CHOICE

"If you choose you can keep the commandments," Sirach tells us. God "has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand" (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today's reading from Matthew's Gospel, Jesus reminds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and d e c ep t i o n t h a t d r i v e ou r b ehav i o r . Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well.

A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR

Several parishioners asked me last weekend where they could get information about our Catholic teaching on immigration and refugee resettlement. The best resource is to go to the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: www.usccb.org. Look up Church Teach-

ings on the Rights of Migrants and Refugees. Also go to our diocese of Cleveland Catholic Charities web-site: www.ccdocle.org/social action. Both these web-sites give excellent summaries of Scripture and church teachings on the various ways we can promote the consistent ethic of life, standing up for life in positive ways – from conception to natural death. If you wish to get more involved locally, please go to the website for the International Institute in North Akron: www.iiakron.org. Check out the page marked How You Can Help. As you already know, I am not celebrating the Eucharist with you this weekend. I am on vacation combined with some retreat time in Phoenix Arizona. (I am sure that you are now feeling sorry for me :-) I will return on Friday evening, February 17. On Saturday evening, February 18, I will not preside at the 5 pm Mass because I will be celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary Mass at Holy Family Parish with a couple I have been close to for 38 years. I thank all of you for being my parish family at this time in my life.

Just visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections and click “How to Give” on the left. Your gift will certainly make a difference!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By the early 1950s some scholars were calling for the restoration of Communion of the faithful on Good Friday, since by then only a priest received, consuming the host from the Holy Thursday repository. In 1955 the new Good Friday liturgy was timed to begin at three o'clock everywhere, and included the option of Holy Communion, but without the Precious Blood that had originally been part of the liturgy. Today, there is increasing debate among theologians. Some feel that it would be better to fast from the Eucharist on Good Friday, focusing on the mystery of the cross and highlighting the Easter Communion. Others say that this Communion infuses the sadness of the day with awareness of Christ's victory. It is not a day of mourning, of course, and the Passion according to John grounds the liturgy in a sense of Christ's victory over death and the triumph of the cross. The tradition is rich and varied, and we are still in the early stages of recovering an ancient way of doing things. Why do we call the day "good"? The English and Dutch languages share this name, and its origin stems from the name "God's Friday." The traditional name for the day in Latin is Feria VI in Parasceve, which translates as "The Sixth Day of the Week of Preparation." Other languages make do with "Holy Friday." In another part of England, as in Denmark, the people used to call it "Long Friday," a good description for a quiet day without work and no chance for play or a good meal! --Rev. FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Today’s Gospel is from the “Sermon on the Mount.” Jesus gives strong and lofty ideals to inspire and guide our living. Today we celebrate World Marriage Day and are reminded that ideal marriages

are not lived on lofty mountaintops, but in the nitty-gritty of everyday life. In their love, mutual sharing and forgiveness, couples give us a glimpse of the Kingdom of Heaven.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

St. Vincent Parish is beginning a Prayer Shawl Ministry. If you enjoy knitting or crocheting, please consider joining this wonderful ministry. People involved in this ministry knit/crochet shawls which are then given to console those who are grieving, comfort those who are ill, and bring hope to those going through difficult times in their lives. Knit in prayer, the shawls are then blessed by Fr. Norm. Two meetings are scheduled for those interested in learning more about this new ministry: Tuesday, February 28, 9:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. in the Scullen Room. If you would like to attend, please call Ellen Green at 330-867-1364.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES ANNUAL APPEAL

The 2017 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal is underway with an in-pew commitment process taking place this weekend. This is not a special collection; rather, the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal represents the chance for all Catholics to make a significant pledge, payable in installments, to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland in order to support its mission of a society that stands united in its support of the “least among us.” Many parishioners have received a letter from Bishop Thomas requesting their support. If you have not received this letter, please respond to the in-pew commitment process today! If you have received the mailing, please respond to it. There is a box on the in-pew envelope to indicate that you have responded by mail. You did it for Me. Your support of the 2017 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal helps us to carry out the mission that Jesus entrusted to us: I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Please consider a generous gift that will change the lives of the 400,000 who are served each year in Northeast Ohio. Please pray for the success of the appeal, which provides for essential programs and services in need throughout all eight counties of the Diocese of Cleveland.

On behalf of the poor and needy of Northeast Ohio, thank you! We invite you to view the stories of inspirat ion and more information at www.catholiccommunity.org/2017Appeal.
