SAFEGUARDING:OA and its staff are committed to creating an environment for children and young people which safeguards and promotes the welfare of students and works together with other agencies to ensure that our academy has adequate arrangements to identify, assess and support those children who are suffering or likely to suffer harm.

To do this all staff, including supply staff should ensure that they have read and understood the academy safeguarding policy and procedures (appendix 2 to this part of the handbook and available on the academy website and in the staff room), and part one of Keeping Children Safe in Education September 2016.

Your academy Designated Safeguarding Lead is: Doreen Ellis – Deputy Headteacher

If you have a concern that you wish to raise outside the organisation, your local authority designated officer (LADO) details are provided in the contact list of the safeguarding policy.

Health and safetyAll queries about health and safety should be directed to Gavin Kros, our Facilities Manager – he can be emailed on [email protected] or called via the academy office.

If you require a first aider the office receptionist will contact one for you. All accidents must be recorded in the academy accident book. See Gavin Kros or Susie Tyler for access to this.Evacuation procedure can be seen in Appendix 4.

All staff are required to read and sign to say that they have understood and agree with the IT and acceptable use agreement which is within the online safety policy. This will be issued each year and must be completed each year.Laptops will be issued by Susie Tyler to teachers and others whose job requires it. Laptops must be cared for appropriately and locked away securely when not in use.

Appendix 3 of this part of the handbook is the online safety policy for the academy including an acceptable use agreement which needs to be read and signed to show your agreement and understanding of the academy’s requirements around promoting safe and responsible use of digital technologies.

Line management & staff structuresPlease see Appendix 8 for a detailed line management structure. This structure will also be used for performance management purposes.

Where to find academy informationThe shared T drive is used for staff to share and store resources. There is a photocopier and printer in the staff work room and in the main office. Staff are asked to use the work room copier whenever possible. Documents should be shared electronically where possible and academy printing must be kept to a minimum. In the classroom teachers are asked to keep the use of work sheets to a minimum and instead use interactive resources.During induction staff will be issued with an identity card which will allow them access to the building and to the photocopier. Victoria Goode in the main office will proved training for the use of the photocopier when needed. Each morning a briefing sheet will be prepared with the cover list and duties for the day. This will be posted on the office noticeboard, the staffroom board and emailed to all staff.

1. Management Information System At Olive AP- Thurrock we use the Arbor MIS. This is a very intuitive system to use and is easily navigated for staff. Staff will be enrolled on Arbor and will receive a welcome email. This will enable them to create a log in. Staff are encouraged to explore Arbor by using the online guides https://support.arbor-education.com/hc/en-us/categories/115000016825-How-Do-I-Use-Arbor- and the expertise of other staff members.A register must be taken on Arbor within the first 10 minutes of a lesson starting, every lesson. Teachers must ensure that these registers are accurate as they are a legal document. Taking attendanceSelect Quick Actions > Take attendanceThis will bring you to the teacher calendar/timetable.From here, click the lesson you would like to take the register for as seen below. This will bring you to the class screen. Select 'Take register'. Arbor is also used for recording achievements, incidents, communications, creating reports & student profiles and collecting assessment data. Staff will be given regular reminders and training on how to do this.

2. Learning, Teaching and Assessment Curriculum visionOlive AP Academy Thurrock demonstrates its commitment to, and belief in, the ethos and vision for the Academy through the ambitious design of the curriculum for our students. Our twofold approach is firstly to develop students’ social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) skills and resilience so that, secondly, they are prepared to successfully take their part back in their home school or in the 21st Century globalized world of work.

It is essential that our curriculum principles and planning respond effectively to the different needs of our cohorts. Underpinning the entirety of the curriculum is our determined focus to offer a relevant broad, balanced and expeditionary learning programme based on the National Curriculum at each Key Stage including English, science and mathematics. However, just as importantly, a specific focus will be given to skills, experiences and learning opportunities that will strengthen students’ SEMH and provide a more complete and beneficial education experience.

It is our intention to utilise Expeditionary Learning (EL) approaches at the heart of our curriculum. EL emerged from the Outward-Bound movement in the US and a partnership in the early 1990s with the Harvard School of Education. Our use of EL is based on proven outstanding practice and pedagogy developed in successful schools such as High Tech High Schools and Capital City Public Charter Schools in the US. The approach has improved standards significantly in these schools that are sited in areas of high deprivation and with students exhibiting high levels of SEMH need. The premise of EL is that students will be judged in the adult world of work by the quality of their work and the quality of their character, as well

as by their results in national tests or GCSEs. Student excellence is at the core of EL and focused on 3 main areas:

Mastery of knowledge and skills Character High quality student work

and is based on a foundation of:

Real-world curriculum experiences; Outstanding teaching; Rigorous and high quality critique and feedback; Leadership at all levels within the organisation, including student leadership; A culture of respect

In addition to the EL pedagogy, we will also adopt an Outdoor Learning and Forest School approach and ethos for our students’ learning.

See Appendix 6 for the current curriculum offerHow we teachSee Appendix 7- securing Good and Outstanding teachingLearning environment We are fortunate at Olive AP- Thurrock to have a new purpose built academy site. Everyone is expected to work to together to create a tidy, appealing and stimulating learning environment. The following simple rules are applied at all times:

Don’t walk past litter, pick it up. Report any damage to the office staff immediately. Ensure that classrooms have learning displays up which are kept neat and tidy. No blue tack on walls. No trailing wires. Clear your desk at the end of each day and leave it looking tidy. Make sure that your classroom is kept tidy at all times. Paper, books, resources etc. in classrooms and offices must be stored neatly in cupboards or

shelves. There is a hot water boiler for hot drinks in the staff room. Individuals must not have kettles in offices or classrooms. When taking a hot drink out of the staff room it must be in a mug with a lid.

Student AttendanceShould a student not arrive at the academy by 9:45 am (morning session) and 1:45 (afternoon session) and no explanatory telephone call has been received, a member of staff will make contact with the child’s parent or carer via a telephone call.

We always notify parents/carers if students abscond from the academy premises and if necessary, notify the police. The police are notified if the student is off site and out of visual contact, or their whereabouts is unknown, for 10 minutes. If a student becomes unwell whilst at the academy, parents/carers are informed. Depending on the age of the student and the severity of the illness a decision will be made as to whether the student should be collected by a parent or carer or sent home on their own.
