What’s the DREAM Act? If enacted it would provide an opportunity for certain immigrant students to adjust their status to that of a legal permanent resident on a conditional basis for ten years based on the following requirements:

• Age. Immigrant students must have entered the U.S. before age 16 and must not be older than 30 years old.

• Academic requirements. Students must have been accepted for admission into a two- or four-year institution of higher education or have earned a high school diploma or a general educational development (GED) certificate at the time of application for relief.

• Long-term U.S. residence. Students must reside in the U.S. when the law is enacted. In addition, those eligible must have lived in the U.S. for at least 5 years preceding the date of enactment.

• Good moral character. Immigrant students must demonstrate good moral character, a defined term in immigrant law. In general, students must have no criminal record.

AND

• Earned a degree from an institution of higher education (two- or four-year institution).

OR

• Served in the U.S. Armed Forces for at least two years.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”

Eleanor Roosevelt

The formation of Standing Together As oNe Dream, formerly known as Espiritu de Nuestro Futuro, began in November 18, 2006 when a group of 5 people—amongst where CSUSM students—attended the CSU Dominguez Hill's 2nd AB-540 Conference. In addition to this event, a CSUSM student who attended the AB-540 Conference, was present on the CA Dream Network Retreat which occurred on Dec 15-17, 2006.

It was at these two events that members learned that there were other AB-540 support groups in different CSUs, UCs, and Community College campuses throughout California.

Thus, the idea of starting a new support group was developed at CSUSM.

The organization was then established and named after its sister Chapter at CSUDH and officially recognized on spring 2007.

The name then changed to Standing Together As oNe Dream on fall 2010 due to the organization’s values of being more inclusive and supportive towards the different backgrounds in the community.

In the year of 2010, a high school chapter of STAND began in San Marcos High School by two high school students (Maria and Emma), which was made possible by their initiative and commitment to the organization’s mission.
