everyone was so friendly and hospitable!

Thanks for the genuine ministry to total strangers! Don Webb, Hedgesville, West Virginia

We’re biking in honor of our father who passed last year. He would have loved your generous

spirit. Thanks so much for letting us stay! Lucas and Bess Englehardt Rochester, New York

At the end of a loooong windy day and a derailer issue, having a safe, clean place to stay made

my day. Thank you so much for a floor to sleep on, kitchen to cook in, and warmth. Bobby

Leonard, Richmond, Virginia

Summer Square Dances

Summer Square Dances sponsored by Episcopal Church Women are continuing every Tuesday

through August 22 at 8-9:30 pm in the Frontier Room of the Rustic Pine. Adults $4, children $2,

Ice Cream Social

The 4th of July Homemade Ice Cream Social was held at 3 pm on Tuesday, July 4th on St.

Thomas’ front lawn and was a big success! We served over 220 people homemade vanilla,

strawberry, and chocolate ice cream, and our visiting bicyclists helped set up and clean up!

Diocesan Convention Banner

This year’s convention theme is, “If Jesus showed up today, what in your congregation would

make him say, ‘Wow!’?” Each congregation in the diocese will bring a banner to illustrate

their Wow. The banner blank is provided, and each parish is asked to decorate their blank

using any medium (paint, marker, embroidery, cross-stitch, iron-ons, glue-ons, sew-ons, etc.)

that will illustrate what would impress Jesus. We are to decorate only one side of the banner

and include the name and city of our church.

What’s St. Thomas’ Wow? Good question! What is it that would knock Jesus’ socks off if he

came back today? What shows us growing as disciples of Jesus? What pushes back against

the prevailing culture’s assumptions and expectations and says, “No, God calls us to be

something different than what the world values”? Think about what those things are and start

sharing them with the Vestry. Our very best will be offered up on our banner.

And, consider if you would be willing to use your artistic and/or craft skills to decorate the

banner. We want something that we are proud to share, not just this year, but in years to come.
