HYDROSTATIC AND NON-DESTRUCTIVE ELECTRIC TESTING Hydrostatic inspection test pressures for plain-end pipe are listed in Table X 2.2 of the A53 / A53M industry specification. Test pressures are maintained for a minimum of five seconds. Non-destructive electric testing of the weld seam is required on each length of ERW pipe NPS 2 and larger.

SureThread™ Continuous Weld Standard Steel Pipe: MADE FOR MACHINABILITY

Know better. Know Wheatland.

Visit wheatland.com/surethread for details.

Our process makes yours easier.SureThread standard steel pipe is hot-formed, which means the entire piece is heated during tube formation, not just the edges. Manufacturers heat and then slowly cool the steel in order to toughen it and reduce its brittleness — a process known as annealing. As the coiled steel reaches 2,450° F, rollers bend the steel into a cylindrical shape and the pressure and heat fuse the edges together. There are no flash forms in this process, allowing for a continuous weld. It all adds up to an extremely strong yet easily machinable pipe.

SureThread™: Made for Machinability

Easier on your tools SureThread’s uniform grain pattern and smooth surface cause less wear and tear on tools and dies than ERW pipe. In a recent survey of contractors, 72 percent of respondents indicated they believe SureThread is easier on tools. A new engineering study confirms their belief as fact: Threading tools use 22 percent less wattage while threading SureThread (compared to ERW pipe).

Easier on your budget The uniformity of SureThread’s grain and shape ensures that it moves more easily through the teeth of a die.

Not all pipe is the same, and it’s important to know the differences. Wheatland’s SureThread continuous weld standard pipe is easier to work than electric resistance weld (ERW) pipe because its uniform grain structure makes it easier to bend, cut and thread. That means it lasts longer, keeps costs down, and reduces wear and tear. Learn more about why contractors prefer SureThread over ERW.

Know better. Know Wheatland.

For more information, call 800.257.8182 or visit wheatland.com/surethread

One survey respondent said his dies only last for four or five jobs when he uses certain ERW and imported pipe. Such frequent replacement dramatically increases costs. Fortunately, the efficiency of SureThread helps you save money on every job.

Easier on your team SureThread’s physical properties and good machinability mean less labor in the field or in the shop — it’s easier to bend, cut and thread, thanks to its uniform grain pattern and smooth surface. In the previously mentioned contractor survey, nearly

70 percent of respondents indicated they prefer working with SureThread over ERW pipe. Specifically, 64 percent credited its easy threadability.

Cold-formed

ERW pipe is cold-formed, which means the coiled steel is

first bent by rollers into a cylindrical shape. Then the edges

alone are heated to 2,600° F by revolving copper discs that

serve as electrodes, creating a fusion weld. Finally, flash is

removed from the OD.

Hot-formed

SureThread is hot-formed, which means the entire piece of

steel is heated during tube formation, not just the edges.

Manufacturers heat and then slowly cool the steel in order

to toughen it and reduce its brittleness — a process known as

annealing. As the coiled steel reaches 2,450° F, rollers bend

the steel into a cylindrical shape and the pressure and heat

fuse the edges together. There are no flash forms in

this process.

The SureThread difference: It’s all in the manufacturingYou can see and feel the differences between SureThread and ERW pipe — think of cutting lean steak along the grain versus cutting through gristle. And it all starts with how the two types of pipe are manufactured.

SureThread pipe by Wheatland TubeWhile both ERW and SureThread pipe meet industry standards, Wheatland Tube recognizes the great benefits of using

SureThread continuous weld standard pipe, especially for smaller OD pipe and applications requiring considerable fabrication.

That’s why we’re dedicated to producing a range of SureThread pipe that meets your needs for every job. When you spec

SureThread by Wheatland Tube, you know you’re getting better efficiency, better durability and better results.

MIC SHIELD™ Antimicrobial Coating

What is MIC?Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is a problem for the long-term health of fire sprinkler and standard pipes. It’s caused when unseen biological organisms called microbes gather to accelerate corrosion on the surface of alloys, including copper, ductile iron, black and galvanized steel, and stainless steel. They leave behind nasty sludge and bacteria that can attack pipe wall integrity, damage water supply and cause full system failure.

Stop MIC before it startsWheatland Tube has you — and your black steel pipes —  covered with our MIC SHIELD antimicrobial coating. MIC SHIELD acts as both a rinsing agent and adhesive to limit corrosion from microbes. MIC SHIELD is applied in-line during pipe manufacturing and stands up to all fabrication processes.

MIC SHIELD availabilityWheatland Tube’s MIC SHIELD coating is available on all black steel standard and fire sprinkler pipe in NPS 1–4 Schedule 40 SureThread™, NPS 2–6 Schedule 40 and all NPS 1–8* sprinkler products.

Pipe Coatings

Standard Pipe Coating - CW & ERW Pipe (Black Acrylic Water Base Paint)

A special quick drying black water based paint is sprayed around the outside of the as-welded pipe. This

coating acts as a barrier and insulates the steel from the surrounding atmosphere, thereby providing about 6

months rust protection to the OD during outside storage, depending on weather conditions. Some end users

paint directly over the water based paint, after light surface preparation1.

Bare Pipe - No Coating

The as welded pipe is not protected at all against rust and will in fact be rusty upon arrival.

Pickled & Oiled – Procedure @ Sharon Tube

Pipe is pickled in a dilute sulfuric acid tank to remove the scale from the steel surface, then double rinsed and

dipped into a 12% to 16% soluble oil tank (the remaining % is water). This provides about 1 month inside

storage protection from rust (depending on conditions). This coating is not intended to protect the pipe against

rust if stored outside. Wheatland stocks very little of this P&O pipe due to the short shelf life.

Pickled & Oiled – Including Phosphate – Procedure @ Sharon Tube

Pipe is pickled in a dilute sulfuric acid tank to remove the scale from the steel surface, double rinsed and then

dipped in a phosphate tank to provide extra protection against rust. Then the pipe is dipped into a 12% to 16%

soluble oil tank (the remaining % is water). This provides about one to two months inside storage protection

from rust (depending on conditions). This coating is not intended to protect the pipe against rust if stored

outside. Wheatland stocks very little of this P&O (including phosphate) pipe due to the short shelf life.

Galvanized Pipe

Wheatland’s hot-dipped galvanizing process is fairly straight forward. The pipe is submerged in a pickle tub to

remove all the scale and rust, both inside and out. The pipe is rinsed and then dunked in a pre-flux to ensure

good adhesion of the zinc. The bare pipe is then submerged into a kettle of molten zinc. It then passes through

an outside diameter air wiper for a uniform finish. The inside diameter is then blown clean with a blast of hot

steam. The pipe cools on a cooling rack on the way to the white rust inhibitor bath.

1Painting Recommendations

The black water based coating can be painted with a wide range of topcoats. In all cases the surface of the

coated pipe should be thoroughly cleaned to remove oil, dirt, grease, and any other debris prior to applying a

topcoat. Please refer to any and all guidelines on surface preparation, application, and compatibility supplied by

the topcoat manufacturer.
