Word 2010 IntroductionWord 2010 is a word processor from Microsoft that contains powerful tools to create different types of documents. It also offers straightforward access to the Web and other Office applications, along with team sharing functionality. This objective will focus on opening and closing Word and also using the Help features.

Word 2010 Introduction (cont.)The screen background is called the "desktop", which currently displays the default Recycle Bin, the "User" folderand icons that allow you to open the "Computer" and "Network" folders. Any open applications and files are displayed on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, which allows you to quicklyswitch between these active windows. Other than the default icons for Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer and Windows Media Player, the taskbar containsno other icons, which indicates that no windows are currently open.

Starting WordOn the left of the taskbar is the "Start" button containing the Windows logo, which enables you to start applicationsand perform other tasks. Clicking on this button opens the "Start" menu.Please click on the "Start" button.

Starting Word (cont.)The most commonly used programs previously opened will appear in the "Commonly Used" list on the "Start" menuand they may be launched by clicking on their name. We have yet to open Word, so it is currently not displayed in this list and we will need to use an alternative method toopen it. Applications may be launched by clicking on "All Programs", and then selecting the application you require from thelist that appears.Please click on "All Programs".

Starting Word (cont.)When you start Word, a blank document is automatically opened and given a temporary name "Document1", whichyou will notice displayed on the taskbar and title Bar. For each file opened in Office 2010, a taskbar button will appear if certain Windows display options are selected. Toview each file name and a thumbnail view of the file, position the mouse pointer over each taskbar button.Please position the mouse pointer over the "Document1" taskbar button. Click on "Next" when you have finished.

Starting Word (cont.)All Microsoft Office programs have help files provided on installation. These files are known as "Offline" help and arealways available to the user. Help is also available "online" and requires an internet connection to access. Help windows are opened by clicking on the "Microsoft Word Help" button or by pressing the shortcut key "F1".

Offline Help (cont.)The "Word Help" window is opened, displaying a list of general topics that you can browse for information orassistance. Note that "Offline" is shown in the bottom right corner of the help window signifying that all help accessed is fromfiles stored on the computer. Let's view the topics within the "Getting started with Word" topic. Please click on the "Getting started with Word" link.

Offline Help (cont.)The help topic is now displayed, outlining the new features in Word 2010. Under the "In this article" heading, a list of subheadings is displayed in blue with a down pointing arrow in front ofthem. The arrows represent links to other sections of the article and can be used to quickly move to a section you areinterested in. We will use the "Work better together" link to move to this section of the help topic.Please click on the "Work better together" link.

Offline Help (cont.)We are moved to the appropriate section of the help topic. The article contains more information than can fit on a single screen so a scroll bar is provided to enable you tonavigate through the text. You can move up or down by one line at a time by clicking on the arrows at the top and bottom of the scroll bar. Tomove down or up by one screen at a time click below or above the scroll box. Let's move up by one screen.Please click above the vertical scroll box.

Offline Help (cont.)Help pages often contain links to other locations within the same topic such as the "TOP OF PAGE" link or links torelated topics. These links are also displayed in blue text. Let's follow the related topic link displayed on the current page.Please click on the "Set the editing, display, or Help language preferences." link.

Offline Help (cont.)The new topic is now displayed in the "Word Help" window. On occasion, additional information is available within a help window by "expanding" a topic. This information ispreceded by a small box with a "plus" sign and clicking on this icon will display the additional information. You can avoid having to expand individual segments by clicking on the "Show All" link or its expansion icon.

Help ToolsThe Help toolbar contains useful one step navigational aids and other options. If a button appears grey, its function iscurrently unavailable. Moving the mouse pointer over any of these items displays a text box that indicates the function of each tool. Let's view these "ScreenTips".Please move the mouse pointer over each of the buttons on the Help toolbar. Click on "Next" when you have finished.

Help Tools (cont.)The "Home" button instantly returns the user to the main "Word Help" screen. This is particularly useful when you have moved through many topics and need to quickly return to the start to find anew topic.Please click on "Home" button.

Search FieldWe are returned to the "Home" screen where we could now browse for another help topic. You can also search for help topics by entering keywords in the "Search" field below the toolbar. First we need to place the insertion point in the field.Please click in the "Search" field.

Search Field (cont.)Word Help returns a list of topics that relate to the "shortcut keys" keywords and displays the first 25 in the Resultspane. If more than 25 results are returned, the "Next" link becomes available and further results can be viewed by clickingon this link.

Table of ContentsThe help topic is displayed in the "Word Help" window and we could navigate this topic to search for specificinformation as before. Another way to find help topics is to display the "Table of Contents", which sets out help pages in a book-like format.Please click on the "Table of Contents" button.

Table of Contents (cont.)The "Word Help" window expands to display the "Table of Contents" in a separate pane to the left of the Contentspane. The Table of Contents uses a book icon to represent "chapters" of information on various topics. The current help screen is in the "Accessibility" chapter and its icon is shown as an open book with its nine helptopics listed below and marked with a "question mark" icon.

Table of Contents (cont.)The contents of a chapter may be hidden or displayed by clicking on its link or icon. Let's hide the contents of the open chapter to display more chapters on the screen.Please click on the "Accessibility" link.

Table of Contents (cont.)Some chapters in the Table of Contents contain "subchapters" as well as individual topics. Here we can see that "Coauthoring" is represented by a book icon, indicating that there are multiple topics availablefor this category. To view the contents of these folders, you also click on their links or icons until you find the help page you arelooking for.

Online HelpSo far we have only used the help files stored on the computer to find information. If you have an internet connection, online help files can also be accessed. Online help contains additional pages that have been created since the release of Office 2010 and the content is morelikely to be up-to-date.

Online Help (cont.)The "Search" list is divided into online and offline sections. A check mark next to an option indicates it is currently being used to access help topics, as shown by "Word Help" inthe "offline" section in this instance. Let's select the "All Word" option from the "Online" section. Please click on "All Word".

Online Help (cont.)The online help is now available as indicated by the "Connected to Office.com" message in the bottom right corner ofthe "Word Help" window. As the "shortcut keys" topic was active when we selected online help, the help pages for that topic have beenupdated automatically and now ten topics are displayed in the "Accessibility" chapter.

Quitting WordYou quit Word by using the "Exit" command on the "File" tab, or by clicking on the "Close" button for Word. We will use the "Exit" command to quit Word.Please click on the "File" tab.

Quitting Word (cont.)The "Exit" command is located at the bottom of the "File" tab. If you have not saved any changes to a document, Word will prompt you to save the changes before you exit. We have not made any changes to the current document so we can exit Word without being prompted.Please click on "Exit".
