• Nebular Hypothesis: our Solar System (and other star systems) formed from a nebula that collapsed into a protostarwith a spinning accretion disksurrounding it 4.6 bya.

• Rock Line: line around a star where rock and metal can become solid. Everything inside rock line is vaporized into gas form.

• Frost Line (also ice line or snow line): line around star where ices can form, allowing larger gas planets to form.

Draw Solar System with 8

planets, asteroid belt and

Kuiper belt. Draw in the rock

line and the frost line.

• Future of Solar System?

• Planets still migrating slowly, asteroids still bombarding planets and moons, but these are minor adjustments to system, it’s very stable

• In about 5 billion years the Sun will begin to run out of fuel. It will first expand into a red giant star, and probably vaporize the Earth.

• In about 8 billion years, the Sun will explode and leave behind a planetary nebula and a white dwarf star. All remaining planets will be shattered in the explosion!
