LOOKING AHEAD TO FALL 2001OFFENSEStrengths: Offensive Line, RunningBacksQuestion Marks: Receivers,Quarterbacks• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Change is in the air for Utah’soffense in 2001. Although there will benew players at several key positions, perhaps the biggest shift will be philo-sophical. Seasoned college and NFLassistant coach Craig Ver Steeg is Utah’snew offensive coordinator and quarter-backs coach, and his coaching resumespeaks of a wide open offense. Mostrecently the quarterbacks coach atIllinois (1997-00), Ver Steeg cut hiscoaching teeth on the staff of Utah’spass-happy offensive juggernaut of thelate ‘80s.

Other coaching changes could alsoimpact Utah’s offensive style. For thefirst time in two decades, Utah’s receiv-ers and running backs will have newcoaches. Vincent White, who coached atArizona State a year ago, is Utah’s newreceivers and running backs coach.Another move finds Alex Gerke, a formerUte player and graduate assistant, backin the fold as the tackles/tight endscoach. Two first-year graduate assistantswere also hired by the offense. KevinClune will assist with the running backsand former Ute defensive back Jay Hillwill help coach the receivers and tightends.

The revamped staff will implement anew offense based on flexibility, balance, efficiency and discipline, all Ver Steegtrademarks in his previous stops atCincinnati, Harvard, the Chicago Bearsand Illinois.

Just who will actually run the newoffense is unknown going into springball, but whomever the quarterback is,he’ll have plenty of time to makedecisions thanks to a tremendousoffensive line. He’ll need to break in astable of new receivers in another yet-to-be-resolved position. And, while the mantaking the snaps will hand off to one ofthe league’s best running backs, the newoffense demands more than a singlepower back.

Here’s a peek at what’s ahead for theUte offense:

Offensive LineWithout question the best known

facet of Utah’s offense, the line is deep, strong and experienced. Returning first-team all-conference tackle Doug Kaufusi(6-6, 308, Sr.) is the most nationallyrecognizable name, but he’s surroundedby honor candidates. For instance, juniorJordan Gross (6-6, 303) is developinginto a player of Kaufusi-like stature.Honorable mention all-Mountain WestConference as a sophomore in 2000,Gross started every game, eight at tackle.Another tackle with starting experienceis senior Kevin Wilson (6-7, 307), whodid a nice job when injuries forced Grossto move inside to right guard. With thosethree players, the tackle position is notonly talented, but relatively deep.

The situation at guard could be asgood or better as at tackle ... or it couldbe the question mark of the line. Ex-pected to receive a medical hardship yearfrom the NCAA is Sam White (6-3, 298,Sr.). The 2000 preseason all-conferencepick missed virtually the entire seasonwith a knee injury and a healthy Whitewill be a critical link in Utah’s line nextfall. Tough and aggressive, he can playeither guard position, but the best casescenario would have him playing on theright side, a bookend to big Ed Ta’amu(6-3, 320). Ta’amu, who needs to gradu-ate this summer to receive his fourth yearof eligibility per NCAA rules on initialnon-qualifiers, takes this position fromgood to great. He started every game atleft guard last year and, if he returns, willturn heads in college and beyond withhis size, strength and technique.

The backups at guard appear to havesome talent too. Tevita Vakalahi (6-1,285, Jr.) made a successful transitionfrom defensive to offensive line last yearand is positioned behind White at rightguard. Freshman Sione Pouha (6-4, 260)could be the understudy to Ta’amu atleft guard.

Center looks solid with three“starters” returning. Steve McKane (6-0,295, Sr.), who like White is awaitingNCAA medical hardship clearance, started the first two games before aseason-ending knee injury. In steppedtalented redshirt freshman DustinMcQuivey (6-3, 279) as the starter fornext six games until injuring his knee.

Michael Richardson (6-2, 266, Sr.),arguably the most versatile lineman inthe conference, stepped in for the finalthree games. Richardson was honorablemention all-league as a junior despiteplaying all over the place. Armed withtwo numbers (56 and 90), he started onetime or another at center, guard and tightend.

Tight EndsThree part-time starters are back from

a year ago, Richardson, Scott Price (6-4,252, Sr.) and Matt Hansen (6-6, 230, So.).Richardson will start in the spring andthe other two, along with senior TonyDickamore (6-4, 258), will fight for thebackup job. Utah didn’t sign any tightends in the latest recruiting class but thereturnees might look as green asnewcomers at the start of spring. That’sbecause Ver Steeg promises to throw tothe tight ends, rather than limiting themto blocking, their primary role for thepast 10 years.

QuarterbacksAlthough this position is wide open

going into spring ball, don’t confuseuncertainty and youth with lack of talent.Only sophomore Lance Rice (6-1, 193)has any NCAA game experience, but he,along with Purdue transfer Ryan Breska(6-4, 212, So.) and highly touted redshirtfreshman Brett Elliott (6-3, 200) havequite a battle shaping up.

Sophomore Lance Rice is one of three talentedyoung candidates at quarterback.

92001 UTAH FOOTBALL SPRING PROSPECTUS • WWW.UTAHUTES.COM

LOOKING AHEAD TO FALL 2001Rice was 2-1 as the starter last year

and played in four games total. He beganthe year as the third string QB behindtwo senior co-starters. By season’s end,he had wrested away the starting spot, completing nearly 50 percent of his passattempts and throwing for four TDs.

While Rice was getting game time,Breska and Elliott were directing thescout teams. Breska, scheduled to beone of Drew Brees’ backups at Purdueafter redshirting in 1999, instead opted totransfer to Utah last fall. Bound byNCAA transfer rules, he could not playin any games, although he couldpractice. As for Elliott, with two seniorquarterbacks and Rice, a redshirtfreshman, ahead of him on the depthchart, redshirting made the most sense.

This much is certain: While the threeoffer different strengths, the quarterbacksituation looks better than it has foryears. Rice is athletic, poised, intelligentand makes good decisions. His biggestbonus may be his game experience.Breska is a strong-armed, big, drop backstyle quarterback with a very quickrelease. A dedicated student of thegame, Breska’s edge might be how wellhis style is suited to the new offense.Elliott, a former high school phenom, is ahybrid of the other two. Fairly athletic,he also possesses a good arm, attitudeand leadership ability. He could make hisclaim to the starting spot on the groundsthat he is the complete package.

Wide ReceiversThis was a critical recruiting area for

the Utes in the off-season, since onlysenior Cliff Russell and junior walk-onJosh Lyman have any measurable D-Iexperience. Fortunately, new receiverscoach Vincent White will be greeted witha recruiting class that boasts six qualitywideouts. Four of those are consideredblue chip catches: freshmen LynzellJackson and Jaun McNutt and jucotransfers Paris Jackson and DevinHouston.

However, White will have to waituntil fall to see how they and the rest ofthe signing crop stack up. (LynzellJackson may need a year to meet NCAAacademic requirements, which wouldpush his start back to 2002.)

White won’t get a live glimpse of his

only proven star until fall either: Russellis scheduled for jaw surgery and willmiss most of spring drills. At leastRussell’s skills are well documented. Hewas honorable mention all-league lastseason despite missing all of three andmost of four games with a broken arm.Believed to be the fastest player ever tocompete for Utah (he runs a 4.25 forty-yard dash), Russell led Utah with 37receptions and was second in receivingyards (517) and touchdowns (3) in ashortened season.

With Russell out of spring drills, watch for Josh Lyman to stand out. As asophomore last year, Lyman caught 17balls for 245 yards and 1 TD andaveraged 14.4 yards per catch, secondbest on the team. Another returnee whocould get a long look in Russell’sabsence is senior Dennis Smith, whohas tried his hand at receiver, slot backand tight end. Redshirt freshman JustinWalterschied and returned Mormonmissionary Morgan Scalley also hope tomake an impression. Scalley, a 1997honorable mention high school All-American, registered for second semes-ter classes and is eligible for spring ball.

Running BacksWhile a power run game remains the

objective under new offensive coordina-tor Ver Steeg, the way it is executed willcreate a dramatically different look. TheUtes will rely on a lead back, but they’llalso utilize a fullback, a change fromrecent years. The key to Ver Steeg’s planis using balance and execution to forcethe defense to defend multiple forma-tions with plays that are simple for theoffense to run. His running backs will mixit up with off-tackle, inside and perimeterruns, and they’ll also be pass catchingthreats. Ver Steeg believes in throwingthe ball to every eligible receiver and thebacks are no exception.

While this position was not tremen-dously productive on the stat sheet ayear ago, there is some talent. Hence thedecision not to bring in any new runningbacks in the recent signing class. SeniorAdam Tate (6-1, 230), second-team all-conference a year ago, is a big, powerfulback in the mold of former Utah andcurrent NFL stars Jamal Anderson andMike Anderson. Tate should be even

better this year with spring and fallpractices under his belt. He joined theteam late in August and missed theentire preseason camp last year whileawaiting academic clearance. Tate didn’tcrack the lineup full-time until the fourthgame of the season, yet in nine gamestotal, he rushed for 660 net yards (73.3yards per game) and a team-best seventouchdowns. The MWC’s third-leadingrusher in 2000 is practically a shoo-in forpreseason all-conference honors this fall.

Tate could get some in-housecompetition from a few sources, namelyArizona State transfer J.R. Peroulis (6-1,210). One of ASU’s fastest players and aformer nationally ranked high schoolsprinter, Peroulis transferred to Utah lastfall and played for the practice squadwhile fulfilling his NCAA transferrequirements.

Two seniors who played very well attimes last year will also be in the mix.Thomas Fortune (6-3, 228) and DameonHunter (5-11, 231) each offer a differentdimension to Utah’s run game. Fortunegoes into spring as the starting fullback.Hunter, a slasher, will join Tate andPeroulis at halfback.

Senior Adam Tate is one of the Mountain WestConference's best running backs.

LOOKING AHEAD TO FALL 2001DEFENSEStrengths: Defensive Line, LinebackersQuestion Marks: Corners, Safeties• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Change isn’t always a good thing. For instance, defensive coordinator KyleWhittingham is a firm believer in thestatus quo. That’s because his defensewas the best in the Mountain WestConference last year and ranks amongthe league leaders, year in and year out.

There was some movement on thedefensive coaching staff in the off-season, with Bill Busch accepting anoffer to coach the safeties. Whittingham, responsible for that position beforeBusch came on board in late December, will now oversee the linebackers.

Turnover did hit the defense in a bigway, but it mostly came on the playerpersonnel front, where graduation cutdeeply into last year’s two-deep. Goneare two first-team all-conference defend-ers: cornerback Andre Dyson andlinebacker Kautai Olevao. The Dyson-ledbackfield was particularly decimated.None of the three rotating starters atstrong and free safety returns and thetop three corners must also be replaced.

Not surprisingly, two thirds of Utah’sincoming recruiting class plays on thedefensive side of the ball. They will joina unit that, while lacking upperclassmenin places, has plenty of potential.

Here’s an idea of who will contributedefensively for Utah:

Defensive LineOpposing offensive lines are going

to hate playing Utah, whose defensiveline was the area least affected bygraduation. Best yet, most of thereturners are viable honor candidates.

Shoulder to shoulder on the rightside is one of the most imposing duos inthe conference, if not the nation. At rightend, Jason Kaufusi (6-3, 250, So.) wasthe 2000 Mountain West Conference co-Freshman of the Year. He would surelyhave made the all-conference first orsecond team had he not missed twogames with an ankle injury. Instead, hewas named honorable mention all-MWCafter averaging 7.0 tackles per game andblasting in for 16 tackles for loss, eightsacks and eight quarterback hurries. At

his side is three-technique tackle GarrettSmith (6-3, 276, Jr.), another quarterbacknightmare and also an honorablemention all-MWC pick. Smith, whosespeed and cutthroat attitude will makehim a contender for first-team all-conference honors this year, finished theseason with 10 sacks and 10 QB hurries.

Here’s where it gets interesting.Ma’ake Kemoeatu (6-5, 305, Sr.), whocame to Utah as a non-qualifier, whichinitially cost him a year of eligibility, haspetitioned the NCAA to regain that year.If he is successful in his appeal, he’ll beback, but maybe not at nose guard, where he was honorable mention all-MWC a year ago. Instead, the coacheswant a trimmer Kemoeatu (he shed 15pounds from last fall) to move outside tobase end, where his height and strengthwill make him an imposing road block.Replacing Kemoeatu at nose guard inthat scenario is senior Lauvale Sape (6-2,270), who impressed as the backup lastyear (36 tackles, 4 for a loss).

The front line stars have a few hotprospects behind them, as well. JuniorMarcus Jones (6-2, 245) would start atmost other schools and keeps open endproductive when he subs in for Kaufusi.Behind Smith at tackle are two freshmenthe coaches really like: Steve Fifita (6-0,275) and Chris Kemoeatu (6-4, 315). Theyounger Kemoeatu was the most highlysought recruit on the Islands this yearand Utah won out over schools likeNebraska, Washington and Colorado forhis talents. Backups at nose guardinclude Kasey Jackson (6-3, 300, Jr.), atransfer via Hawaii and Cal, and sopho-more Lewis Powell (6-3, 298), who camein as a non-qualifier and redshirted lastyear.

Defensive BacksA big beneficiary of Utah’s heralded

defensive line will be the backfield, where experience is in short supply andpressure on the quarterback will bewelcomed. Though teams will certainlytest the green in Utah’s backfield, theymight not for long.

That’s partly because Arnold Parkerlies in wait. Parker, Utah’s starting nickelback a year ago as a redshirt freshman, will crop up all over the place this fall. Atremendous talent, Parker served in theshadows of seniors last year while helearned the ropes. He’ll create theshadow this year and it will extend fromlinebacker to corner to safety. Barringany unforeseen accidents, Parker, whocan play every defensive position exceptthe line, will rarely leave the field. Hismain position will be safety and he’llstart on the strong side.

At free safety, sophomore AnthonyWhite will get a good look in the spring.Come fall, incoming sophomoreAntwoine Sanders, who earned areputation for his quickness and hardhits in a brief junior college career, willmake a pitch to play.

Less known even than the safetiesare Utah’s corners and nickel backs. Those positions could be a bit fluid, atleast at first, with as many as sevenplayers serving as puzzle pieces. Rightnow, it looks like the starters will besenior Yohance Scott and junior AirabinJustin at the corners and redshirtfreshman Bo Nagahi at nickel back.

Senior Lauvale Sape is prepared to step in and startat nose guard.

LOOKING AHEAD TO FALL 2001Watch for former running back D’ShaunCrockett, with his exceptional quicknessand explosiveness, to force the issueafter he learns the position. Incomingfreshman Antonio Young, consideredone of the top high school defensivebacks available this year, should stepinto contention immediately. Two othersin the mix early are redshirt junior CodyWeight and junior Desmond Davis.

on special teams last year, will playbehind Deckart at rover in the spring. Hisgoal is to establish himself beforeAugust, when two coveted recruitsreport: Juco transfer Dominic Payne (6-4,205, Jr.), considered a major catch, is talland rangy and can cover a lot of ground.Freshman Steven Thompson (5-10, 212)already has such good skills he couldforce his way into the lineup immediately, rather than taking a redshirt year.

Behind Dwinell in the middle isredshirt freshman Zach Tune (6-2, 250), agood runner who shows signs of realpotential. A future prospect behind Bahrand Moleni at the “stud” is redshirtfreshman Corey Dodds (6-1, 219).

SPECIAL TEAMSStrengths: Kickers/PuntersQuestion Marks: Returners• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

For the first time in a quarter of acentury, Utah’s special teams will havenew leadership. Gary Andersen, ready tostart his fifth year as coach of thedefensive tackles and strong sidedefensive ends, has added special teamsto his duties. While he shouldn’t have totinker too much with the kicking situa-tion, he must oversee a completeoverhaul of the return game.

With two senior kickers on board,Andersen will have some decisions tomake. Ryan Kaneshiro and GoldenWhetman have both handled Utah’sfield goal and PAT kicks at variousstages of their careers and they’re readyto wage another battle for the startingjob. Kaneshiro, the starter as a freshmanin 1998, found himself third on depthchart in ‘99. Last year, he won hisstarting spot back in the fourth game, replacing Whetman. Kaneshiro did a nicejob, making all 22 of his PATs and 6 of 8field goal attempts. Whetman, mean-while, continued to handle kickoffs andwas also Utah’s long field goal kicker. His 55-yarder against Wyoming was thesecond longest field goal in schoolhistory.

The strong-legged Whetman wasalso the starting punter last year and heuncorked some boomers, although heoften sacrificed distance (averaged 38.7

yards per punt) for accuracy (placed 19punts inside the 20). He might need bothfacets this year to beat out Oklahomatransfer Brian Lewis. Lewis wasOklahoma’s starting punter in 1995before leaving on an LDS church missionand returning to find his scholarshipgone. He finished 21st in the nation inpunting average as a freshman (41.92)and his long punt of 78 yards suggestshe has a leg to rival Whetman’s (longpunt of 67 yards).

Andersen promises there will behealthy competition for the returners, too, but who exactly who will be in themix is unsettled. Certainly, whomeverreturns kicks and punts for the Utes willhave some giant shoes to fill. SteveSmith, one of the greatest returners inschool history, and Patrick Dyson, theMWC’s second-leading kickoff returnerin 2000, have both moved on.

Replacing career punt record holderSmith could be one of two redshirtfreshmen: Bo Nagahi or JustinWalterscheid. Nagahi presents aninteresting option. As a senior in highschool, he averaged 35 yards per puntreturn. Some possibilities to returnkickoffs are D’Shaun Crockett (whoreturned two kicks for 52 yards last year),Arnold Parker , Desmond Davis andNagahi.

LinebackersAlthough four-year starter and three-

year all-leaguer Kautai Olevao is gone, experience is the buzzword at linebacker.Sheldon Deckart (6-2, 242, Jr.), Utah’ssecond leading tackler as a sophomorelast year with 73, will move from middlelinebacker to rover. Deckart, who hasgreat speed and lateral movement, isideally suited for rover, where he shouldmake a run for postseason honors.

Replacing Deckart in the middle willlikely be CR Dwinell (6-0, 232, Sr.).Dwinell’s aggressive style earned himplaying time as a walk-on last year.

At the “stud” watch for BrooksBahr (6-3, 225, Jr.), whose game has beenquieted in past years by injuries, to makesome noise this year. In a similar situa-tion is Bahr’s projected backup, StanMoleni (6-2, 255, Sr.), a Brigham Youngtransfer the coaches expected tocontribute last year before a preseasonAchilles tear.

The backup situation is good atevery linebacker position. Junior JeremyLyman (6-2, 231, Jr.), who did a nice job

Sophomore Arnold Parker will be on the field onevery defensive down, usually at strong safety.

Senior Golden Whetman is in a dog fight at twopositions: place kicker and punter.

HEAD COACH RON MCBRIDEThe college football map has changed in

recent years and thanks to Head Coach RonMcBride, Utah is now on it. The Utes, whostruggled through decades of second ratefootball prior to McBride’s hiring back in 1990,are now virtual fixtures in the annual confer-ence title race and regulars on the bowl gamecircuit.

McBride, the most successful coach inmodern times at Utah and its second-winningestcoach ever, is 75-53 in his 11 years, an average ofnearly seven wins per season. Utah postedwinning seasons from 1993-99 and finished at.500 or better in nine straight seasons (1991-99).To put some historical perspective on that feat, the last time the Utah football program went ninestraight years without a losing season was morethan a half a century ago. In fact, the Utesposted just 12 total winning seasons in the 30years preceding McBride’s hiring.

While he trails legendary former coach IkeArmstrong in all-time wins (Armstrong won 141games from 1925-49), McBride has no peer whenit comes to postseason play. Under his direction, the Utes have participated in five bowl games. Inthe 98 years leading up to his appointment, Utahplayed in three bowl games total.

McBride’s bowl credits include a 17-16 winover Fresno State in the 1999 Las Vegas Bowland a 16-13 win over Arizona in the 1994Freedom Bowl. He also took teams to the 1992Copper Bowl, 1993 Freedom Bowl and 1996Copper Bowl.

Those bowl games, along with someimpressive national rankings, have made Utah anational player in football. In 1994, McBride’sUtes set a school mark for most wins with a 10-2record, and their No. 8 final national ranking (No.10 AP) was also a U. best. The icing on the cakewas a win over Arizona in the 1994 FreedomBowl. Utah again broke into the rankings in 1996,spending four weeks in the Top 25 and climbingas high as No. 19. The 1999 Utes appearedregularly in the “others receiving votes”category during a 9-3 season that is tied for thesecond most wins in school history.

The Utes have also tasted conferencesuccess under McBride. In 1995, Utah tied forthe Western Athletic Conference championship,Utah’s first conference title since 1964. In 1999,the Utes won a share of the inaugural MountainWest Athletic Conference title. The biggest ofMcBride’s 51 conference wins have comeagainst arch rival Brigham Young, a program thathad defeated Utah in 16 of the 18 years prior toMac’s tenure. Those days are gone ... Utah haswon five of the last eight games with BYU,

“This class more than fills what weneed. It’s very athletic and we don’thave any projects or players withsuspect talent. All of these guys haveproven they can play the game theway it’s supposed to be played.

“We signed six receivers I’m reallyhappy with, but two in particular,Lynzell Jackson and Paris Jackson, are going to make a huge impact onour program. Defensive backs ShayneScruggs and Antonio Young are asgood as you’re going to get. Young isone of the top rated high schoolcorners in the country and Scruggs isprobably the top JC corner you couldtake. At linebacker, MarquessLedbetter is just flat out a big timeplayer. He and Dominic Payne areboth big guys with speed.

“Good defensive linemen are the hardestplayers to find and getting ChrisKemoeatu was just huge for us. We havebeen on to him since the very beginning

Some of the Biggest Catches in the 2001 Utah Signing Class

Chris Kemoeatu: DL is widely considered the best player out of Hawaiithis year. Big (6-4, 315) and strong.Lynzell Jackson: Coveted WR is projected to play immediately. At 6-3, 180,he has both size and speed.Bernard Fano: Highly sought DL committed to ASU in the fall but changedhis mind and will play for the Utes.Jaun McNutt: WR out of San Diego is a leaper who could play as afreshman.Antonio Young: Great speed and skills make him one of the country’s topincoming freshman corners.Shayne Scruggs: Won’t enroll until January 2002, but coaches see him as acornerback of the (former Ute) Andre Dyson mold.Paris Jackson: Big (6-3, 190), fast WR picked Utah over Kansas State.Marquess Ledbetter: LB is a great athlete out of Mississippi who also hasbaseball scouts after him.

and are ecstatic he chose to come here. And Bernard Fano was just too good aplayer to pass up."

Junior receiver Cliff Russell was Utah’s loneoffensive highlight, making 10 receptions for 141 yards to leadthe offense.
