Stage 3 Home Learning Grid – WEEK 4 - Term 2 2020
Dear Parents and Carers of years 5 and 6 students, the work below covers week 4 of Term 2 in a grid-like structure. It covers all key learning
areas (KLA) and reflects the work that students will be working on at school within their classrooms. It is a continuation of the current
programs that teachers have been using, although adapted for student directed learning. We have given you guidance as to which lessons you
might do on which days, but it is fine to mix it up and do different lessons on different days if it works better for you. Please work through
it at your own pace. We advise that you use a lined A4 workbook should you not have access to a digital device with access to the internet.
Student check-ins – Students should check in with their teacher each day on OneNote on their student check-in page in their Collaboration
Folder. If students have a question about their learning, they can ask their teacher on OneNote. If students do not check-in within a few
days, school staff will call you at home to check on their ongoing learning.
Learning on OneNote - We love seeing our student's achievements and the work they are completing at home so we can offer feedback. We
encourage students to complete their work in their digital folders (the one that has their name on it) on OneNote daily. It makes our day
that extra special, knowing they are enjoying learning from home.
Remember - Log onto Reading Eggs using the details provided by your teacher and continue with your level or read some books and make up
some stories with your family. It is important to get up, move about and keep your mind and body healthy too! Take advantage of brain break
links throughout the day. Most importantly take time out to enjoy each other’s company, the sunshine and your backyard.

MONDAY
Today is a reading/listening only day. Be sure to reflect on each chapter in
Bridge to Terabithia as you go.
Read chapter 5 of your hardcopy book or listen to Chapter 5 here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJJa_3IZdQw
Summarise the chapter in a paragraph in your digital folder on your class
OneNote or in your A4 workbook.
Impromptu speech presenting
is an important skill to have.
You basically need to ‘think
on the spot’ about a topic
that you feel is important.
Give a 1-minute impromptu
speech to your family about
the importance of
sustainability.
Summarising is one of the
Super 6 Comprehension
Keys. When you
summarise, it’s important
to think about these points.
1. What was it about?
2. What were the
main ideas?
3. What was most
important?
4. Any key examples?
Another question to ask
yourself might be “if I was
to tell another person
about the chapter, how
could I do this in a few
sentences/paragraphs?”
TUESDAY
In your digital folder on your class OneNote or in your A4 workbook,
answer the following questions on Chapter 5:
1) What would Janice Avery and her friends make the little girls do each
morning?
2) Why did Jess tell May Belle to keep quiet about the Twinkies?
3) What did Leslie tell May Belle that would happen to Jess, if he fought
with Janice?
4) What did they promise May Belle?
5) What did Leslie say girls like Janice hate most?
6) What did they decide to do?
7) How did Leslie distract Mrs. Pierce and stop her going in to the
classroom?
8) What did Wilma Dean whisper loudly to the others on the bus that
afternoon?
9) What did Billy Morris say?
10) Why were May Belle's eyes shining?
Hold a spelling test with
yourself and a sibling (or
parent/carer). Get your
sibling/parent/carer to say
random words and try to spell
them on a piece of paper,
mini whiteboard etc. See how
many you get correct. If you
get any wrong, try and find
out where you went wrong so
the next time you spell the
same word you will get it
correct.
Remember the following
when answering
comprehension questions:
• Read the text again
(or watch the video
again) and pay
close attention
• Look and listen for
key words and
phrases
• Answer the
questions in full
sentences
• Ask for assistance if
you need any help
• Skip any questions
that are too
difficult and come
back to it at the
end
• Have a go!
WEDNESDAY
Reflect on the following chapter in Bridge to Terabithia as you go.
Read Chapter 6 of your hardcopy book or listen to Chapter 6 here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au4T5CA7pGU
Summarise the chapter in a paragraph in your digital folder on your class
OneNote or in your A4 workbook with a particular emphasis on why Jess’s
dad was so angry about the racing car.
Captions are usually a
sentence or two that explain
what is happening in an
image, drawing or photo.
Some photos are quite funny
to caption! Caption this photo
below in your digital folder on
your class OneNote or in your
A4 workbook:
When you are summarising
remember SUM:
THURSDAY
Digital - Log onto Soundwaves
(https://online.fireflyeducation.com.au/services/student_login/soundwave
s) and complete Unit 14 (bee) “ee ea y eo i ie e ”
Year 5 - miss523
Year 6 – shut902
Non Digital - Go for a walk around your house/backyard and have a think
about what words have the following in them:
• ee = make the ‘ee’ sound like bee
• ea = make the ‘ee’ sound like eat
• y = make the ‘ee’ sound like story
• eo = make the ‘ee’ sound like people
• i = make the ‘ee’ sound like litre
• ie = make the ‘ee’ souns like chief
• e = make the ‘ee’ sound like metre
List all the smaller words that
you can find inside this big
one.
International
Make a set of
Match/Memory cards with
“ee” words (e.g. see, meat,
baby, people) to play with
someone in your family.
Start with a small amount
with your targeted
graphemes and add more
in as you go. You could also
use these cards to play a
game of Snap or even Go
Fish.
Make a list of 20 words that you have found, 3 x words with each of the ‘ee’
grapheme combinations. Write this list in your A4 workbook.
FRIDAY
Reflect on the following chapter in Bridge to Terabithia as you go.
Read Chapter 7 of your hardcopy book or listen to Chapter 7 here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIP7xyDSmu4
Summarise the chapter in a paragraph in your digital folder on your class
OneNote or in your A4 workbook with a particular emphasis on why Leslie
and Jess were spending less time together.
Note taking is an important
skill to have. Click on the
following link to experience a
talk by a keeper regarding the
deadliest animals in the
world:
https://www.youtube.com/w
atch?v=gWKGuSZp1PA. Don’t
forget to include key words.
Look back at your notes and
see if they make sense.
When you are
summarising, you could
also think of this:
Somebody (main
character), Wanted (what
did they want), But (what
was the problem), So (how
was the problem solved),
Then (what is the
resolution).
FRIDAY
SENTENCE A WEEK - Compound Sentences – using ‘while’
Finish these sentence beginnings making sure you have two independent
clauses. Highlight the two independent clauses.
• The storm raged while …
Write your own compound sentence using ‘while’. Do this in your digital folder in your class OneNote or in your A4 workbook.
Watch the following youtube
clip on crossword puzzles:
https://www.youtube.com/w
atch?v=wfae2G7zmJg. Now
create your own crossword
puzzle using 10 of your list
words (5 for across and 5 for
down).
While as a conjunction can
mean during the time that
or at the same time as.
e.g. Sally cooked dinner
while John cleaned the
kitchen.
It can also indicate a
contrast (meaning whereas
or although)
e.g. Alice enjoyed playing
touch football while
Samuel preferred soccer.

Mostly melting Complete the experiment below at home: Here is the link to Mr Murray’s experiment video- https://youtu.be/plL1Jf-5Pbo Preparation 3 frozen ices cubes, 1 frozen milk cube, one cooked (overcooked) and one normal piece of chocolate and 2 bits of fruit of the same size one frozen. Look at and record descriptions of the unfrozen items in your Term 2 science journals. Remove the frozen items and your burnt chocolate and record descriptions of how they are different by putting each item next to its unfrozen pair. Look at the ice, frozen milk and the fruit can you see ice crystals in them. Have a smell of the burnt chocolate and the unburnt chocolate can you smell the unburnt chocolate; can you still smell the sweetness in the burnt chocolate. We will be asking this next question every week:
• Can you reverse the process and return each item back to normal? Record your hypothesis.
• Will the milk fruit and water look the same when they thaw?
• Can you put the burnt chocolate in the freezer and return it to normal? Test this and record what happened in your science journal.

Bullying Prevention: Recognising Bullying
2nd Step
Last lesson we looked at what bullying may look like and if you believed it was fair or unfair. Today you will be learning about the types of
bullying and the definition. We all know that bullying is wrong and unacceptable, but if we are to create a safe, respectful school, we need
to be able to recognise bullying and know what can be done about it.
In your digital folder on your class OneNote or in your A4 workbook, write the following types of bullying under the correct headings by
creating a table similar to the example: pushing, tripping, spreading rumours, excluding, name-calling, teasing, sending mean emails or
texts, writing mean things about someone on social-networking sites, name-calling. Some may be both.
E.g.
Face-to-Face Behind-the-back Both
Bullying is when one or more people repeatedly harm, harass, intimidate or exclude others. Bullying is unfair and one-sided. Write a
definition of what ‘unfair’ means to you in your digital folder on your class OneNote or in your A4 workbook.

Translation
Land of the morning
Child of the sun returning
With fervour burning
Thee do our souls adore.
Land dear and holy
Cradle of noble heroes
Ne’er shall invaders
Trample thy sacred shores.
Ever within thy skies and through thy clouds
And o’er thy hills and seas
Do we behold the radiance
feel the throb of glorious liberty.
Thy banner dear to all our hearts
Research what the flag of the Philippines looks like and why
each colour is used. What does each colour symbolise?
Draw the flag of the Philippines on a separate piece of
paper.
Its sun and stars alight
Oh, never shall its shining fields
Be dimmed by tyrants might!
Beautiful land of love, o land of light
In thine embrace ’tis rapture to lie
But it is glory ever, when thou art wronged
For us thy sons to suffer and die.
Answer the following questions:
• What instruments do you hear? • What type of tempo (speed) does it have? • Why do you think they used these instruments to create this type of
tune/sound? • Apart from the language, what makes this anthem different to the
Australian National Anthem? • How does the sound of this anthem make you feel? • Do you like this piece of music? Why/why not?
Record your findings in either in your digital folder in your class OneNote or
