Some years ago now I sat in my home on a Sunday morning and waited for the boys to return from the corner store with a few items for their mother and a paper for me. When they arrived, both of them had a paper tucked under their arm. “Two papers?” I ask. “Yeah you get this great poster with a paper,” comes the reply in stereo.
I examine the poster.
It is great.
Let me try and describe the scene for you as it was in an era when sport was still played at the highest level, and there on the field were 13 people - frozen in time. The entire Australian team – all 11 in their distinctive cricket uniform, one umpire and one disconsolate South African cricketer without a bat.
It was the 1999 World Cup semi-final and the Australians had just gotten the last South African batter out, causing the game to be drawn. With their better run-rate, the Australians progress to the final and the South Africans graciously bow out.
It’s a time of excitement. Players have smiles. Hands are raised for ‘high fives.’ There is a lot of backslapping. It is a picture of the ‘winners are grinners’ concept.
I pause to reflect on what sort of picture it might have been if the South Africans had scored one more run. What would the scene have looked like? No doubt things would probably have looked far different. As some of you would know, and as history records, the Australians went on to win the World Cup in convincing style.
No doubt the other teams would console themselves with the thought that next time they’ll do better. It’s something we all do when our team falls short. When second or third (or even last) is all that we can muster, then of course our response is ‘next time’, because we know that there can only be one winner. This reminds me of the words written by the Apostle Paul almost 2000 years ago:
You’ve all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win. All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal or a crown that tarnishes and fades. You’re after one that’s gold eternally.
I don’t know about you, but I’m running hard for the finish line. I’m giving it everything I’ve got. No sloppy living for me! 1Cor. 9:24-26
By the way if you like cricket, it’s a great poster to have, [you can see it here: https://www.cricket.com.au/news/feature/australia-south-africa-1999-world-cup-sliding-doors-shane-warne-steve-waugh-lance-klusener/2019-07-05] just don’t forget the ‘crown that will last forever’.
It’s worth a thought

KEYBOARD LESSONSDear Parents,As students begin the
transition back to onsite lessons many are keen to start their keyboard lessons again as well.
Unfortunately the Department of Education has ruled that instrumental teachers cannot return to onsite face to face lessons until term 3.
The VALUE for Week 8 of Term 2 will be:
Self-discipline is training and control of oneself and one’s conduct, usually for personal improvement.
“By constant self-discipline and self-control you can develop greatness of character.” Grenville Kleiser
“Happiness is dependent on self-discipline. We are the biggest obstacles to our own happiness. It is much easier to do battle with society and with others than to fight our own nature.” Dennis Prager“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful
fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12: 11
self-discipline
This means that all students who took up online/Zoom lessons during term 2 will continue to receive their lessons online until the end of term 2.
For those who wish to return to their keyboard lessons at school in Term 3, please either call Music Foundations on
0404 469 220 or email [email protected].
We really hope to see you all back at a keyboard very soon.

THE SMILEDuring the past couple
of weeks, Year 5A students researched information about a famous painting called ‘The Scream’ by Edvard Munch. They learned how to differentiate facts from opinions through a careful study of what people have written about the painting. After completing their research, they created their very own images like Munch’s paintings but rather than screaming out of fear,
Page 8
they created happy faces. First, the students took pictures of their smiles and then edited their pictures using a special app to make them look like famous paintings! The ‘paintings’ are called ‘The Smile’ and are a reminder as well as reflection of all the things that they are grateful for in these difficult circumstances. The pictures and poems are reflections of the resilience and hard work shown by the students as they learned online for the past few weeks. The teachers are very proud of their efforts! Following are some statements from students’ gratitude journals.
