ARROGATE CONFIRMED FOR SAN PASQUALBy Claire Novakt @BH_CNovak

Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Arrogate is set for a start in the Jan. 1 San Pasqual Stakes (gr. II) at

Santa Anita Park as long as the talented son of Un-bridled's Song emerges in good order from his latest bullet work, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert said Dec. 27.

With Martin Garcia aboard Tuesday morning, Arrogate clicked through six furlongs in 1:12 1/5 in what Baffert called "Really easy, cruise mode."

The move was fastest of 28 at the distance on the day.

The 1 1/16-mile San Pasqual will mark Arrogate's 4-year-old debut and his first start since his Nov. 5 Classic victory over California Chrome, and sets Juddmonte's colt up for a planned rematch with that rival in the Jan. 28 Pegasus World Cup (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park. Arrogate looks to add a third grade I to the list he started earlier this season when blitzing the 1 1/4-mile Travers Stakes (gr. I) in 1:59.36, the fastest win in the 147-year history of the race.

California Chrome took last year's San Pasqual, kicking off a six-race win streak in 2016 that Arrogate ended. California Chrome came back Dec. 17 to prep for the Pegasus with a record-setting performance in the Winter Challenge at Los Alamitos Race Course, his only race on his home track from 26 starts. BH

PARTNERS IN PEGASUS SPOT FOR KEEN ICEBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

Donegal Racing has partnered with Jerry and Ronnie Frankel to run grade I winner Keen Ice in the $12

million Pegasus World Cup (gr. I) Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park, Donegal’s Jerry Crawford confirmed Dec. 27.

To fund the race’s large purse, 12 spots in the starting gate were sold for $1 million each and quickly sold out. Crawford said Donegal had been eyeing the Pegasus for Keen Ice, but since they did not own a spot in the starting gate, they partnered with owners Jerry and Ronnie Frankel who did. Bloodstock agent Brad Weisbord facilitated the deal between Donegal and the Frankels.

“We’ve been pointing at the Pegasus since we brought Keen Ice back into training,” Crawford said. “(Trainer) Todd Pletcher was pleased with how he was doing and thought that was an appropriate goal.”

With 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome and Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Arrogate also confirmed for the Pegasus, Crawford knows the 4-year-old son of Curlin—who finished third in the Classic, some 11 lengths behind 'Chrome'—will have his work cut out for him.

“It would take a better lawyer than me to argue that we’re likely to beat California Chrome or Arrogate, but this is a race that third place is definitely worth running for, and we’re not strangers to races where people say we don’t have a chance—we were in the Travers a year ago when we didn’t have a chance and we won,” Crawford added, mentioning Keen Ice’s victory over Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the 2015 Travers Stakes (gr. I).

Crawford also said his partners are impressed with the way Keen Ice handled Gulfstream Park’s track in his last race, a runner-up finish to another possible Pegasus

contender Stanford in the Harlan’s Holiday Stakes (gr. III) Dec. 17.

“That’s by far the best he’s ever run on that track,” he said. “He closed well on it, the winner had things entirely his own way. Keen Ice did not, but he ran 41 feet longer than the winner. Todd has done a terrific job getting him ready for this.”

Bred by Glencrest Farm in Kentucky out of the Awesome Again mare Medomak, who was purchased in 2010 by Glencrest for $17,000 at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale, Keen Ice was a $120,000 Donegal buy at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale. His record is 2-2-5 from 19 starts, with earnings of $2,387,245. Before the Travers, he ran third in the Belmont Stakes presented by DraftKings (gr. I) and second in the William Hill Haskell Invitational (gr. I). Medomak was consigned by Four Star Sales to the 2012 Keeneland November sale, where she was picked up by Chad Schumer, agent, for $80,000. She was sent to Saudi Arabia soon after.

In other Pegasus-related news, Pegasus World Cup chief executive officer Jack Wolf confirmed internal talks by the Stronach Group about potentially moving the race to fellow Stronach-owned Santa Anita Park in 2018. While a decision has not yet been finalized, Wolf said, "From a numbers standpoint, it certainly would (make sense)." BH

FAIR GROUNDS BARN UNDER EHV-1 QUARANTINEBy BloodHorse Staff

Officials with the State of Louisiana's Department of Agriculture have implemented a quarantine

for Barn 14 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots after a horse residing in that barn tested positive for the equine herpes virus, it was announced Dec. 27.

The strain of the disease, EHV-1, can be accompanied by neurological symptoms and can prove fatal in horses. The infected horse, an unraced 2-year-old filly trained by Alice Cohn, was euthanized the morning of Dec. 26 as a result of the infection.

Horses stabled in Barn 14 will not be permitted to leave the property until the quarantine is lifted, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture reported. The horses in Barn 14 will be permitted to train during a specific period after regular training hours with no ponies or other horses present.

All horses in the affected barn will be monitored and if no horses test positive for the virus and do not show symptoms, the quarantine will be lifted after 13 days.

The quarantine will have no impact on horses shipping in for races as long as they arrive with proper vaccination documents. All horses shipping in will be required to use the Belfort Street entrance. BH

The race was the week's fastest, as runner-up Sharp Azteca earned the second-best ESF (121) of the past seven days, and third-place finisher Ten Blessings earned the week's co-third-highest number (117), which Bettys Bambino also got in winning the San Simeon Stakes (gr. IIIT). Mind Your Biscuits has run a career-best ESF nine straight times, a stretch that started with a 75 earned in his April 9 maiden win at Aqueduct Racetrack and now includes five straight three-figure ESFs.

Falcone said it was great to see Mind Your Biscuits continue to improve coming out of the Sprint.

"This is great for him. He bounced out of the Breeders' Cup great, and he gets over the track so well," Falcone said. "He just proved today, again, that he's a great horse. He's a real nice horse." BH

MIND YOUR BISCUITS EARNS WEEK'S TOP SPEED FIGUREBy BloodHorse Staff

Another race, another career-best Equibase Speed Figure for Mind Your Biscuits.

For the ninth straight time trainer Robert Falcone Jr. saddled Mind Your Biscuits to run his highest number as the 3-year-old Posse colt rallied from fourth to gamely prevail in the stretch to win the $301,380 Malibu Stakes (gr. I) Dec. 26 at Santa Anita Park.

With the win, Mind Your Biscuits earned the first grade I victory of his career one start after securing his first grade I-placing in the TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) Nov. 5 at Santa Anita. He finished third in the Sprint and will be moved to second in that race after stewards officially disqualify Masochistic, who finished second but failed a post-race drug test.

GULFSTREAM, FLORIDA HBPA MAKE PURSE DEAL FOR 2017By Jim Freer

The Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protec-

tive Association announced Dec. 26 that it has reached an agreement with Gulf-stream Park on a purse contract for 2017. The two reportedly reached their agreement Dec. 21.

Officials with Gulfstream, near Hallandale Beach, Fla., have declined comment on the negotiations with the Florida HBPA.

In a statement released late Dec. 26, the Florida HBPA did not specify the amount of daily average purses or minimum purses Gulfstream will pay out during its four race meets in 2017. In the statement, the Florida HBPA said it would provide more details of the contract in the coming days.

Bill White, the Florida HBPA president, said in the statement: "It’s a great contract for everyone—the horsemen, the track, and for Florida racing. We’re very excited."

The Florida HBPA revealed the contract calls for the elimination of a lingering overpayment in the purse account for Gulfstream non-championship meets. That overpayment will be reduced to zero at the end of 2016 and includes a cap on any future overpayments.

The overpayments date back to the period between July 2013 and June 2014 when Gulfstream and its South Florida neighbor, Calder Casino & Race Course, were racing head-to-head on weekend days.

Overpayment occurs when money paid out to horsemen in purses exceeds the percentage of betting revenues allocated to the purse account.

"The horsemen will be able to start the 2017 non-championship meet with a balanced purse account, which should result in more predictable race cards and purses," said Glen Berman, the Florida HBPA’s executive

director. "This will better reflect the current handle at the track, which has been setting records for the last couple of years. The constant overpayment status of the purse account has left current horsemen paying the bills of past years’ meets."

Gulfstream holds four meets each year. The championship meet is from early December through early April, the spring meet is from early April through June 30, followed by the summer meet from July 1 through early October, and the Gulfstream Park West meet runs at Calder from early October through late November.

The Florida HBPA also noted the contract creates an agreement to create the FHBPA Stakes Series, a series of $100,000 stakes races to be run during the 2017 non-championship meet.

The Florida HBPA statement said: "This innovative approach by the FHBPA and Gulfstream Park will reward South Florida owners and trainers who run year-round with more opportunities to race their top horses.'

And the agreement notes that for the first time all three Gulfstream-run stables will be open the entire year.

Those stables are at:• Gulfstream—with about 1,250 stalls• The Palm Meadows training facility—with about

1,200 stalls. The Stronach Group, based in Aurora, Ont.,

owns Palm Meadows and Gulfstream. Palm Meadows is in Boynton Beach, Fla., about 50 miles north of Gulfstream.

• Calder—with about 430 stalls that Gulfstream has leased through 2020. Calder is in Miami Gardens, Fla., about eight miles west of Gulfstream.

"This will provide great peace-of-mind and much-needed flexibility for the smaller stables," White said. "It adds a layer of certainty, as before there was no contractual agreement for all three stabling areas to remain open year-round."

According to some third-party reports, negotiations were complex and at times contentious as Gulfstream and the horsemen approached a Dec. 31 deadline.

In its statement, the Florida HBPA said: "As typical in the negotiation process, weighty and innovative issues were covered."

White added: "Overall, the negotiations for the contract went smoothly. I was pleased with how well it went considering the importance of the issues, and significant dollar amounts that were agreed upon.'

The negotiations for the Florida HBPA were led by Stephen Screnci, an attorney who is one of the owners on the Florida HBPA’s board of directors.

"Steve did a great job, and Tim Ritvo (Gulfstream president and Stronach Group COO) led the way for Gulfstream," said Carlo Vaccarezza, a trainer and member of the Florida HBPA board. "This is a good agreement for everyone, and we are looking forward to a great 2017 at Gulfstream Park." BH

WEEKEND'S GRADE I WINNERS TRACED FAMILIAR AUCTION PATHBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Both of the weekend's grade I winners at Santa Anita Park—Constellation and Mind Your Biscuits—passed

through a Keeneland auction as yearlings and were of-fered through an Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. 2-year-olds in training sale.

Constellation, winner of the La Brea Stakes (gr. I), was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, which is currently the leading North American breeder by earnings for 2016. The chestnut daughter of Bellamy Road—For Royalty, by Not For Love, first passed through the 2014 Keeneland September sale where Denali Stud as agent sold her for $155,000 to Northwest Stud.

Northwest Stud then pinhooked Constellation through the 2015 Ocala Breeders' Sales March sale, where the bloodstock team of Jason Litt and Alex Solis II bought her for $800,000 on behalf of LNJ Foxwoods. The filly was the co-fifth-highest price at the sale and

is now the second graded/group stakes winner among the top 10 highest-priced horses at this sale. The other is Acapulco, a filly by Scat Daddy—Global Finance, by End Sweep), who M.V. Magnier bought for $750,000. Acapulco won the Queen Mary Stakes (Eng-II) and finished second in the Coolmore Nunthrope Stakes (Eng-I) last year.

At 2, Constellation became a black-type stakes winner and finished second in the Matron Stakes (gr. II) and third in the Spinaway Stakes (gr. I). This year she has finished off the board only once in four starts, and finally broke through at the graded stakes level in the La Brea Dec. 26. She has five wins and two placings out of eight lifetime starts and earnings of $479,464.

Constellation is For Royalty's first stakes winner and her second black-type stakes runner out of three foals of racing age. For Royalty is a half sister to grade I winner El Viento (El Corredor) and grade II winner Kiss to Remember (Big Brown).

Mind Your Biscuits, winner of the grade I Malibu Stakes Dec. 26, sold for $47,000 during the 2014 Keeneland January winter mixed sale to Machmer Hall out of the Allied Bloodstock consignment. Bred in New York by Jumping Jack Racing, the son of Posse—Jazzmane, by Toccet, was pinhooked by Select Sales through the Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga Preferred New York-bred yearling sale, where he was bought back for $47,000. Mind Your Biscuits was offered again through the 2015 OBS April 2-year-olds in training sale by SBM Training & Sales and, again, was bought back for $47,000.

Trainer Robert Falcone Jr. got Mind Your Biscuits through agent Chad Summers, who is the racing manager for J Stables. The Malibu was Mind Your Biscuits' second graded stakes win of the year, having taken the Amsterdam Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga Race Course July 30. He also finished third in the TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I), though he has since been moved up to second due to the disqualification of Masochistic following a positive test result for anabolic steroids. Mind Your Biscuits now has a 4-5-2 record out of 13 starts and earnings of $795,366, accounting for the DQ.

Mind Your Biscuits is Jazzmane's first black-type stakes winner. The unraced mare has two other winners among her four foals of racing age. BH s Share this story

MIND YOUR BISCUITS A BIG WINNER FOR POSSEBy Alan Portert @pedigreeconsult

The day after Christmas was a remarkable one for Empire State stallions. First Constellation,

a daughter of Bellamy Road—who moved to New York from Kentucky for the 2016 season—captured the La Brea Stakes (gr. I). Less than 30 minutes lat-er, Mind Your Biscuits—a New York-bred and -sired son of Posse—captured the Malibu Stakes (gr. I) over Sharp Azteca, a son of New York sire Freud.

Mind Your Biscuits is the fourth grade I winner sired by Posse, a significant achievement given the stallion never scored at that level himself. However, the son of Silver Deputy was a prolific black-type performer, winning or placing in nine black-type events at 2 and 3, with five sprint stakes victories, among them the Riva Ridge Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. II), Kentucky Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III), and Lafayette Stakes (gr. III). His sole placing at the highest level was a third to Ghostzapper in the Vosburgh Stakes (gr. I), although he did finish a solid fourth in the 2003 Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I).

Posse made an outstanding start to his stud career, ending 2007 as leading freshman sire, when represented by a then-record seven first crop 2-year-old stakes winners. Unfortunately, he was never able to capitalize on that momentum, and for the 2010 season, moved from Vinery near Midway, Ky., to stand in New York. He shipped to Uruguay for the 2016 Southern Hemisphere season, and will not return in 2017. Posse has sired 32 stakes winners. Seven of these have scored in graded company, and in addition to Mind Your Biscuits, include 2009 champion male sprinter Kodiak Kowboy; dual grade I winner Caleb's Posse; and Del Mar Futurity (gr. I) winner Rolling Fog.

Mind Your Biscuits, whose earlier performances include a win in the Amsterdam Stakes (gr. II) and a third in the TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I), is out of the unraced Toccet mare Jazzmane. She is half sister to Kimchi, who earned a championship in Canada after winning two legs of their filly Triple Crown in 2006. Jazzmane is also a half sister to 2005 Queen's Plate runner-up King of Jazz. Mind Your Biscuit's second dam, Alljazz (by Stop the Music), was unplaced in two starts, but is a half sister to 1990 Nearctic Handicap winner Dargai.

Mind Your Biscuits has the distinction of being the second stakes winner, and the first non-restricted stakes winner, from the 143 starters bred on a cross of a Deputy Minister-line stallion over a Deputy Minister-line mare. This falls in line with a principle we've long observed: while there are individual exceptions, across a population, the cross of a mare under a stallion from her own immediate male-line will underperform. When such a cross does work, there is often something else going on in the pedigree, which is what we find here.

Posse is a Deputy Minister/Blushing Groom cross, by Silver Deputy, a Deputy Minister/Mr. Prospector cross. Mind Your Biscuits' broodmare sire, Toccet, is by Awesome Again, who is by Deputy Minister, out of a mare bred on a Blushing Groom/Mr. Prospector cross, so having a similar background to Posse. BH
