This is what you said...This is what you said...

At the end of last year staff were asked

to answer the question ‘Why work at

Selby’s?’

You said....

“love the type of clients and the fantastic

responses from clients when they have

received all their signage on time and it

makes their events look great”

“the best thing about working at Selby’s is

the people”

“It’s also a thrill to see work you have

handled appear on the TV or in the papers”

“The hard work of the staff that just go

the extra yard to get the job done. The

attitude that supports this”

“Relaxed work environment”

“Selby’s is a very professional, modern

workplace with great people”

The Yam business is thriving and harvest is due next month, watch out for Daisy flying in via helicopter after a bumper season! Candy and Angela are hoping that we have completed the last of the padded foot protector, before they end up in a padded room!

Thanks to the social committee for Harmony Day and to all the staff who prepared food for the day, it was great feast and an enjoyable gathering.

Reception/Finance Many changes are taking place in the accounts area. We said goodbye to Evelyn on the 25

th of May. Evelyn has been part of the Selby’s team for almost 5 years and will be

missed. We wish her all the best in her new position. Linda is happy to be taking up the Accounts Receivable position and has finished her training. So far she is very cool, calm and collected, we hope she keeps smiling after flying solo as of the 28

th of May!

So we are on the search again for a new and wonderful receptionist to fill Linda’s shoes. We hope to have someone new in the chair as soon as possible. We thank-you in advance for your patience during the transition.

From the Factory Floor We have completed many projects in the last few months including The Melbourne Ironman, Rip curl Pro, NAB Triga roll out, big jobs for IGA, a huge roll out of barricades and teardrops for Aussie apples and countless City Of Sydney jobs all with great success and client satisfaction. More recently we have completed a huge coreflute program for Beef Australia and Mothers Day. Great work Alan, Angela, Peter and the eyelet men for getting all this done on time. We welcome Scott into the company and welcome Sandra back to packing. Ervin has been supplied a Victorian drivers license and has requested car park numbers 40,41,42 and 43. Apparently his dad is buying him a stretch Hummer!

Printing It has been a busy couple of months in the Printing department. Work has been steady in both screen and digital printing. We have been working hard to keep up with the workload in prepress as we have had a number of people away. We have made some changes in pre press to help us to improve our quality and we have been looking at new inks and fabrics and testing them out to see if we can getter better results.

Interstate News The Triga production facility in our Queensland office has been given a boost with the implementation of a more user-friendly work-station set up by Beau. This has helped improve production efficiencies, particularly of the Telstra pop-up store hardware, with one Telstra order alone requiring a total of 1200 rivets to be inserted by hand. I’m told that Beau is in training for a Guinness world record for the number rivets ‘popped’ in the shortest space of time.

Lauren has left Selby’s and a new sales person will be starting in Sydney soon. They will have six weeks under Celeste’s wing before going solo in Sydders office when she moves to WA in July. Celeste will be having a celebratory bachelorette / bon voyage drink in Melbourne in July on our interstaters biannual visit for anyone who couldn’t attend the Sydney events - cheers! (has anyone been invited to the Sydney event Cela’s???)

HR/OH&S Always busy in the HR department and never a dull moment!! We have introduced a leadership team that meets every Thursday afternoon. This group’s job is to work together to help Selby’s keep on improving how it works as a company and to look at any areas that can help it do this. One important area that the group has been looking at is Quality and the ways that we can improve our quality standards so that our clients get the best possible product and service that we can provide. What this means: A set of quality checklists have been developed that each person will fill in for each job. The checklists will be tried in a couple of areas first and then everyone will begin to use them. Don’t panic there will be plenty of time before the checklists are introduced and each manager will let their department know what they have to do when the time comes. So stay tuned…….

FIRE WARDENS Beware

Congrats to Ronnie Price (Office), Frances (Factory) and Amber (Printing) who are our new Fire Wardens.

We will be in safe hands in the event of an emergency as these guys will be completing the Fire Warden training at the end of June. Please note no

emergencies welcome until after this time….No doubt we will have some emergency practice drills….

And the winner is….And the winner is….

Congratulations Lily …. Lily wins 2

free movie tickets for her

suggestions on what to name this

newsletter…

Lily’s 3 ideas were:

The Matrix (A form of connection)

The Oracle Times

and her final idea was:

The Sel Times

“The last one means The Selby

are in the shape of an ‘S’ for

Selby’s”.

These are great suggestions but

it seems the most popular

choice was “Connections”

and as one of the aims of

the newsletter is to connect

departments and staff it seems

like the most suitable choice so

thanks to everyone for their

feedback….

Lily we hope you enjoy your

clock cards in the factory and in the shared Document Index.

effort to make a dish from the country they came from. The lunch room was full with a good variety of foods and sweets. Ruzanna’s cake was enjoyed by everyone, even Marc. Lien made a lovely chicken dish. Yum!! Kate’s polish salad was very tasty. Everyone’s food tasted great, so thank you once again. We look forward to the next Harmony Day in 2013 From Maria. (thanks Flori for the great photos) Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea… Selby’s certainly wins the Biggest Morning Tea prize… what a spread!!! One thing Selby’s does very well is provide a good feed. Thankyou to everyone for making this such a great success. Apart from the opportunity to get together we raised just under $100 for the Cancer Council of Australia. This takes our fundraising total to $198. 45 Jess.

Reception/Finance Welcome to Linda Randall who started in reception in November. Linda has a recent background of reception / accounts based work and prior to this spent 23 years working in the Banking industry. She has settled comfortably into her new role at Selby’s and is becoming familiar with our processes and procedures. We are very happy to have her join our team. A big thankyou to the Social Committee for organising the Christmas function- thanks to Daryl for making the initial enquires and a special thankyou to Tracie for all her hard work in making the night so enjoyable. Tracie was on it from the beginning, checking out venues, making lists, checking them twice, organising dates, menus, tables, seating, prices….the list goes on and went on throughout the night. I am sure you will agree the end result was a great night by all… as the photos show....

Production We welcome back everyone for the New Year, the last returning person was Patty who had a nice long break that took her up to Australia Day. A big thankyou to those that changed their return to work times especially Barb Ervin and Angela, also to Kit and Ricky who returned a day earlier. The first few days back were a bit of a blur, and a fair few things to catch up on. I would like to say well done to Cameron for looking after the production and despatch in the first week, I am sure he has a new found empathy for the role and a new found enthusiasm for his own role.

We had one disappointing experience on a job that was installed over the break and our 2012 commitment is to define and implement quality procedures across each area of the business. While there is no doubt we do a very good job and have a high success rate, the facts are that every job counts and every job requires the same procedures and scrutiny. Ronnie has brought us all great joy in the way of work for the St Kilda festival; this has many components over many substrates and will provide a real challenge for us going into February.

Staff Updates Our once homeless goods receiving staffer is settled and enjoying life in downtown Boronia at the foothills of the Dandenong’s…. Alan said he could not wait to come back to work after an extended break… looks like we have found your replacement for next year Cam….. Kate has been very bleary eyed and tired form watching too much tennis action! Kit and Sidney head overseas for 4 weeks and we wish them safe and enjoyable travel… Thankyou from all the factory staff to the social committee for a great night bowling, while I looked the part my captaining of our team was disgraceful to say the least. I should have called a return to the bar much earlier than planned. Big congratulations to Renuka for her magic act on the night. Also thanks to Marc and Glenda for providing the evening, it was a great night and I hope more of you decide to come next year…. I am looking forward to reshaping our team and training hard to claim the title next year.

Interstate - NSW The year has begun well in the Sydney office with a new account from Arnoldfurnace from an Inbound referral for French Film Festival (This is a job we have done for years out of Melbourne direct to the festival). Sydney office has scooped this one as the order has come via the agency managing Peugeot who are the main sponsor. At least it has remained in the family!!

Going the Extra Mile!! Tamworth Regional Council recently had major issues with Elite Energy allowing them to hang banners on their poles for the Country Music Festival. The drama even made the local paper! In the end Elite would not let them use 30% of the poles they planned to use, however thanks to our help and guidance along the way they got most of their banners up. We supplied examples of specification sheets, info on what other councils do, advice from Marc on the wind loading on poles – THATS WHAT WE CALL GOING THE EXTRA MILE!!

Interstate - QLD For the first week or two after the Christmas break, it looked almost if we were in for a repeat of the 2011 Brisbane floods, but apart from Burnside Road (the road we’re on) going under water and a couple of leaks in the office roof, we were lucky to avoid any major flooding, and the blue skies are back again. Not much fun for Kristi who moved house right in the middle of it all! With the annual slowdown in the exhibition industry over December & January, Triga manufacturing has been relatively quiet, however we’re gearing up for busy time again as the season kicks back into gear and the pace has already begun to pick up. Beau is busy reconfiguring 3 large exhibition stands that were built last year and at times the warehouse floor is like negotiating a maze of wooden crates and Triga hardware. We’re happy to report that the premier AFL side in the country, the Brisbane Lions, are now on board with Selby’s after the appointment of their new Event Manager, with whom Kristi had a built a close relationship while in her previous position at Diageo. Proof once again of the importance and benefits of building strong relationships with our clients. Footnote: Thanks to Cameron for the AFL lessons he’s been giving Gary who, by his own admission, knows nothing about AFL!

Ever wondered what the Interstate offices look like?

IT News The electronic tracking of the orders through Production is almost in full swing now with only a few key areas to have the finishing touches done to the data entering work stations. As you walk through the Melbourne factory you will have noticed a few computers appearing in key areas. These PC’s are running a program that allows the production staff to enter details of the orders they are working on. The information is pretty basic at this stage capturing the start and finish of each process. As the system develops we will be able to add additional fields to capture more information. Phase one: The Art room have been using the data entry with great success along with the Digital and Screen print areas. Phase two: The print transfer area and fabric cutting areas have their work stations and once again the information gathered here has been a great help in tracking the progress of each order. Phase three: The PC’s for the vinyl cutting area and washing/curing areas are ready to go. We will have some shelving made and installed mid February. This whole project could not be successful without the help of everyone in the factory, a big thankyou to everyone who is currently entering their daily data and look forward to the next group of people joining in. Making life easier!!

Watch out for the new bright yellow stock labels.Watch out for the new bright yellow stock labels. A new printer was purchased for the warehouse to be used for the labeling of all stock. Bright yellow labels will be used to make the identification of stock easier and will have a barcode to assist with stock takes in the future. No excuses for lost or missing stock. Hmm might need that for some of the staff.

Selby’s Social Committee Swings into Action Our first event for this year – Australia Day BBQ – was a hit. It is great to get everybody together (even for half an hour) so we can all mingle and have a chat. As discussed at the BBQ the social committee are planning a few small events over the year so keep an eye out for the posters around the office & factory. If you have any ideas or suggestions just let Maria, Barb, Ronnie, Doss, Jess, Sandra or Tracie know….

If you have any news that you would like to share in the next issue of ‘Connections’, please e-mail, or speak to Jess or Doss.

From the top Hi everyone, I hope everyone has had a great New Year and is ready for a productive and busy 2012. This year we will continue to make changes throughout the company that will help us improve what we do and how we do it so that we get the best result for our clients and ourselves. As part of this we will be introducing a new quality system so that we can provide the best quality product to our clients. The new quality procedures will be introduced next month and we look forward to your participation in improving the standards and quality of all Selby’s products and service so that we not only meet our clients expectations, we exceed them!! I’m also going to a trade show called FESPA Digital that is being held in Barcelona from the 21

st to the 24

th of February. I will be looking at flatbed and textile printers as well as new

materials and many other associated products. There will be approximately 400 exhibitors from all parts of the world. I’ve been to this show in the past and it is very interesting, extremely busy and very informative. Another advantage of these shows is to meet suppliers and companies like ourselves to see what the trends are in other parts of the world. I look forward to sharing this with you when I return. Marc
