Next rabbit anti-VWF antibodies coupled with peroxidase (Reagent 2) bind to the remaining free antigenic de-terminants of the bound VWF. The bound enzyme peroxidase is revealed by its action on the TMB substrate (Reagent 3). After stop-ping the reaction with a strong acid, the intensity of the colour is directly proportional to the con-centration of the VWF:CB initially present in the plasma sample.

Only the VWF functional multi-mers of high molecular weight can bind to collagen. A decrease VWF:CB level reflects a quantita-tive or qualitative disorder of the VWF multimers. The ratio value of [VWF:CB]/[VWF:Ag] is useful to differentiate type 2 subtypes of VWD in which a loss of HMWM occurs. This assay allows one to distinguish the subtype 2A (very decreased [VWF:CB]/[VWF:Ag] ratio) from the subtype 2M (normal or slightly decreased [VWF:CB]/[VWF:Ag] ratio).

Von Willebrand Disease (VWD) is the most common inherited bleeding disorder. Clinically, it is often characterised by muco-cutaneous haemorrhages.
Three principal types of VWD have been defined:
• Type 1 corresponds to a quantitative deficiency of VWF; classically, type 1 is the most frequently encoun-tered (70 to 80% of VWD); however, this notion is un-der discussion;
• Type 2 refers to a qualita-tive deficiency of VWF; the defect is often located in the multimeric structure;
• Type 3 is characterized by virtually a total absence of VWF in both the plasma and cellular compartments.
Furthermore, VWF deficiencies may be associated with several clinical states such as myeloma, lymphoma, systemic lupus ery-

The iHemOStasis tablet application serves as a haemostasis primer for anyone looking to increase knowledge in the area. The uncompli-cated user interface offers four areas of interest:
Coagulation Cascade: Major coagulation mechanisms are animated along with detailed explanations of each phase, including intracellular and extracellular components.
Quick Guide: Detailed descriptions of the most current assays used to examine hemostasis in a global fashion along with various therapies, disease state classifi-cations and decision trees.
Special Focus: Product literature sup-porting Stago’s anticoagulant, thrombin generation and flow cytometry products is housed, along with reference ranges for hemostasis tests in childhood and pregnancy.
Clinical Cases: Three case studies are presented, along with quizzes to test the viewer’s knowledge.
The Haemoscore App is available for tablet and smartphone from the Apple Store and Google play.
Clinical scores and algorithms play a central role in modern patient care de-rived from evidence-based medicine.
Evidence based medicine provides guidelines to physicians aimed at im-proving efficacy and safety of patient management.
An international expert panel has devel-oped this application that compiles, in a clear and simples way, most recognised and useful clinical scores and diagnosis algorithms in the field of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
Each algorithm includes the indication and a brief interpretation emphasising the most relevant aspects of each one followed by some representative refer-ences.
We hope this application may guide the clinician in the most appropriate diagnos-tic strategy, answering some of the questions that may arise when treating thrombotic and bleeding problems.

cine Student Awards Night (May 24, 2016)
Jaelyne received Top Student in Microbology,
Top Student in Pathology, Top Graduate in BBi-
omedSci in Lab Medicine, Top 10% of Gradu-
ates, Top Fourth Year Student, and the IBMS
President’s Prize awards.
Jaelyne is a Microbiologist with Microgene x, a
molecular microbiology company in Mel-
bourne, where she performs DNA sequencing
to iden fy microorganisms to species level.
Congratula ons to Jaelyne Birrell for winning
the Stago Prize awarded to the best Bachelor of
Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) stu-
dent in their final year of study at RMIT in 2015.
Not only did Jaelyne win the Stago Prize she al-
so won the School of Medical Sciences Prize
awarded to the best student from an under-
graduate program in the School of Medical Sci-
ences in 2015 as well as the Pro Vice-Chancellor
Health Prize awarded to the best student in
their final year of a Health program, selected on
academic achievement and contribu ons to
School and University ac vi es.
