Thank you for your support.

Scriptural Reflection for the Week “We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors”. (See 2 Maccabees 7:1-2) To some people the above words sound antiquated and idealistic; no longer applicable for our lives today. Yet, such a person could be considered quite naïve or even ignorant when it comes to the state of the world today. Each day we hear of the per-secution and killing of people of Faith in many parts of the world. But even with such awareness, we may only see the problem as somewhat removed and distant from us. But this would be a mistake. Because whereas we may not have a gun pointed at us or a knife at our throat, there is just as insidious a threat that comes from a prevailing cul-ture where God is not allowed to exist right here, in a coun-try founded upon the premise of religious freedom for all. We know how those who truly aspire to live in accord with the moral dictates of their religion can be penalized and ostracized. Because many are weak and/or ignorant of their Faith, there is little or no courage to resist the powers that be wishing to deny this most basic of human rights. Would we all be willing to die for our Catholic Faith? Would we all be willing to speak up when needed and necessary? Hour of Prayer for Our Country at St. Catherine’s Please join us in prayer on MONDAY, November 7th from 7:30pm to 8:30pm in the Saint Catherine Chapel as we offer prayer for our country as we are about to elect a new president. May we all be responsible in forming our con-sciences according to the teachings of our Lord and His Church so as to make the best possible choice in voting on Election Day. Congratulations! to Maureen Hannah of our Parish who will be receiving the St. Agnes Medal of Service award from Bishop Murphy on November 20th at St. Agnes Cathedral in recognition of their service to our Parish. Community Bible Study Spread the Good Word! Come and see what is helping people discover God’s love as they break open the Word of God! Every Thursday at 7:30pm in the school cafeteria. Hurricane Relief Donations Those wishing to assist those affected by the recent hurri-cane should place their offering in a simple white envelope and mark it “HURRICANE RELIEF”. You may place it in any collection between now and November 6th. Thank you for your help to those in need.

Sanctuary Redesign Started this past Monday and is expected to last approxi-mately three months. All Masses will continue to be held in the church during that time period. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

One Final Thought “God loves a cheerful giver, He gives most who gives with Joy. If in the work He gives you, you have difficulties and you can accept them with joy, with a big smile - in this as in any other good thing - others will see your good works and glorify the Father .” — Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Stewardship…

Reflection In today’s second reading, St. Paul prays that the Thessalonians may be strengthened “in

every good deed and word.” May we, too, be strengthened and empowered to use our time

and talents for the good of others.

Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who take the time to perform random acts

of kindness with a joy-filled heart.

St. Vincent de Paul Society & Parish Social Ministry

(Outreach)

Today’s Gospel is about hope. Jesus has risen and is with us, therefore, at no time should we be without

hope. In giving to the poor, we are giving hope to those who have little.

This week the pantry is in need of jelly, cake mix, pork and beans, canned pasta, canned fruits, spaghetti,

and turkey gravy. All non-perishable food items are gratefully received. We especially thank those parish-

ioners who bring food items each week. They make it possible for us to assist others.

The preparation for the Thanksgiving baskets is beginning. The pantry will need all those food items

that make for a festive Thanksgiving dinner including turkeys. The baskets will be delivered on

November 19, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Please volunteer to deliver the baskets that morning.

Please let anyone who might be in need know that confidential assistance is available. The pantry is open

Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 9 am and 1 pm. Everyone is welcome to visit during those

times.

Today we support our family and friends who have served this na on with dis nc on. The Collec on for the Archdiocese for the Military Services will pro-vide the Gospel, the sacraments and other forms of spiritual support to the men and women of the United States armed forces wherever they serve, no ma er the circumstances. Please prayerfully consider a gen-erous contribu on to the first-ever na onal Collec on for the Archdiocese for the Military Services.

Saints Explosion By Youth Ministry &

Faith Formation Students Grades 1 to 6 and RCIC 1 & 2

Our Faith Formation Students guided by their Parents, Catechists and Aides researched facts, and revealed truths and interesting information about their individual Saints. Each class dramatically presented the story of their ‘Saint’ during their class time; in front of the other classes during their session. “You are never too old, or too young to be a saint.”

How Justice Scalia suffered the 'contempt of a sophisticated world'

Washington D.C., Nov 1, 2016 / 08:03 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Catholics in Washington, D.C. recently paid tribute to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia – both for his life of faith, and how he stood firm in his beliefs amid criticism from the cultural elite.

“Antonin Scalia was a man of faith and reason,” said Ed Whelan

in the keynote address Oct. 26. Whelan is the President of the

Ethics and Public Policy Center and a former clerk for Justice

Scalia. “May we all be inspired by his example to live Catholic

lives of integrity. May we see not with the eyes of men but with

the eyes of faith. May we be wise in Christ,” Whelan said. “And

may we, too, have the courage to suffer the contempt of the so-

phisticated world.” Scalia was honored with the John Paul II

New Evangelization Award at a dinner given by the Catholic

Information Center in Washington, D.C. The center is a nonprof-

it affiliate of the Archdiocese of Washington, and serves as a

bookstore as well as a host for cultural and intellectual events for

Catholics in the D.C. area.

Justice Scalia died Feb. 13 at a resort ranch in West Texas at the

age of 79. He was the longest-serving justice on the Supreme

Court, having served since 1986. A lifelong Catholic, Scalia at-

tended the Jesuit-run Xavier High School in New York City and

then Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. for undergrad-

uate studies. Also speaking at the recent tribute event were the

Archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, who gave

the invocation, and Princeton professor Robert P. George, who

served as the master of ceremonies. George commented that his

late friend was not afraid to stand up to cultural and legal forces

that threatened to push religion out of the public sphere. Legal

decisions that condemn religious expression in public places,

George said, have “become such a normal and accepted position

in our society that we forget what Justice Scalia's great predeces-

sors, the jurists and statesmen, had to say about the good place of

faith in our public life.” He lauded Scalia’s recognition that “our

welfare, our very survival as a nation, depended upon us being a

nation under God, that recognizes God's sovereignty and realizes

that we are under God's judgment.” Whelan also praised Scalia’s

robust defense of the role of religion in public life in his time on

the court. Quoting from one of the justice’s minority opinions,

Whelan stated that religion is not “some purely personal avoca-

tion that can be indulged entirely in secret, like pornography, in

the privacy of one’s room. For most believers it is not that, and

has never been.” Whelan also praised the justice’s opposition to

the decisions that denied the right to protect the unborn in Roe v.

Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, as well as more recent

rulings that challenged the understanding of marriage as an insti-

tution between a man and a woman.

But Justice Scalia, Whelan added, “would dismiss the idea that

he deserves any special thanks for his positions on these issues.

As a matter of constitutional law, these questions were easy, he

would say, and he was just doing his duty of interpreting the

Constitution impartially.” Whelan also recounted Scalia's bris-

tling at being called a “Catholic Judge,” quoting Scalia’s asser-

tion that “There are good judges and bad judges. The only article

of faith that plays any part in my judging is the commandment,

'Thou Shalt Not Lie.'” However, Scalia's life did bear out his

Catholic witness, Whelan offered, sharing a story of the late jus-

tice nudging a young Whelan to attend Mass on a Holy Day and

a speech Scalia often used at Catholic gatherings contrasting

“The Two Thomases” – Thomas Jefferson and St. Thomas More.

Thomas Jefferson, Scalia would point out, created a highly edit-

ed version of the Bible, cutting out miracles and the resurrection

itself as being irrational. “What is irrational, it seems to me,”

Scalia would say, “is to reject a priori, with no investigation, the

possibility of miracles in general, and of Jesus Christ’s resurrec-

tion in particular – which is, of course, precisely what the world-

ly wise do.”

On the other hand, St. Thomas More died for a reason that was

“silly” – at least in the eyes of his peers. “In what he did, More

was unsupported by intelligent society, by his friends, even by

his own wife,” Scalia said. “But of course More was not seeing

with the eyes of men, but with the eyes of faith.”

Whelan quoted Scalia, saying: “For the courage to suffer the

contempt of the sophisticated world for these seeming failings of

ours, we lawyers and intellectuals – who do not like to be regard-

ed as unsophisticated – can have no greater model than St.

Thomas More.”

A woman or couple facing an unexpected preg-nancy may feel anxious and overwhelmed, with a multitude of worries. It may be a single woman who had very different plans for her future, a teen-ager wondering how she will tell her family, or a couple already struggling to make ends meet. All too often, those in this situation feel pressure from friends, family members and others to termi-nate their pregnancy.
