Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 4, 2018

FOCUS: Let us strive to proclaim the Gospel by our everyday words and actions.

In the Gospel, we hear that the Good News of Jesus is spreading to many towns and villages. Jesus tells his disciples that he has come for the purpose of preaching and teaching. That is our purpose as well. Let us strive to spread the Gos-pel in our everyday lives.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Our first reading relates the suffering and despair of Job. In the second reading, Saint Paul tells us we must not keep the Good News to ourselves, but we are called to share it with those we meet. In the Gos-pel, we hear that Jesus comes to bring healing and peace to all those he encounters. REFLECTION: Jesus is no longer trapped by the limits of time and place. He comes over to us now at this Eucharistic celebration. He extends a hand, as he did for Simon’s mother-in-law, to raise us up from what would press us down and to help us go further on our journey with him. So we ask ourselves:

• At this stage of our journey with Christ, how do we experience his hand reaching out to sustain us?

• Who is the outstretched hand of Christ for us?

Low-Gluten Communion Hosts We are now offering the option of low-gluten communion hosts. To receive a low-gluten host, please contact a priest or deacon and let them know your desire by visiting the Sacristy at least 5 minutes before Mass. Thank you.

Catholic Charities Appeal It is that time of year when we are asked to remember the needs of the poor and disadvantaged among us. This is a very important campaign in that the money raised di-rectly assists the people of the Archdiocese as well as our own parishioners. This is the 60th anniversary of the Catholic Charities Ap-peal in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia—60 years of giv-ing hope to all. Pledge cards and brochures are available in Church this weekend. Please feel free to take them home and look them over as this appeal will run until De-cember. The goal for the 2018 Catholic Charities Appeal is $12.5 million. Our goal at Saint William Parish is $17,099. I thank you for responding to this appeal and for your generosity in helping others. Fr. Al, Pastor

Don’t Give Up Chocolate for Lent! What is the best Lent ever? Lent comes every year. It is meant to be a time when we invite God to help us become the best version of our-selves. But for many of us, Lent isn’t a transformative experience. It is just a time when we give up chocolate or something else we enjoy, then go back to it at Easter. This year, you can change that with BEST LENT EVER. You will receive daily emails with short inspirational vide-os, practical tips for your everyday life, and real-life sto-ries to encourage you in your journey. All you have to do is sign up at DynamicCatholic.com/Best Lent.

Food Drive for St. Helena Church We will be collecting non-perishable food for the cupboard at Saint Helena Church the weekend of February 17-18. Their supply is running low and they support people living in our community. Please bring canned goods, pasta, cereal, etc. to the back of church. Your generosity and kindness to others is greatly appreciated.
