History & Highl ights OverviewLos Cabos (The Capes) is notactually a town. lt is the nameMexican tourism officials bestowedupon two once-remote BajaCalifornia communities: Cabo SanLucas and San Jose del Cabo aswell as the stretch of coast thatconnects them known as "the

Conidor."

Seafarers have long been attractedto the shores of what is now LosCabos. In the late 16th-century and

early 1 7th-century,hccording tolegend, notorious pirates such as SirFrancis Drake and ThomasCavendish concealed themselves inthe bays and coves along thesouthern coast of the BajaPeninsula, slipping out to ambushpassing Spanish galleons.

Later, Spanish missionariesattempted to convert the Guaycuraand Pericu natives to Christianity,

but by the early 1800s, Spanishsoldiers and European diseases had

decimated the indigenouspopulation.

Afterthe missionaries moved on, the

rocky spires and arches that

characterize the southern tip of BajaCalifornia went pretty muchunnoticed untilafterWorld War ll.That's when private planes beganflying in celebrities such as BingCrosby and John Wayne to go deep-

sea fishing.

Because the area was remote anddifficult to reach. it remained theprivate hideaway of a few well-heeledtravelers until the 1970s, when theMexican government completed theTranspeninsular Highway. Thehighway gave Californians a straightshot to the tip of Baja California.

It'a one of the most popular

destinations of the region. lt boastsfine beaches, luxurioussurroundings, lively nightlife andsome of the best sportfishing in theworld.

Cabo San Lucas, with a population

of 60,000, is the faster-growing of thetwo towns. ln the past few years,

swanky new hotels and condos havefilled the landscape along the 20 milecorridor separating the two towns.Superb sport fishing put Cabo San

Lucas on the map, but non-

ln 1525,20,000 lndians met theSpanish explorer and his party onthe shore, each carrying a flag madeof bird feathers. ln turn, the Spanishproduced four banderas (banners),

including one that depicted thelmmaculate Conception. This displaysupposedly subdued the Indians,who laid aside theirfeatherflagswhile a Spanish priest prayed fortheir souls.

Banderas Bay takes its name fromthe event. The baywasn'tdevelopeduntilthe 1850s when the Sanchezfamily used it as a port for silvermines. The town was then called

Puerto de Penas. Fewerthan 2,000people, mostly farmers andfishermen. lived there.

In 1888, half of the town wasdestroyed by fire. According tolegend, the damage would have been

less if most of the male population

were not attending a cockfight. ln1918, Puerto de Penas was renamedto honor lgnacio Luis Vallarta,governorof the state of Jalisco.

Only a few U.S. residents venturedto Puerto Vallarta until the 1950s.That's when airplanes first beganlanding on a dirt airstrip outside oftown. By the 1960s the town was ahideaway for movie stars whoenjoyed the charm and serenity ofthe area.

Hollywood really ignited interest inthe city. In 1963, director JohnHuston chose Puerto Vallarta as thefilm location for his adaptation ofTennessee Williams' Night of thelguana, which starred RichardBurton, Deborah Kerr and AvaGamer.

Much of the filming was done in the

deserted cove of Mismaloya. The filmgave Vallarta its reputation as asteamy romantic escape, and soonlarge numbers of travelers went toexperience it for themselves. In1968, a road was built from Tepic to

accommodate the flow of visitors.

By 1974, the boom in constructionand population was on, and the areablossomed with more than 350,000residents and aboutthree million

visitors each year.

This is a city with moderninfrastructure and conveniences thathas somehow managed to maintainits unique Old Mexico charm, unlikeso many of the other more glitzy

resorts. ln many any areas of PuertoVallarta you willfeel like you aretaking a step back in time. A stepback to a much simpler time,donkeys are still used for delivery inmany parts of this unique city.

You decide how to leave us (Boo Hoo)Express Walk Off DisembarkationWe wanted to tell you about a cool way you can disembark the ship. lt's called Express Walk-offDisembarkation. lf you'd like to participate, the only catch is you must be able to carry all of your bagsashore on your own. (So, for our guests with special needs, wheelchairs, strollers or guests with walkingdifficulties, it's probably best that you don't participate in this program.)

Disembark at your leisure anytime between approximately 7:45am-8:30am. You'll be in the first group off the ship (once it's cleared by local officials).. You don't have to worry about the color-coded tag disembarkation system which lets you

avoid the crowd in the baggage claim hall.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT NON US CITIZENS AND ALIEN RESIDENTS CAN NOT PARTICIPATE IN THEEXPRESS DEBARKATION OPTION.
