Called to Worship, Empowered to Serve
Join the Community Conversation!
Starmount is partnering with area congregations and community organizations to
sponsor a city-wide event at First Presbyterian Church called Community Conversations
with Debby Irving. Irving is the author of Waking Up White, an insightful
book about perspectives on race written to bring communities
together. On September 17 at 7:30 pm, author Debby Irving will lead
a presentation of the book and discussion of its themes at First
Presbyterian.
In order for Starmount to be involved in this community discussion,
Faith Formation is planning a special edition of One Church, One
Book featuring Waking Up White by Debby Irving. The plan is to discuss
the book over three sessions – and offer three meeting options for
each. We urge all members with interest in a better understanding of
race relations to check out a book from our library and make plans to
join one of the following discussion groups in each session:
Session 1: Chapter 1-16
Sunday, 8/12, 8:45-10am; Monday, 8/13, 7-8:15pm; or Thursday, 8/16, Noon-1:15pm
Session 2: Chapter 17-33
Sunday, 8/26, 8:45-10am; Monday, 8/27, 7-8:15pm; or Thursday, 8/30, Noon-1:15pm
Session 3: Chapter 34-46
Sunday, 9/9, 8:45-10am; Monday, 9/10, 7-8:15pm; or Thursday, 9/13, Noon-1:15pm

CLERGY I would like to give you an
update on the latest meeting
of Starmount’s Session, and
the good “discernment”
work they are doing. Over
the past several months, they
have been engaging in a
process of deep listening as
they attempt to discern God’s calling for this
congregation and the steps we might take in
order to faithfully live out that calling.
In July, the Session held a mini-retreat in
which they discussed the biblical concept of
“fruitfulness” and what it means for a
congregation to be fruitful. Authors, Lovett
Weems Jr. and Tom Berlin assert in their book,
Bearing Fruit: Ministry with Real Results, “We
believe that the Bible begins and ends with
an image of fruitfulness and that Scripture
throughout leads us to conclude that
churches, as the body of Christ on earth, are
intended by God to be fruitful.”
This concept of “fruitfulness” is found again
and again throughout scripture. Not that long
ago in our worship, we pondered Jesus’ words
to his disciples in John 15 in which he says to
them, “Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as
the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it
abides in the vine, neither can you unless you
abide in me. I am the vine, you are the
branches. Those who abide in me and I in
them bear much fruit, because apart from me
you can do nothing.”
A “fruitful” congregation is one that pays
attention to its missions and ministries, looking
for the impact they are making in the lives of
individuals and in the community. It is one
that reflects on its vision, mission, and core
values to ensure that the ultimate result of all
its programs and activities might be that lives
are being transformed through Christ.
I am just learning about the specific vision of
Starmount and its identified core values.
Perhaps some of you are new to this community
like me and would like to know what those are.
Starmounts “Vision” can be found on the
front of our worship bulletins every week. It
states that “Starmount’s vision is to build a
church family which: invites and welcomes
all who seek to know and serve God;
discovers and develops individual and
collective gifts and talents; and equips
individuals for service in our church,
community, and world.”
Our “Core Values” are elements that make
up Starmount’s identity or DNA. They help
describe who we are and what is important
to us. The four core values that were
identified during the latest Mission Study
are: Worship & Music - the most important
activity of the church, Community Service/
Mission/Evangelism through Service - serving
those in need locally & globally, Education
- strengthening our faith through learning
and study, and Congregational Care and
Fellowship - compassionate care in
community.
At our last meeting, the Session took time to
more deeply explore these four core
values. They discussed what was distinctive
or unique about the way we engage in the
practices listed in our four core values;
aspects of our common life together that
may set us apart from other congregations
or organizations. These distinctions will be
important moving forward as they will help
guide our specific goals and direct us to
the areas in which we should be making
our greatest investments of time and energy.
I look forward to sharing with you more of
the exciting information that is produced
by this discernment process. I also look
forward to receiving your feedback in this
process at our next College of Elders
meeting and Congregational Town Hall.
We are indeed blessed to be a part of
such a dynamic congregation, one that
has produced a great harvest throughout
the years as it has faithfully and fruitfully
listened to and followed God’s calling.
May our collective prayer be that
Starmount would continue to bear fruit
worthy of our calling.
Your Pastor,
Charlie Lee

Blessing of the Backpacks
Early this month, close to 100
children ranging in age from
three to completed 4th grade
will gather at Starmount for its
annual Vacation Bible School.
They will gather to understand
how they can discover their
strength in God. Special thanks to Cindy Lee for
taking care of all of the moving parts to make
the week a great success and to the volunteers
who will work with all of the participants
throughout the week.
But what are ways that children and their
families continue to use their strength in God?
Helping children of all ages establish a healthy
prayer life is a great way to do this! Rev. Traci
Smith offers a few suggestions for prayer practices
with children in an article included in the March
2018 issue of The Presbyterian Outlook. Here are
a few of the highlights:
Photo Prayer: Print out pictures of significant
people in the child’s life. Hold them up and
show them to the child, having them repeat
after you with each picture: “God bless
Mama. God bless Daddy. God bless
Grandpa.” And then finish with Amen. This
allows them to understand and connect faces
with those who are most important in their
lives.
Building Block Gratitude Prayer: Using plastic or
wooden building blocks in the center of the
room, have each person involved place
another block to the tower while naming
something for which they are grateful. Watch
the tower grow and then conclude with
“Amen”.
Prayer Paper Chain: have each person write a
prayer on a strip of paper and then connect
the strips of paper together in a chain. Place
the completed prayer somewhere it can be
seen by all. Keep strips of paper in a jar and
ask friends and relatives if they’d like to add to
the chain when they stop by.
These are just a few included in the article – let
creativity be your guide!
What are your favorite prayer practices? It
would be great to hear from you!
Blessings,
Pastor Kathryn

People
Congratulations! At a recent luncheon given by Senior
Resources Buddy Poole was honored
for delivering Mobile Meals for 25 years.
I am humbled by the outpouring of love and
support from my Starmount Church family. The
prayers I have felt holding me up, the cards as
a visual confirmation of Christina love, and the
contributions to the organizations that Lauren
loved. I have learned this past months that
Lauren touched many lives in her short 30
years. She will be greatly missed by her clients,
sisters and myself. I have comfort knowing that
she is in the presence of our Lord. Thank you
again for the kindness that has been shown to
me. - Much love to all, Sydney Folger
Thank you, Starmount members and clergy.
There is no way that I can ever express my full
gratitude for all that has been done for me on
the death of my wife (cards, phone calls, visits,
food, etc.). I am thankful to be a member of
such a friendly, loveable, and religious church.
I wish that I could be more thorough on my
love for all of you, but it is still rather difficult for
me to think clearly at the present time.

Seeking Sunday School and
Youth Volunteers! The Faith Formation Committee, Pastor Kathryn,
Cindy Lee and Laura Roberson have a
wonderful pool of volunteers that help to make
the children’s Sunday School programs and
Youth Group run like well-oiled machines. But,
like all machines, there is a need for additional
parts from time to time. Bottom line of Pastor
Kathryn’s terrible analogy: WE NEED YOUR HELP!
By becoming a part of a Sunday School or
Youth Group Team, your commitment will be
approximately once a month. If you are
interested in becoming involved in either
Children’s Sunday School (3-5 years, K-2, 3-5,
Youth) or helping with the Youth Group (6th-12th
grade), please talk to Pastor Kathryn, Laura
Roberson or Cindy Lee.

Yoga Snacks
My definition of yoga snacks are
little stretches that anyone can do
throughout the day. Let me share a
few of them with you.
1. Focus on your breath for three
cycles as you relax your belly
and allow the air to reach all the way to the
bottom of your lungs. Feed your body the
oxygen that it craves!
2. Do the breast stroke three times allowing your
chest to fill with air and your shoulder blades
to squeeze together at your back.
3. Reach your arms overhead and grasp one
wrist with the other hand; then lift your wrist as
you stretch your entire side. Switch to the
other wrist and repeat.
4. Kitchen sink stretch: place your hands on the
kitchen counter (or bathroom counter or the
back of the couch, etc.) and walk backward
until your arms are stretched out and your
hips are over your ankles.
5. Bonus #1: Keeping your feet and hands
where they are, drop your hips and come
into a plank.
6. Bonus #2: Bending your elbows, add a little
pushup before stretching back to the original
kitchen sink stretch.
7. Holding onto the counter, do a lunge by
stepping one foot back while the other foot
stays close to the counter with the knee bent.
Hold for 6 counts and then switch sides.
8. Touching the counter, pretend to sit in an
invisible chair behind you. Hold for 6 counts
and then stand slowly. Repeat the squat.
9. Standing, slowly drop your chin toward your
chest and continue to drop forward allowing
your head to traction your spine as you reach
toward the floor. Feel the release of your
spine lengthening.
10. Yoga snacks take only a few moments, but
they release both physical and mental stress
allowing your body (and mind) to reset. You
don’t have to do them all at once! Even one
yoga snack will make you feel better. And
there are no calories involved. ______written by Jennifer Dowler

Church Historian
History Corner
On August 1st, 1953, Rev. Allen McSween began
his ministry with Starmount. The
first week in August the family
moved into the newly
acquired manse at 2409
Berkley Place. Rev. Joseph Flora, Minister to
Youth at First Presbyterian, was guest preacher
the first Sunday in August. The following was
included in the August 2nd
bulletin announcements: “The committee for
welcoming them (new pastor and his family)
hopes that every member of the congregation
will make a short visit to their home soon after
their arrival.”
Thursday, August 20th was a very busy day for
the newly arrived pastor. He spoke to the
Kiwanis Club of Greensboro where his topic was:
“Haunting Thoughts of War and Peace” as he
was both an infantry combat officer and later a
chaplain during World War II. That evening
“an old fashioned basket picnic” was held at
the Guilford Dairy Club. Members packed a
lunch (enough for one more than came with
you). This was another way to welcome
the McSweens.
August 21st Rev. McSween’s wife, Irene,
transferred her membership to Starmount and
their three boys ages 3, 7 and 10 were baptized.
Join a Starmount Constellation –
Small Group Ministry! The Faith Formation Committee is embarking on
a new endeavor for the fall: Small Group Bible
Study! All members of our Starmount family are
stars in their own right, but stars work best in
groups where they can:
Shine – reflect God’s light individually
and light up the darkness together
Connect – work together for better
understanding of God’s will and how
we can serve Him
Lead – give direction and support to
weary travelers and lost souls in the world
The Faith Formation Committee is working hard
to identify small group leaders and participants
for the groups, which will start in late September.
Look for more information in next month’s Star
Press. If you already know you’d like to
participate in any way, please contact Ginger
Walton, Committee member, or Pastor Kathryn.

Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story
of Race by Debby Irving.
“This is such a powerful little
book for our times. Many
people are saying, ‘I'm not
racist, but I don't know how
to help.’ or…’I'm afraid I'll
say something wrong.’ This
book can help. She doesn't
preach or tell you what you
should do. She writes about
her own life and search, adds the voices and
research of others, provides many, many,
MANY resources, and leads you to discover
things for yourself. At the end of each chapter
is an assignment or something to think about,
but she (and I) strongly suggests that you
write about it. I found that it was also good to
work with others to share and talk about
these assignments. This book will help you
move from understanding white privilege to
becoming a white ally to non-whites at
whatever level of comfort is right for you.”

Canoeing the Mountains, Christian Leadership
in Uncharted Territory by Tod Bolsinger. "A
superb book on the need for
adaptive leadership in the twenty
-first-century church. With
imagination and insight formed
through his experience as a
pastor, church consultant
and seminary leader, Tod
Bolsinger, challenges leaders in
the Christian community to recognize the
unsettling reality of being 'off the map.' We
have 'trained for a world that is disappearing.'
Bolsinger offers fresh, practical advice that
integrates the best of leadership theory with
the realities of church leadership, illustrated
with vivid metaphors and real-world examples,
resulting in a seminal book on how to navigate
this new world. A must-read for everyone

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. “This is
one of the timeliest–and most
poignant–of books I’ve read on
police brutality hitting the limelight.
Author Angie Thomas humanizes
the problems between black and
white cultures through a teen girl
witnessing a cop killing her
childhood friend. There, in the brink between
dedication and insanity, protagonist Starr
Carter juggles personal life and public
activism. In the end, she must make a choice:
does she witness the havoc from the sidelines,
or sacrifice her safety for the truth? Through it
all, Thomas wields expertise in her discussion of
racial tension and black and white culture. The
parallelism of the book’s events and actual
police shootings brought the power of her
words to life… Thomas intersperses this bleak
context with comedic family antics, bringing
joy to an otherwise bleak situation. Through
purposefully crafting the kind scenes with the
harsh, Thomas demonstrates true, realistic
black families outside of the stereotypes.
Occasional tie-ins with Tupac and the Black
Panther movement guide Starr alongside the
reader to accept that justice is all we can fight
for, and not to lose hope.” Amazon.com

The Forgotten Room by Karen White, Beatriz
Williams, Lauren Willig. “A
sweeping tale of love found, love
lost, and mystery surrounding a
room in a mansion in New York
City. It's centered around families
and blooming where you are
planted, as it were. The story is told
from three points of view: Olive, a housemaid
in 1892, seeking to revenge her father against
the owner of the mansion in which she works;
Lucy, Olive's daughter, who is a secretary in
New York in 1920, seeking to find the truth
about her paternity; and Kate, Lucy's
daughter, a nurse during World War II, looking
to find acceptance in a male-dominated field
and to fight her attraction to the handsome
patient in her care. We go from one point of
view to the next and the next and then circle
around again, each time bringing the story
forward and laying groundwork for exposing
mysteries. All three women live in the Pratt
mansion at different times, and all three
struggle with life choices and following their
hearts. There are layers and layers and as you
read on, nothing is really what you thought it
would be. It's soul stirring and well written and
just beautiful.” Review from Amazon.com Call
