Georgia Gwinnett College Starfish Pilot
This briefing outlines the goals and initial outcomes of GGC’s Starfish implementation, including information on how this early alert system has been utilized at GGC. Strategic Goals: To Identify and Support At‐Risk Students
Identify at‐risk students in specific courses at key points in the term and automatically notify mentors.
Ease the flow of information between a student’s instructors and a student’s assigned mentor. Notify faculty mentors of “instructor‐initiated flags” in a timely manner.
Provide a central, online location to store shared Instructor, Mentor and Tutor notes on student interventions.
Increase access to and facilitate use of academic support services, such as tutoring in the AEC.
Increase course completion rates and the percentage of students receiving a grade of “C” or above. (not yet measured)
Solution Partner: Starfish Retention Solutions
Starfish is an early warning and appointment scheduling system that directly integrates with our existing course management system.
Starfish simplifies faculty sharing of concerns about a student by manually raising a flag. Automatically flagging students based on online grade book data in the course management system is a Starfish feature not yet deployed at GGC.
When a student is flagged, appropriate personnel are informed automatically and can intervene directly with the student.
Starfish provides a central, online location for instructors and staff to view and/or manage a student’s history of flags, notes, appointments and grades. It also sends email and calendar notifications to faculty email accounts.
