This month of May brings a few important features to us at St. Virgil. For one thing, it is our Carnival (from May 9th until May 12th). We also celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord twice because of our

Carnival: first on Thursday, May 10th and again on the weekend of the 12th and 13th of May.

Mother’s Day is May 13th which adds to our joy and delight in our Mothers. The following weekend, May 19th and 20th is Pentecost, the Feast of the Outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and the first gathering of the church in Jerusalem (Red is our color that day). Finally, we will also remember Memorial Day on Monday, May 28th. We have a rather busy calendar.

Right through this special month of May our Catholic Tradition calls us to walk with Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Our Rosary Society began this month with a special Mass with the Crowning of Mary on May 1. This beginning flavors the whole month of May and allows us to make Mary our model and teacher.

Just for reference: we can divide the Life of Jesus into four phases: His “hidden” life - about 30 years; next, His “public” life - about three years; thirdly, His “Passion and Death” - a Holy Week; and finally, His “Resurrection” time - 40 days.

Fr. Lance’s Letter

Mary, the Mother of Jesus laid the foundation for Jesus especially during those first 30 years of “hidden” life. Let us not forget what happens behind the scenes, those years of love and patience; of anxiety and worries; those times of joy and divine pleasure; those moments of deep insight and faithful teaching. Let Mary be our teacher, guide, instructor and model.

For us Catholics, praying the Rosary is important. Meditating on the Joyful, Glorious, Sorrowful, and Luminous mysteries walks us into the life of Our Lord Jesus Christ holding on the Mary’s hands. With your Rosary working through your fingers, allow Mary to touch you lovingly and share through her experiences the Life of Jesus. Many a Catholic has not only become a disciple of Jesus but also a Saint. Let Mary, the Mother of God be your Guide this Month of May. Through the love and protection of Mary, may God lead us into faithful living - Fr. Lance

May Crowning

Our Rosary Society planned, organized, and executed the celebration of crowning Mary into a wonderful Mass. Theresa Szucs was selected to crown the Blessed Mother, a privilege she performed with great dignity and reverence. Out cantor was Theresa Folan whose mellifluous voice added much to the beauty of this evening. All were then invited to the Tracy Center for fellowship and

refreshment. We thank the Rosary Society for conducting the May Crowning and bringing our Parish together.

FEAST OF THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD We will offer at St. Vigil Church two Masses on Ascension Thursday, May 10th at 6:30 AM and 12:10 pm. We have to do this because of the Carnival, as the church will not be quiet enough and accessible either on Wednesday evening or even Thursday evening.

We will also celebrate the Feast of the Ascension on the weekend, at Saturday, May 12th evening Mass at 5:00 PM on during all the four Sunday Masses on May 13.

May 13 also happens to be Mother’s Day and it will a great occasion to pray for our Mothers and ask to Lord to bless them for their gift of life, love and joy to us.

A Note From The Divine Mercy Ministry

Our Divine Mercy Chaplet group (who meet every Thursday evening in the Church at 6:30PM) would like to extend our ministry. We would like to visit any ill or bedridden parishioner (providing their families would welcome us) to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet at the bedside of your loved one.

These prayers will be heard by Jesus just as He promised St. Sr. Faustina when He appeared to her. That is, anyone who prays over a bedridden loved one Jesus said that this person will be “saved”. It would be our privilege for us to provide such a beautiful promise that God has given us.

You may call Frank Miller at 201-400-3998 or Grace Walsh at 973-540-1289 to make arrangement.

Faith Formation

CD Library

We have just added some new titles to the CD library located near the confessional by the Blessed Mother. Stop and have a look and grab a title that interests you.

Our Bible Study Group meeting is on Thursday at 7 PM in the School Library. We are reading the Letter to the Ephesians. Paul reveals may remarkable gifts that we as Christians receive thru the Church. He shows how the Church is the body of Christ; it’s also a household, a mystery, a bride and an army. It tells how, when we are adopted fully into the family of God, we receive a great inheritance and how God’s great life can transform our daily lives. Come, LEARN MORE ABOUT CHIRST! DRAW CLOSER TO HIM! LIVE WITH HIM FOREVER!

RETURN - Our Children Back to the Church Would you like your child to come back to Jesus, in the Church He founded? We have a small group at our church, St. Virgil's, dealing with this question. Perhaps you read about it in the Jan 18 Beacon? Everyone is welcome to visit our group, examining ways that could possibly help parents bring their loved ones back to the faith. We pray together, share our stories, and support each one’s efforts. We use a book entitled Return, How to Draw Your Children Back to the Church, which recommends steps a parent could take to encourage dialogue and create an environment in which parent and child are comfortable discussing matters of faith. Please, stop in to see if this approach makes sense in your life and offers you hope. Please call the St Virgil Church office, 973-538-1418, and join us on Thursday mornings at 11AM in the School Library.

Coins for Babies

With the success of the last four years’ campaigns (2017 exceeded $2,800) and the continued needs of expectant and new mothers, we will collect Coins for Babies again this year. Money collected is used to purchase much-needed items for Birthright in Dover: diapers, diaper bags, baby wash, baby wipes, petroleum jelly, crib sheets, towels and face cloths. Items are supplied year-round on an as-needed basis.

Starting on Mother's Day weekend, May 12/13, baby bottles will be available at the church entrances. Please fill with your donation and return to St. Virgil's on Father's Day weekend, June 16/17, or to the parish office. Birthright relies solely on contributions from neighboring parishes and individuals. It has no corporate sponsorships or fund-raising campaigns. This is a great opportunity to teach young children the power of giving, even small coins.

Please keep these mothers and their babies in your prayers

Weekly Reflections

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER John 15:9-17 This Sunday’s Gospel of John speaks of love over and over. Here are a few of its beloved verses:

“As my Father loves me, so I also love you.” “Love one another as I love you” “If you keep my commandments you will remain in my love.” “No one has greater love than to lay down his life for his friends.” “You are my friends if you do what I command you.” “This I command you, love one another.”

We can’t read these words often enough. In themselves, they are just amazing. It is fairly simple to know that we love God, but it is utterly amazing that HE LOVES US!! How can such a thing be? But Christ, and the great saints of history, tell us: Although God loves us, it is not totally unconditional love, for we are told that we must obey His commandments. We must act; ours is not a passive faith. It is a faith that calls us to action. It calls us to love. Each of us must live this gift of love in our own way. We are all different, with different gifts. Each of us is a piece of the puzzle that completes the world. We are each unique and have been created by God to fulfill a task not given to any other. We are given all we need to fulfill this, and even though we may feel we are lacking in something, we are not. God has given all we need to complete the job we were assigned to do. The world is not made whole without us. It is not fulfilled without our completing our life’s task, even if we ourselves are not sure what event in our lives fulfills that task.

So off we go to live the life God has put before us. If we can recite those quotes about love over and over, we shall have all the knowledge we need.

Lord, help us believe in Your love for us, and to live that reality.

EVANGELIZATION CORNER

There are many who see Faith as a set of rules to keep rather than a love that can transform those who are willing to accept

it freely. They may view God’s commandment “If you love me, you will keep my commandments … Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me” as a moral maxim. That is, do good, avoid evil, and thus prove that you love God. If one has this view, then a loving God becomes a result of our own human achievement.

However, keeping His commandment is not a human achievement driven by this moral maxim. If we keep the commandment out of fear, then obedience to the commandment will tend not to last very long and bring with it many resentments. Attempting to keep the commandment through our own power brings not only exhaustion and frustration but, also the prideful delusion that somehow, we have placed God in our debt because we have kept His commandment.

But, ‘Loving God’ is much more. It is a gift from God Himself and not the result of any human endeavor. ‘Loving God’ is a gift which, when received and experienced, motivates us to keep His commandment. Thus, keeping the commandment is the fruit of the love, not the cause of it. We would be far happier to keep the commandment by the grace of God’s love that is at work within us.

Love has the power to overrule our selfishness. It is extravagant and wants us to do more than the minimum to get by. It is in ‘loving God’ that we are motivated to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ into every human situation. It is in ‘loving God’ that each Catholic is invited to renew their relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church. It is in ‘loving God’ that we need to take our discipleship seriously. We need to grow in our ability to speak to others about Jesus and how we have come to know and be loved by Him.

May His grace be with each of us as we continue on our journey with Jesus.
