The Star A Catholic School committed to the Lasallian Vision of Education TERM 1 WEEK 8 20 MARCH 2015 ISSUE 8 / 15 Dear St Michael’s Community PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS AND PORTFOLIO CONFERENCE EVENINGS Thank you to all parents involved in the Parent Teacher interviews and Portfolio Conference Evenings across both campuses recently. Unprecedented numbers of parents were involved this year, a significant indicator of the value placed upon partnership in achieving outstanding student outcomes. I would also like to particularly acknowledge the commitment of the St Michael’s College staff in ensuring these opportunities occurred. Not only was the format shifted somewhat this term, but the evenings also fall at a particularly busy time in the school calendar. Whilst past feedback has led us to successfully increase access for parents, it would be fair to say that issues of format and timing of reporting in general must continue to be discussed and reviewed, particularly with parents having increased access to student data through our Learning Management System, SEQTA. I would continue to encourage secondary campus parents to regularly login to the Parent Portal (CONEQTP) to keep up to date with your child’s upcoming and marked assessments, as well as their subject programs. The portal can be accessed through the front page of the College website. NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE This Friday 20 March is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. It is an opportunity for students, teachers, parents (see article next page) and the community as a whole to take a stand together against bullying and violence. This annual day provides a focus for schools like St Michael’s to strengthen the everyday message that bullying and violence at school is not okay at any time. The notion of ‘let’s stand together’ puts a focus on the role of bystanders. As outlined on the “Bullying. No Way!” website, most bullying situations include 'bystanders' - other people who watch or are nearby at the time the bullying takes place. How bystanders act when they see bullying serves to either endorse or challenge the behaviour. While the role of bystanders in bullying is complex and the appropriate way to intervene is different for each situation and for every student, it is important for them to know that they can make a positive difference. As we all know, a bully will not very often be willing to operate in isolation! Bullying behaviour seriously undermines the Lasallian ethos of building community through the development of positive relationships. As such, St Michael’s College is committed to acting on any incidents of bullying we become aware of. Bullying occurs when, typically, someone is deliberately and repeatedly hurt by another person or group. It can be psychological, emotional or physical in nature and can take a number of forms, including verbal, physical, cyber, racial, sexual or social. Everyone has a right to be free from bullying and as such, all members of the College community have a responsibility to work against bullying and seek to stop it. If you are bullied, or you know someone who is being bullied, please report it. In addition to the ongoing Pastoral Program focus on building positive relationships and anti–bullying, numerous other activities run throughout the year supporting the themes of the National Day of Action. While parents responded resoundingly that “My child feels safe at SMC” in our 2014 Parent Survey, it is still important that we continue to work together to maintain this. THE FEDERATION OF CATHOLIC SCHOOL PARENT

COMMUNITIES

Friday 20 March is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.

The National Day of Action provides a focus for schools and the wider school community to strengthen their everyday messages against bullying and violence. There is a very informative website for parents and carers which provides information about bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence in schools. This can be found at: http://www.bullyingnoway.gov.au/parents/index.html It’s well worth the look – let’s take a stand together.

MISSION ACTION DAY 2015

Friday 27 March is MAD! On this day, the College will experience one of the most significant days on the St Michael’s College calendar for 2015 – MISSION ACTION DAY.

MAD provides an opportunity for our Lasallian community to raise money for our brothers and sisters who live in impoverished conditions. As we know together, as a combined Primary and Secondary College, we can make a huge difference to the lives of others.

Thank you to all staff, students and their families for supporting Mission Action Day.

Whatever activity we are doing this year, let’s not forget the true purpose of Mission Action Day. Let us enjoy the day but, at the same time, give our best effort to support the less privileged.

Mr Matthew Williams – Director of Pastoral Administration & Mr Kym Clark – Director Lasallian Mission

MAD - SCHOOL BUSES Parents and students are advised that:

There will be no buses to and from Beverley on this day. Morning buses to Henley will be running as usual.

All students will be dismissed at 12:15 pm from the Henley Campus.

Only two buses ‘659’ and ‘660’ will be operating and picking up from the Henley Campus.

Please note: the ‘659’ does not run ‘express’ but services all stops along the route.

HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ADDRESS 26/2/2015 BY THE HON PAUL CAICA Following his visit to the College and attendance at the Academic Assembly in February, the Hon Paul Caica, Member of Colton, addressed the House of Assembly, praising the achievements of the St Michael’s Class of 2014. A copy of the address is printed below. Visit this link for further information. https://hansardpublic.parliament.sa.gov.au/Pages/HansardResult.aspx#/docid/HANSARD-11-18987

The Hon. P. CAICA (Colton) (15:41): Thank you, Deputy Speaker. As you would certainly be a witness, I often speak about the outstanding schools in my electorate, and I am blessed that I have so many outstanding schools in the district of Colton. Today, I want to talk about St Michael's College. I was lucky enough the other day to attend, on 11 February, their academic assembly and it fell into several categories. One category was the recognition of students of the highest achievement in a subject, based on the SACE achievement score, a recognition of the outstanding academic achievement which is awarded to those students who achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking (ATAR) of 95 or higher and/or an A grade in all subjects studied. It also recognised those students who achieved merit certificates awarded by the SACE Board. I am pleased to report that there were 20 of these certificates awarded to 17 of the St Michael's students. On any fair assessment, this has been an outstanding result for the class of 2014. Each year I am amazed and proud of the performance of the college and its students. Interestingly, too - and I know you will be very pleased to hear this, Deputy Speaker - of the year 12 students there was a 100 per cent success rate for all those year 12 students who undertook SACE last year. Those in attendance were treated to a spectacular assembly, which included a performance by the St Michael's College Big Band One. You, Deputy Speaker, would have enjoyed their swing/jazz rendition of Getaway. I congratulate the student musicians who took part and, of course, the director, Mr Tim Donovan, who again can be very proud of his student musicians. I was sitting alongside the principal, Mr Foley, and I saw a trombone solo by a very tall person in the band. I said, 'Gee, that gentleman certainly looks a bit older than the rest of the students. He must have been here a while.' The principal said that the 17 years that he has spent in year 12 have been his best years. Actually, it was a teacher and he did a great job. I commend his performance as well as those students. What I want to do is read out the names of those students who were presented in the outstanding academic achievement category and their ATAR scores. I recognise Jake Gazettas, 92.9 with five As; Rachelle Moses, 94 with five As; Chantelle Bardadyn, 94.05; 95.9 for Thomas Reichstein with five As; 95.95 for Felicia Spadavecchia; 96.05 for Lucy Tweed with five As, 96.2 for Scarlett Parker; 96.35 for Hannah Schwarz with five As; 96.35 for Alicia Cardone; 96.6 for Ermiony Andrushenko and 96.95 for Concetta Spadavecchia with five As. Also, there was 97.15 for Nancy Azzollini, five As; 97.35 for Adam Watts; 97.35 for Daniel Settimio, with five As; 97.35 for Alessandra Gorcilov, with five As; 97.6 for Julian Millevoi, with five As; 97.65 for Lauren Bottin, with five As; 98.05 for Michael Ucci, with five As; 98.3 for Sonya Lorenzoni, five As; 99.15 for Sabrina Sghirripa, five As; 99.25 for Chelsea Fortuna, five As; 99.4 for Eleanor Day, five As; 99.6 for Luke Butcher; and 99.7 for Adam Swan, with five As. These are outstanding performances by those students. I also want to recognise all St Michael's students who conducted themselves last year in year 12 because, whilst we are recognising those who achieved outstanding academic excellence, we know that all students put in the best they can, and we should also recognise their contribution, which, of course, the college has done, and I do here again today. It is a school that encourages all those students to strive to be the best they can be, and I know that St Michael's students continue to strive to be the best that they can be. I thank St Michael's for the contribution they make to our community. I thank them for what they do for the students in producing young people who are going to be great outstanding citizens of this state, this country and this world. As we all know, the child who knows how to read and write will be capable of anything.

The DEPUTY SPEAKER: Hear, hear! The member for Mitchell.

MUSIC NEWS “The Gen Connection”– at The Gov – Wednesday 8 April, 7:00pm This year “The Gen Connection” is on again! St Michael’s College, St Mary’s College and Blackfriars College join forces to bring you an

amazing night full of talented Big Band and choral music from our three Catholic schools. This year, performing from SMC will be Big Band 2, Big Band 1, our College Choir and the all new Senior Vocal Jazz group! We encourage you to come and bring as many family and friends as you can muster to show your support. All money raised on the night goes towards reducing all schools/parents costs for the upcoming “Generations in Jazz” trip to Mount Gambier in May. All details about booking a table and tickets for the night are on the poster displayed in this edition of The Star. Please note, an extra rehearsal for all four of our ensembles will be held this Friday in the Music Centre. Can you help with Raffle Prizes? An important part of our fundraising is the big raffle we hold on the night. If you own a small business, or know of someone who may be able to help us with some donations for prizes in the raffle, please advise Mrs Pauline Cutt or Mr Tim Donovan in the Music Office. We thank you sincerely in advance of your support.

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE 2015 Co-curricular Music Ensemble rehearsal times have been finalised for the remainder of 2015. With the increase in ensembles this year and some of the complexities involved, it has taken some time to finalise rehearsals. Please find attached the rehearsal schedule below.

CONCERT BAND Of particular note is the Concert Band rehearsal at 8.00 until 9.05 on Tuesday Mornings. All students who play wind instruments in Years 9 to 12, and any Year 8’s who feel ready, will be in the concert band from this year. This band is a wind-based large ensemble, and it is anticipated that this year the band will have over 50 students. Students can sign-in to school through the Music Office. Any questions relating to this band or the rehearsal schedule can be directed to Mr Donovan or Mrs. Cutt in the music office.

OLD SCHOLARS

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Michael (Mick) Harley ~ Class of 1956

I was one of the original 29 students at St Michael’s College, Beverley, in 1954 and I was the only non

Catholic in the school. I converted to Catholicism four years after leaving school when I was 18. As with any new establishment, the property at Beverley was a wasteland of weeds and trees. The oval was only half the size it ought to have been and was a mass of marshmallow weeds which were kept

down by the students and by the use of an old agricultural implement, the scythe, wielded by the ‘junior’ Brothers. I left school in 1956 and joined the PMG (Postmaster General’s Department – now Australia Post) delivering telegrams. I progressed through the ranks with Australia Post to Sales Executive and

Postmaster at various Post Offices.

After leaving school I joined the Findon YCW where I became President and it was there that I met Shirley McLeavey who was the Girls President who became my wife in 1967. We have 2 adult children, Tammy and

Shane, and a foster son Robert. Shane was also a St Michael’s student and is now in the Australian Airforce serving in the Middle East. In 1958 I started the Findon Skid Kids which is the sport of bicycle speedway and is still going strong to this day. www.cyclespeedway.asn.au The Skid Kids is famous for its Trick Riding Display Team where the members perform various stunts on pushbikes which includes the World Famous Fire Jump. In 1979 I was awarded Father of the Year for South Australia and in 2000, Citizen of the Year for the City of Charles Sturt and Citizen of the Year for South Australia. In 2001 I was proud to receive an Order of Australia Medal. In 2006 I was elected as Councillor for the Beverley Ward in the City of Charles Sturt and was re-elected in 2010 and 2014. I left Australia Post in 1994 after 37 years and joined Commander Communications selling telephone and other systems before finally retiring in 2014 at the age of 72.

STUDENT SERVICES

Please be aware that many of these articles have extra information that can be accessed on the Student Services Intranet page: http://intranet/secondary/student_services/latest_news/current.pdf#\

YEAR 12 CAREER APPOINTMENTS

We hope that all our Year 12 students come and make an individual appointment with either of the Career Counsellors, Ms Coorey or Mr Vizaniaris, before the end of Term 2. It is good to set some general goals, have an ATAR to aim for and find out about options. Students aiming for employment in 2016 can begin fine-tuning resumes and letters expressing interest in employment. In many cases this may necessitate an extra block of Work Experience to add depth to a resume. So the sooner we can see these students in appointments, the sooner we can begin this process. Even if students have no idea what they want to do in 2016 we would value time with them. We leave it up to students to make the appointment so they have the responsibility. During Term 3 Student Services has an additional focus with Year 10 & Year 11 Subject Selection coming in to the mix, hence we set aside time for Year 12 students in particular in Terms 1 and 2
