September 7—There’s a new lunch menu in New York City schools. New chefs want to offer healthier options. But they are off to a rough start. Many students have a habit of eating only junk food.

So, what’s for lunch? Both chefs and kids love burgers. Chefs serve up nutritious veggie burgers. But students don’t bite. They want meat burgers. The veggie burgers have a “weird   avor,” one student says.

Chefs know that side dishes can make or break a meal. Kids think so, too. So, chefs offer baked fries and vegetables. However, students

prefer fried fries. One student thinks vegetables are not very appealing. “They don’t taste good,” she says.

Chefs like to provide dessert. Kids also want dessert. That’s why chefs offer fruit. Does that work? No! Instead of trying a pear, students select cookies from vending machines.

Chefs keep trying. But nothing is working! How can they satisfy students and make food healthier? The girl who hates veggies has an idea. “You have to hide the vegetables where I can’t see them,” she says.

The World Loves BugsMost people think bugs are just delicious. In fact,

80 percent of people around the world eat bugs. Some families in Venezuela roast tarantulas over fires. In South Africa, many people go buggy over fried termites. In Japan, diners may spend as much as $40 on one plate of baby stone flies!

Most Americans, however, think bugs are gross. The only Americans you might see eating bugs are those trying to win a million dollars on TV. The average American would much rather eat a juicy burger than a juicy bug!

Are bugs really disgusting? Your answer probably depends on what you’re used to eating. That’s how most people decide what’s good and what’s gross. But there’s more to the story. How nutritious are bugs, compared with burgers? How hard is it to grow and cook bugs? And do burgers really win the taste test?

Here’s to Your HealthDoctors say that a diet high in protein and low

in fat is a good way to improve your health. It can prevent heart disease or diabetes.

The average beef burger is packed with protein! A burger with all the fixings has about 25 grams of protein. Burgers also have about 27 grams of fat.

Fast FoodThere are also big

differences between how we get bugs and beef. Bugs and cows can both be raised on farms. Crickets are raised in just six weeks. Farmers need only 100 pounds of feed to raise 45 pounds of crickets. However, cows take two years to raise. To get 45 pounds of beef, farmers must use a whopping 1,125 pounds of feed. That’s ten times as much feed as crickets need.

Burger restaurants are much easier for Americans to find than bug stands. Many fast food restaurants sell burgers. But bugs can be found only in specialty stores and restaurants and online.

At home, both bugs and burgers are easy to cook. Burgers are usually fried up in a pan. Bugs can be made this way, too. Just add salt and ketchup and enjoy! But watch out: Some bugs are poisonous!

The Taste TestBurgers taste meaty and salty—flavors that

appeal to most Americans. Bug-eaters say bugs are yummy, too. Unlike burgers, bugs come in a variety of complex flavors. A type of Mexican stinkbug has a cinnamon flavor. Most bugs are crunchy on the outside—like popcorn!

Bugs are nutritious, cheap, and yummy. Will Americans adjust their tastes and learn to love them? We’ll have to wait and see.

So, the next time you suffer from a bug bite, remember—it might be time to bite back!

Kids today aren’t very healthy. It’s time to do something—before it’s too late.

Getting Healthy Sixth grader Zac Garcia wasn’t feeling so good.

On an average day, he was tired. He didn’t have much energy. So, he decided to improve his health. First, he adjusted his diet. He ate larger portions of fruits and vegetables. He also ate nutritious snacks.

Then, Zac adjusted his exercise habits. He had always been active. But he wanted to do even more. He started riding his bike more often. He started walking more.

Within six months, Zac had lost 10 pounds. These days, he has less fat and more muscle. He also has more energy. “I used to run a mile in 10.5 minutes. Now I run a mile in only 9.5,” he said.

Get PhysicalMany kids neglect to exercise enough. The

average kid spends less than 15 minutes a day working out. Being active can be a challenge. But it can also be fun. Zac chose biking and walking. There are a variety of ways to get exercise. Any of these activities will burn 150 calories:

Burgers and FriesNot every kid is as healthy as Zac. In fact,

in 2008, nearly one in three U.S. children were overweight, and 16 percent were obese. That’s more kids than ever before. Back in 1980, for example, only 5.7 percent of children were overweight.

What’s going on? Experts say many American kids prefer fast food to healthier options. It’s a favorite source for food. Americans spend $110 billion on fast food. That’s more than they spend on movies, books, magazines, videos, and music—combined! The average American eats three burgers and four orders of french fries per week.

Bullying is a major problem in many schools. Bullying is widespread and can have long-lasting negative effects on victims.

More than half of all kids ages 8–11 worry about bullies (DeSilva 100). Some victims can’t focus on schoolwork. Others skip school to avoid bullies. Some victims feel so upset that they may become bullies themselves (Wilson, Johnson, Diego 92).

The effects of bullying can last a long time. A girl named Keesha was bothered by bullies who called her names and threw food at her (Bromley 94, 96). The bullies were suspended, but Keesha still feels troubled when she thinks about them. Another victim says she is always nervous in school, even though her bully was moved to a different class (Bromley 96).

In conclusion, bullying is a serious problem for grade-school students. Victims of bullying suffer when they are bullied. In fact, many still feel the pain long after the bullying stops.
