Meet Joe Watts, the next CEO of Star Island

In his own words

“I am thrilled and honored to be your next CEO. My first message to you is come to a conference this summer! There are so many wonder-ful options to choose from, and in having a wonderful time on the island, you are directly helping Star Island! See you on Star!”

Revisiting first impressions of island life, 5 years laterAs most of you have known for some time now, I will be retiring from my role in the corporation at the end of the 2012 season. So I thought it might be interesting to ref lect on my impressions of Star Island that first season in 2008, and “update” those early thoughts!

It was my first experience of Star Island in the summer season. There were many new experiences to share.

Vegetation – as a gardener, this new environment was a constant source of amazement

at what survives the harsh winters…and still is a won-der to me! I especially enjoy the Memorial Day Weekend plant-a-thon, when hundreds of t iny annuals careful ly placed in f lower boxes, cot-tage gardens, and other needy areas to bring beautiful color in July and August!

• The massive numbers of daffodils and the new tra-dit ion now of br ing ing buckets of them to the Annual Meeting!

• The lilacs in full bloom, and the f ragrance they launched…

• The glorious rugosas…every color and six weeks of blooms…

• The wild flowers tucked into every rock and cranny…

• The incredible green of the lawn after a rainy July…

• Dead-heading the annuals and flower boxes as weekly therapy…and being joined by Shoalers who chat while I pull.

The transitions from con-ference to conference, each with their own identity and f lavor…and now I look for-ward to seeing each group of conferees with their specia l

Dear Shoalers,

Since Vicky Hardy announced her plans to retire and join her family in Seattle, the Star Island Board has given much thought as to how to approach the search for a new CEO. During our deliberations we recognized that an internal candidate was very interested in the position. After discussion, the Board decided to interview the internal candidate before consideration of any external search process.

I am very pleased to announce that our Board has selected Joe Watts to serve as the next CEO of the Star Island Corporation.

In our conversations with him, the Board was impressed by his passion for Star, his seri-ous interest in continuing his personal growth, and his understanding of the challenges we face. We are excited about how well Joe’s personal interests fit the needs of Star Island. Joe has a deep understanding of our traditions, and a balanced sense of how change can support our sustainability and the core Star Island experience.

We are committed to building upon the great work we have accomplished under Vicky’s leadership. We are fortunate

to have time for a smooth leadership transition from Vicky to Joe. We will be working closely together in the months ahead to implement an effective and for-ward-thinking transition plan.

You have known Joe most recently as our General Island Manager, greeting you at the “Fire & Water” orientation upon your arrival on Star. Many have interacted with Joe during his decades of engagement with Star. Joe’s love of the island started when he attended his first conference, LOAS II,

30 years ago. He started his commitment to Star as an end-of-season Pelican in 1987 and has never looked back – working in a number of seasonal and year-round roles ever since. Joe served as our Acting Exec-utive Director before Vicky’s arrival in 2008, and more recently as our Conference Center Director. Joe is a leader dedicated to Star Island, to the people who have been coming for decades, and to the people who are new to our Spirit’s Home. We will have a CEO who has already formed enduring

relationships with many of you, and has strong connections to our greater Island and Seacoast communities.

Please join us in welcoming Joe to his new position – I know he is eager to hear from you about your hopes and dreams for the future. And he’s excited to see you at the Annual Meeting in April or on the island this summer!

Now in its third year, the Gosport Regatta has expanded to a pre-season mini-con-ference. Set sail on the M/V Thomas Laighton at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, June 9 and join the race at the starting line and follow it right into the Oceanic for the awards banquet.

Back by popular demand, the Funky Divas, who are well-known in New Eng-

land, will be rocking the front porch and retired Pel Kat Gang and her Kat Gang Jazz Band, who perform on Wednesday nights at the Plaza in New York City, will highlight the Sunday Jazz Brunch. Enjoy a panel presentation on the maritime years of the New Hampshire Seacoast and

board the boat for home at 3:20 p.m. The

The 2011 season was one of the best ever for the Star Island Book Store. And the books that Shoalers most chose were — surprise! — about Star Island.

Our top three sellers for 2011 included two books recently reprinted by the Isles of Shoals Association, and a book writ-ten by Shoalers Donald Cann, Gayle Kadlik and John Galluzzo for the Images of America Series called The Isles of Shoals. The ISA-UU reprints are Moonlight Murder on Smuttynose and The Isles of Shoals in Lore and Legend, both by Lyman Rutledge.

The best-selling children’s book is a new book by Nancy Donovan called Oscar the Herring Gull, with great illustrations of the story of a Star Island gull by Susan Spellman. This book is fun for readers of any age.

The new Shops on Star website has these and other books about the Isles of Shoals, including a just-published reprint of a cookbook from the 1940s called The Isles of Shoals Cookbook, and One Woman’s Work: The Visual Art of Celia Laighton Thaxter. For the first time, you can buy these books off-sea-son by checking out the new Shops on

The inaugural Star Island Literary Festival will host Anita Shreve, author of several novels including “The Weight of Water,” which centered on the 1873 Smuttynose murders; local author Katherine Towler, author of the “Snow Island” tril-ogy; and Corwin Ericson, author of “Swell,” in exploring the theme of islands in literature. Participants are invited to inter-act with authors and those inspired by literature throughout a week in August. Visit starisland.org/litfest/ for information.


There is a rhythm to Star Island. The seasons come and go. The conference season cranks up and winds down. The Blue Book is mailed in January. March is reserved for mailing the Annual Appeal. It’s the way things are done here – well – until now!

We’re mixing it up in the Development Office by combining the Annual Appeal with a call to all Shoalers to support the Shining the Star – Ensuring the Future capital campaign. It’s a once-in-a-decade opportunity to do something really sig-nificant and guarantee that Star Island will be here for all to enjoy now and into the future.

We have added a l ittle fun to the mix with prize incentives for all who increase their gift and/or make a multi-year pledge. Return your pledge form by Sept. 30 and be entered to win fun Star Island prizes. The winners will be

As a conferee, you first heard about Star Island in a very per-sonal way, from a friend or through your church (100%). You come because you love your conference and the people in it (72%).

You’re intellectual; captivated by your conference’s theme and what you can learn (49%). Your stay on Star Island is conve-niently scheduled for you (19%) and renews your spirit (22%).

As a retreater, your friends, fam-ily and church first introduced you to the wonder of Star Island (83%). You are eclectic; your rea-sons for coming to Star are both spiritual (33%) and pragmatic. Some of you feel a personal retreat fits well in your summer schedule (53%) and some feel it is great value for the money (15%).

As a personal retreater, you’re inquisitive, as you come to Star to investigate the island (19%) and the conferences held there

(5%). Once you experience Star Island, you want to come back, either on another retreat (77%), or, even more in the spirit of our community, to attend a confer-ence (47%). This is exciting to all of us, since it’s confirmation that that personal retreaters do indeed become conferees.

40 under 40We are pleased to announce that two Shoalers were named among this year’s New Hampshire 40 under 40.

Star Island’s communication consultant Michelle Firmbach Nadeau is active in the Portsmouth community and a vol-unteer for the Portsmouth Rugby Club.

Brian Chagnon is a regular SIC volunteer getting out for open-up weekends and throughout the season to do whatever we need him to do. Brian was also nominated for a Gov-ernor’s Arts in Education Award and won the N.H. Cog Railway video contest.

The 40 under 40 awards are presented by the Manchester Union Leader in partnership with the Business and Indus-try Association and Citizen’s Bank.

• Wake-up singers in the halls in the early morning hours…and the one wake-up singer who wears a drawer from a chest in Sprague as a “mask” when he sings!

• The screams of the “polar bears” in their early morning swims…

• Dinner rituals, including but not limited to, “theme” nights (pirates?), birthday celebrations, the “ lobster bodies” cartel, and “calling out” the kitchen staff and waitrae...

• Standing at the top of the chapel path and watching my first candlelight proces-sion come up the hill from the Oceanic…and talking to a Shoaler who has actually “met” the Lady in White on her late eve-ning stroll down the chapel path…

• The Fourth of July parade, and watch-ing seven(!) fireworks displays from

York, Maine to Hampton Beach…

The call of the Sirens…the Gift Shop, the Bookstore, and the Snack Bar; many options for spending money! Set-ting a budget for the gifts and books was easy…and my family did benefit at the holidays with all the “Star” related items…the Snack Bar was harder. As a diabetic, it is a particularly treacherous Siren, but by carefully counting sugar/carbohydrates to “save-up” for a small scoop of Black Cherry…I could savor it one teaspoon at a time on the porch at sunset…and then walk off the calories with a hike down to the f loat dock and back up the hill…

Then there were the sounds of Star…the fog horn, the buoy bell, the laughter and shouts of children at play, the soft

murmur of people in intense discussions in workshops, the choirs rehearsing, the piano players in the lobby, the roar of the waves on the rocks on the Atlantic side, and the gulls…noisy, raucous, persis-tent, and the earliest risers on the island!

And most treasured of all, the many, many chats with people eager to share their stories about life on Star.

Late at night, in my room, in a non-con-forming rocking chair by the window…catching up on past issues of the New Yorker, and listening to classical music on Maine Public Radio…I know I made the right decision in 2008 to join the Star community…and I “will be back”!
