Thefollowing press clipping has this tosay about Mr, Williams:
"Searching for great serpents 'ntopical jungles suggests adventureslikely to test the nerve of the mostventuresome, but a snake hunter, traveler and lecturer who did it, re-turned to tell the tale, and alsobrought hack big snakes alive toprove his story. The naturalist whodid is Allen Samuel Williams, a NewYorker, long a popular figure on thelecture platform, and his companionin tropical civilization and jungle lifens well was 'Klizabeth Remington,'artist and writer, bis wife. Most ofthe snake hunting was done on theIsland of Trinidad, llrilisli West In-dies, ami in llie lowlands of the Deltaof the mighty Orinoco River ill Ven-ezuela, South America. In his epiystfor serpents, Mr. Williams' expedit-ions were assisted by bush negroes,Carilis and Warroun Indians, but he-cause nf their fear of snakes they•were not dependable; his most effi-cient aid was a thirteen-year-old Hoy

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 6, 1913.
Mrs. Sheild.
In the death of Mrs. Sheild,VesUieul lias lost one of itsmost earnest church and charityworkers. For many years Airs.Sheild has been prominent in theChildren's Country Home, Need-lework (aiild. District NursingAssociation ami Church work ofour town, and her loss will befelt by all those who have beenassociated with her in the nobleenterprises which our town hasbeen so prominent in supporting.Tlie town and her church willmiss Mrs. Sheild and mourn theloss of line of their most benevo-lent spirits.
The New High School.
It is a great disappointmentthai so lew architects respondedlo the invitation to enter thecompetition in submitting plansfur cur new high school building, which brings us to the questionas to whether il is the wisest andbest procedure to undertake suchimprovements in competition.Architecture is not a trade, it is aprofession, and anything in thecompetitive order rubs the calling'il its proper dignitv. I'P>m those!who have had the largest exper-jicuce in budding, we learn thatcompe'.itions do not insure thescr\icc.- of tin,- bc-t and most ex-perienced men in the profession. |
However, since we have enter-!*•! into tins program, we trusttile 'very best will Come of it. In;L!1 e\^::'..;. we are assured thaithere are r.h'e men upon our 'School Hoard wiio are fully ipial-ilied to judge all the merits ol'jllic i.'asc. r'.r.d feel that the matter:- ei'tirvlv sale in their hands. There i.» one tiling, however.that we hope will he kept con- [stantly in mind: viz.. that this Iis the one central building of our!school svslem. It is to be locat-ed on one of the most prominentstreet- of 'he town, and shouldlie up |.-i the latest standard inequipment and facilities as wella.- architectnrall\" beriutiful.
Since we have undertaken thisrnipovlant matter, it is to be hop-ed that the best and most up todale- In Hi •ichool building in theSlate will be erected in Westfieldas a result of tin's iindcrlaking.
one of our greatest assets. Atthe same time, we should be con-sistent. If the trees are of asgreat a value to the beauty andwelfare of our town as they areuniversally accepted to be, arc wepaying as much attention to theircare and preservation as weshould ?
We. have in the past farmedout the trimming ami care of thetrees to a contractor at so muchper tree, which seems to us notthe best mode of procedure. Thework should be done by someoneexperienced in the care and treat-ment of trees in a way that wouldpreserve their greatest value atwhatever the cost. There is en-tirely too little incentive for pro-per treatment in a per tree con-tract, and the average contractordoes not know anything aboutforestry.
During the trimming season, the service of one qualified to dothe work should be employed, and a gang of men given himthat: the trees may receive thetrimming and treatment theyneed to preserve them for theirgreatest value to the town.
Mr. Griffin's Position.
On another page is found Mr.Griffin's reply to the protest ofour Council against the smallboard of freeholders bill.
It is very evident that AFr.Griffin had his mind made up forsome months that lie would ac-cent the first opportunity to pushthrough the Legislature thesmall board of freeholders bill.Mr. (IriMin's reply to the protestleaves little encouragement butto believe that we have nothingbut an opponent in Mr. Griffinas regards this piece of legislationwhich we have so long fearedwas a part of the program ofthe politicians in F.lixabeth.
I.el us hope that the tremen-dous protest which is being putup by the people in I'uion Coun-ty ami 0.1 her counties will serveto defeat this bill before it goes tr.the ( rovernor. or. as a last resort, let us hope that Governor Field-er will see the inconsistency ofhis position in recommending thecorrection of the evil in the As-semhlv districting, of which hehas advocated the aval ion '11 tin-small board freeholder bill andveto the bill if il gets to him.

A Bad Choice.Kach day brings a protest from
some new source against the pro-posed small board of freeholdersbill. There is not a communityoutside of Elizabeth that takesany comfort in the anticipationof the control of countv affairsbv a small board, chosen bv thepolitical gang of Elizabeth.' Allthis agitation and discomfortwould have been spared had Mr.Griffin given us his views on thesmall board bill during his cam-paign last fall. Although Mr.Griffin was the father of the lastsmall board bill, which resultedin the election held under it beingdeclared uncoils* itiilioiial. ourpeople seemed to have forgottenibis fact, and went to the pollsand honored Mr. < in inn by a re-election b.-it fall. \iu-r ail. howshort are our memories anil howbad are our choice'- at times.

The Ambassador of Your HeartIt's t|ie Valentine. It Performsthe Diplomatic Service of Voic-ing Heart-Throbs. ::
There is an unfortunate misconception insome minds about the true significance of tlievalentine. The satirical caricature is re-sponsible for this. The day, properly is dedi-cated to St. Valentine, and was selected as anoccasion for the expression of love because atone time birds were supposed to mate on thatday. The valentine had its birtli in this sen-timent—a very pretty one you must ack-nowledge.
* Isn't there someone of whom you areparticularly fond, someone to whom such atoken would mean a whole lot ? Assuredlythere must he.
The valentine will admirably expresswhat, is in your heart. We have some that areexpensive, and others that are decidedlyreasonable. The prices ranrfe from the 5cand 10c varieties for the children, up to othersthat sell for $1.50. The penny post cards, too,(and we have a lot of them) can just aa trulyrepresent you as the more expensive valentine. They are all pretty.
