Parish Mission Statement George Green Parish Center 113 North Geneva Street Ithaca, NY 14850 *** 607/273-6121 Hours: Mon.—Fri. 8:00AM—4:00PM Ministry of Prayer for Ministers in the Vineyard Piety is that virtue that impels us to do justice to God, by doing what we ought, religiously. Attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist in a state of grace and with worthy reverence, supporting your par- ish and diocese as best you can, saying your prayers and doing works of mercy are all acts of piety. Most practicing Catholics acknowledge and attempt these, and thank God, but theres an act of piety that many parishioners may not think of, but that is essential to the vitality of the Church: prayer for priests and for all who are in ministry in the Name of Christ. When I first returned to the Church after my long period of waywardness, one of my confessors asked for prayers for himself and his fellow priests. Its a hard job,he said, and we cant do it without prayers from the pews.It is a hard job. Not only do our priests face opprobrium from the world, but they are expected to do more and more with less and less as our parishes struggle. They must meet the spiritual needs of their flock while also managing business concerns, without the support of a wife or group of friends near- by. And perhaps more significantly, though invisibly, they face constant attack by the unseen forces of evil. It used to be that cloistered religious, both monks and nuns, prayed for priests, and their con- stant prayer was the unseen and unsung fuel for the ark of salvation. Now, though a few pockets of such religious remain, they are spread too thin. We lay people must pick up the slack and pray for the sanctification of our priests, pray that they be graced with all the gifts of the spirit they need to do Gods work, for all our soulssake. Thats why Ive brought to our parish the Seven Sisters Apostolate. The women who make up our group each commit to offering a holy hour once a week, for the intention of our pastors sanctifica- tion. We have every day, but Tuesday covered. If you are a woman and can make it to the church be- fore 2:00 on Tuesdays and spend an hour in Christs presence, please prayerfully consider it. (We also need a few alternates, who can be men or women.) If you cant help, please at least pray for our parish priest, and for all our priests and bishops, that they, by Gods grace, live the holiness demand- ed by their vows, for the glory of God and salvation of souls.
