The Boring History Bit

Bournemouth is a large coastal resort town on the south coast of England directly to the

east of the Jurassic Coast, a 96-mile (155 km) World Heritage Site. According to the 2011

census, the town has a population of 183,491 making it the largest settlement in Dorset,

with Poole to the west and Christchurch in the east.

Before it was founded in 1810 by Lewis Tregonwell, the area was a deserted heath-land

occasionally visited by fishermen and smugglers. Initially marketed as a health resort, the

town received a boost when it appeared in Dr Granville's book, The Spas of England.

Bournemouth's growth really accelerated with the arrival of the railway and it became a

recognised town in 1870.

The town centre has notable Victorian architecture and the 202-foot (62 m) spire of St

Peter's Church, one of three Grade I listed churches in the borough, is a local landmark.

Bournemouth's location has made it a popular destination for tourists, attracting over five

million visitors annually with its beaches and popular nightlife.

Sunday is Full and Half Marathon Day

Both the full and half marathon start in Kings Park (pretty much the same location as the

Saturday parkrun). Hopefully Graham can get the coach as near to the start as possible

on Sunday. There will be two shuttles: one for the 08:00 half marathon and one for the

10:00 full marathon. (We will have more detailed information to deliver once we have

spoken to the coach driver on the Friday when we travel).

For those of you who would like to walk the journey is only 2 miles as per the information

detailed below:

Don’t be late!

The half marathon has a start time of 08:00 a.m. That’s pretty early. I should imagine

most of us will have just about completed the half marathon before the full marathon

starts.

The full marathon has a start time of 10:00 a.m.

Val Pell provided the following information for those competing in the full marathon (the

half will also take-in some of this course). Thanks Val.

Start to mile 4

The event start at Kings Park close to Premier League new boys AFC Bournemouth.

Staged on closed roads, you can enjoy a flat and fast section through leafy suburbs.

Mile 5

Runners skirt Hengisbury Head, a sandstone headland. Archaeological digs have

revealed it’s been inhabited since the Stone Age. These days it’s a nature reserve.

Mile 10

An-out-and back along the cliffs offers panoramic views, including the Isle of Wight to the

east. As you pass through Boscombe, you will see the Over strand area – once a

neglected beach chalet complex. This has recently undergone renovation and now has

rebranded beach pods designed by Wayne Hemingway.

Mile 12

Your first climb comes at Boscombe Chine gardens, which date back to the 1880’s. It’s a

200 metre ascent, with a nice little kick near the top!

Mile 14

After a down hill section you will pass the Russel_Cotes Museum. Built in 1901, the

couple donated the museum and a substantial collection of art to the town in 1907.

Mile 16

A unique feature of this race is that you run up and down the wooden decking of

Boscombe Pier and Bournemouth pier (a mile further along). The half marathon will also

take in both of these piers.

Mile 18

Behind Bournemouth International Centre you climb West Slope. Live music will keep

you going before this section levels out.

Page 11: STAC’s Jolly Trip To The Bournemouth Festival Of Running 2015 · STAC’s Jolly Trip To The Bournemouth Festival Of Running 2015 Pickup – Fri 2 nd October : John Smeaton Sports

Mile 23

As you head west again, you look out towards the exclusive peninsula of Sandbanks.

You also reach Poole harbour, said to be the largest natural harbour in Europe.

FINISH

After three miles along the prom, you finish by Bournemouth pier’s Lower gardens.

Post Race

We will all be in the pub!

Half marathon map

For both the races, the start and finish areas are in different locations. If you do not have

a supporter who will be carrying your bag for you, we suggest you make use of the

baggage drop off and collection points. We can confirm over the weekend but we are

pretty sure if you drop your bag off at the start it will be waiting for you at the finish

(hopefully). (HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE!!!)

It doesn’t look too far back to the hotel from the finish area.

Other Information

Things you might need to pack

1. Your own Bournemouth ‘race pack’ information. (That’s pretty important folks!).

2. Gels, safety pins, trainers, kit, garmins, chargers, phone chargers, MP3* players etc!!

3. Your parkrun barcode (if you intend to run).

4. 4 x electric plug socket extension lead (hotels are notorious for not having spare plug

sockets and we don’t want you all fighting over the one spare plug).

5. A pen (for the quiz, bingo etc).

6. The coach has a CD player so if anyone wants to bring a special CD we can see if the

driver will play it.

7. Travel pillow (if you struggle on coaches (Nicki Coop))

8. Cake, chocolate, sweeties!

9. A good sense of humour.

* The race organiser Martin Yelling has banned the use of MP3 players during all the

races. Please don’t wear them on race day as he has stated you will be disqualified (and

we really wouldn’t like to see that happen to anyone).

Come on Now and get ready to party!
