Back to Basics
Why is PBIS important?
Change the climate of the school• Change the approach to
discipline• Change behavior of
students
How do you get Staff to WANT to be Involved??
• They need to know the benefits• They need to feel included in
the process• They need support• They need to feel appreciated
for their efforts
What are the Benefits
What will the school get out of implementing PBIS consistently and with fidelity??
Do staff really understand PBIS?
Show the Benefits
• Short overview presentation • Show school data • Cost/benefit worksheet • Show national or regional
data • Show them our Fast Facts!!!• CCE can help• What else?
CooperationWhat are some common goals staff would like to meet?
• attendance• academic performance• behavior• environment• less disruptions, referrals, etc.• what else?
Get Their Insight
• Ask them regularly how the implementation process is going
• Ask for input on all aspects of PBIS
Staff Surveys
Some suggestions for surveying staff:
• Beginning of year: input on lesson plans, celebrations, teacher incentives
• Just before mid-year break, do ‘mini-SAS’• Periodically (at staff meetings?), short
surveys asking about 1 or 2 topics• Once a year – late spring – do the SAS
Creating a Survey
What do you want to know?
• How committed is the school?
• Are Systems and Practices in place and consistent?
Are Supports in Place?• Procedures for responding to
problem behavior• Staff-managed vs. admin-
managed
• Time for teaching behavior lesson plans
• Staff have access to feedback and assistance
• System in place to request assistance for individual students
Reward System
• Does everyone consistently give out acknowledgements?
• Does everyone know how?
• Are tickets used to concentrate on particular behaviors, based on data trends? Do staff members do this?
PBIS Team Survey
•Do TIC quarterly•Do short survey that will compare your views to other staff views
Keep Staff Informed
