Where to from school is a BIG

decision. There are so many

options, so many influences,

so many reasons that make

different selections right for

different students. Matching a

student’s individual personality,

strengths, abilities and likes to a

particular career path and STAR

programme can be the start of

something really exciting…

a successful future, a career,

a world they want to be part of.

AN INSPIRATIONAL APPROACH For many students it’s not just what they learn, it’s the way they learn. This book is designed to help you help your students onto career pathways that are in tune with their personality traits – traits that the students themselves often don’t recognise as career makers.

4 Pathway Toolbox

Page 5: STAR-Info

Matching a student’s profile to a

possible career pathway and then

providing the opportunity for them to

experience that pathway is what STAR

programmes at Wintec are all about.

Our programmes are designed to give

students a taste of what they’d study

and what would be expected of them

as a tertiary student enrolled in the

full programme. When we get the fit

right and a student sees a new world

of possibilities opening up for them,

it’s inspiring for everyone involved.

HANDS ON, PRACTICAL, DO-ER

While others sit and talk, this student gets up and does! Rather than spend time theorising, they prefer to work things out with their hands as well as their head. There’s a future for them in the world of TRADES on page 34.

CARING, PEOPLE PERSON, HELPFUL

This student gets a buzz when their talent, input or understanding puts a smile on someone’s face. Making people happy is an art and they have a real flair for it. The good things in life … even better when you make a living out of them. See the world of HOSPITALITY, HAIR, BEAUTY, TOURISM, FITNESS AND OUTDOOR RECREATION on page 18.

CREATIVE, ARTISTIC, IDEAS, ORIGINAL

To this student the everyday is anything but. They see creativity in almost everything, value design and play with words. Ideas? They can’t wait to express them and express them they will in the world of MEDIA ARTS on page 8.

CURIOUS, ANALYTICAL, PRACTICAL, SOLVER

Why? Chances are that was their favourite word when they were a kid … chances are it still is. The more complex a problem, the more they’re into it. And not just airy theory, we’re talking function! Ideas, practical solutions, implementation. This student wants to make things happen and they’ll get that opportunity in the world of ENGINEERING OR SCIENCE on page 47.

MATCH YOUR STUDENT TO A PROGRAMME

Take a moment to think about your student’s personal strengths, abilities and likes, then match those traits to the programmes on the following two pages. It’s an approach that allows students the opportunity to discover and experience a pathway that could really excite and galvanise them. Get it right, and a STAR programme has the potential to set a student on the path to a successful career and better future.

SUPPORTIVE, UNDERSTANDING, CARING, LISTENER

This student really cares about people. They take the time to listen and understand. Caring, communicating, supporting, these things just come naturally to them. And so will the world of HEALTH OR SOCIAL PRACTICE on page 60.

HIGH ENERGY, TEACHER, ACHIEVER

They have high expectations … especially of themselves. As for saying something can’t be done, just watch them! Everything this student does, they give it their best shot, and they get as much satisfaction helping others achieve their goals as they do achieving their own. The world of SPORT OR EDUCATION on page 67… perfect.

OUTDOORSY, LOVES ANIMALS, PLANTS

You wouldn’t be at all surprised to see this student talking to plants or animals. They’re someone who values the environment, enjoys spending time in it and firmly believes that animals and plants respond to TLC just as much as we do. A perfect fit for the world of HORTICULTURE, ARBORICULTURE, AGRICULTURE, FLORISTRY, LANDSCAPE DESIGN OR ANIMAL TECHNOLOGY on page 76.

TECHNOLOGY SAVVY, COMPUTERS, GAMES

When someone tells this student to get out from behind the computer because the sun’s shining, forget about it. They love technology, love being the first to try out new stuff. Logic, systems, gaming, programming, if it all makes sense to them, then so will the world of INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY on page 56.

AMBITIOUS, ORGANISER, LIKES TO WIN

The drive to succeed, the vision to lead and belief in their ability to perform. This student would fit right into a business activity or office environment. Co-ordinate, control, manage, organise, success – they relate to all of those. They’ll relate to the world of BUSINESS on page 52.

Take the next step to helping your students discover their world on Page 88

GATEWAY BLOCK COURSESWintec has developed resources for students to use and gain credits while they are on work placement*. Our Gateway services include workbooks and assessment of some unit standards.

We have also developed Hospitality block courses that utilise our training restaurant – Windows on Avalon - and kitchens at the Hospitality centre on our Avalon campus. These courses offer students the opportunity to work in both the training restaurant and kitchens using these as their Gateway work placement.

* It is the School’s responsibility to organise their student’s work placement.
