FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ST. FLORIAN PARISH - JULY 15, 2018
The term “Apostle”, means to be “sent out”. Their first task as apostles was “to be with Jesus” and the second task was “to be sent out”; carrying out the same ministry that Jesus has been doing. They were to go in pairs and not by one’s self; for, alone one was more susceptible to be overcome by discouragement, fear, anxiety, and temptation especially contributing one’s success to oneself instead of God. They were granted a share in Jesus’ divine authority, so as to advance His conquest of the realm of evil. Jesus travel instructions (“A walking stick”, was a biblical symbol for authority), no sack meant they could not accept provisions from others for their journey. This “poverty” was to dispose their minds and hearts to always rely on Jesus; not to rely on their own resources but on God’s all- sufficient providence. Because they were being busy occupying themselves with God’s work, God would be occupied with their daily needs. Their simplicity of life would help them be free of distractions and be focused entirely on their mission. Their need for food and shelter would call forth hospitality in those to whom they ministered. Their lack of material possessions gave credibility to their message. The shaking of the dust from their feet was a gesture of repudiation (contempt); it was a solemn warning to those who rejected the apostles’ message. For the Jews, the soil of Israel was holy. Upon entering Israel after a journey they would shake the pagan dust off their feet as a sign of separating themselves from Gentile ways. This gesture would serve as a testimony against such unreceptive villages on the day of judgment. It was also a reminder to the apostles not to be discouraged by resistance they will sometimes encounter. Their job is to carry out their mission obediently; success is in the hands of God! Fr. Ralph-
Elias

Missionary Cooperation Plan
Fr. Lizardo Herrera from Peru
This year's Missionary Cooperation Plan (MCP) Appeal is this weekend.
Today,s second collection will be for this purpose. Please, if you are issuing a check, make it payable to St. Florian Parish and mark MCP in the memo space. Envelopes will be provided. This Appeal is facilitated by The Society for the Propagation of the Faith on behalf of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. We welcome missionary Fr. Lizardo Herrera from Peru who will tell us about their work and ministry. I thank you so very much for your generosity! Fr. Ralph-Elias
The Augustinian Missions of Northern Peru Pope Francis has called for a renewed commitment within the Church to missionary work in developing countries. “Where does Jesus send us?” he asked pilgrims at his first World Youth Day. “There are no borders, no limits: He sends us to everyone.” For over 50 years, the friars of the Midwest Augustinian Province have been sent as missionaries and stewards to the faithful and needy in Northern Peru. Recognizing that the call to service pushes us beyond our borders, the Midwest Augustinians accepted the invitation from Pope John XXIII to rebuild the Church in the impoverished regions of Peru in 1962. Today, we serve over 600,000 people daily, spanning from the desert area of the Pacific Coast to the rugged terrains of the Andes Mountains. Thanks to the charitable gifts we receive from parishioners in the United States, we are able to ordain native clergy, who staff parishes, teach in religious educational institutions, and promote social justice projects. We are also in the midst of constructing the campus of St. Augustine High School, in Trujillo, which will provide a much-needed source of revenue in years to come. We have also begun programs to prevent and treat diseases, provide clean water to the poorest of the poor in the desert, and promote women’s rights and equality. Thank you for including the Augustinians in your parish’s missionary appeal this year. With your prayers and financial contributions, we can truly move one step closer toward reaching God’s Kingdom on Earth. God bless you, and your Diocese, family, and parish!
Fr. Lizardo
