Project Brief

In the “11th Five-Year Plan” the Chinese government is planned to invest 32 Billion Yuan to safe drinking water. Three times as much as the “10th Five-Year Plan”. It is planned to enable 160 million rural residents to access safe drinking water during the “11th Five-Year Plan period, and provide safe drinking warer to all rural residents before 2015.

The The Taihu Lake and surrounding waterways are polluted and the air quality of the city is poor. Urbanisation has created an increase in the volume of industrial waste. We will clean up and make better use of the waterways and the lake. The Chinese government is attempting to address air pollution but we will look for opportunities to improve air and surface water quality in all of our development pro-posals.

Manifesto - Designing out of Pollution

The studio research provided a clear issue that China was facing, which was the serious pollution of its water resovoirs and lakes. The Chinese governent is investing money which it has highlighted within its current 5 year plan to improve the quality of water. The project being undertaken is a water research and visitor center that will become a center of research that will shared with the government and create a greater awareness amongst the public with regards to the importance of water safety. The research will shared across the university and will seek to improve the quality of water within areas of Suzhou.
