Every day at Station Gallery we’re able to touch the lives and hearts of people in our community by connecting them to art and creativity through our curated exhibitions, educational programs and permanent collection. Inspiration is what you’ll find here at SG, and something that we feel is essential to all areas of life.

Engaging people through art and art-making is what we do best, and we offer many exciting events and activities that continue to connect people and art in new ways. SG is immensely grateful for all of the private and public contributions that help sustain our ability to bring art to life within our gallery walls and beyond. We would like to give special thanks to our members, donors and volunteers for helping "make art happen" at SG, and for allowing us to stand behind our statement that art is for everyone.

With gratitude,

Kerri KingCEO

If anyone ever tells you that volunteering at an art gallery will be as boring as watching paint dry, do me a favour and hit them over the head with a paint brush… a really big one!

On top of the normal day to day exhibitions, school visits, lectures and art classes that make Station Gallery the widely recognized art hub that it has become, there have been many changes that have made life at the gallery challenging. Our CEO, Kerri King is now well into her second year at the gallery and has navigated the many situations that have arisen. Several staff changes, retirements and relocations have necessitated the hiring of new faces that you will get to know over time… these are fine, talented people that will win you over in the same way they have the Board of Directors.

Having nearly completed my first year as the Board Chair, I have to tell you that this has been quite a demanding time for everyone on the gallery staff and also for the Board of Directors. It has been fun and challenging at times, but collectively we are now well-positioned to meet what lies ahead… a bright future as we approach our 50th anniversary.

SG has wonderful support from Mayor Don Mitchell and the Town Council and Staff, and a fantastic Board of Directors who have been willing to roll up their sleeves and get it done. We also have a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers and donors, who do endless amounts of work to help us meet any challenges head on.

As friends of SG, the Board of Directors and I can’t thank you enough.

Sincerely,

Noel MowatBoard Chair

We strive to build connections at SG – connections between art and our world, our members, our local communities and the wider Canadian art community.

Station Gallery's Permanent Collection was initiated in 1980, and today the gallery's Permanent Collection exceeds 350 original prints, paintings, sculpture, and mixed media works. Additionally, several permanent installation pieces were commissioned for the newly built facility into which Station Gallery moved in 2006. This background image depicts Beyond Knowing (2006) by artist Francis Muscat.

We're a non-profit public art gallery offering art classes for all ages and abilities, engaging exhibitions, family art days and fun community events. We’re open seven days a week and it’s always free to visit thanks to our donors and supporters.

Our Mission is to unleash the power of arts and culture to educate, connect and inspire our diverse communities in meaningful and compelling ways.

Our Vision is for arts and culture to flourish in Durham Region and to be recognized as being at the heart of our thriving communities.

1969It all started with an idea to preserve heritage and create a space for community activity, art making, learning and gathering.

It continues, perseveres and evolves through you.today

In 1967, a group of passionate arts enthusiasts in Whitby started a community gallery, operating under the name Whitby Arts Incorporated. In 1969, the group, supported by interested volunteers and benefactors, purchased Whitby's Grand Trunk Railway Station (1903), which had been slated for demolition. The station was saved from being torn down and moved to Henry and Victoria Streets in 1970, when the name Station Gallery was adopted.

We began a major transformation in 2005, supported by unprecedented municipal cultural commitment. The original Grand Trunk Railway Station and Port Stanley boxcar were moved across the street to our current location. Designed by Phil Goldsmith of the nationally acclaimed Goldsmith, Borgal and Company, the new addition significantly enhanced our capacity with increased exhibition, studio, collection storage and administrative space when we re-opened in 2006.

The historic and contemporary spaces are connected by a stunning sunlit glass corridor, our Patron's Walkway, where we recognize the municipal, service and corporate partners, individual donors and community members who have contributed to the success of our exhibition and education programs. With your support we have expanded in scope and activity over our nearly fifty year history, and strive to further our reach and the impact we have on our communities.

you're building on our historyBill Irwin, one of Station Gallery’s steadfast supporters recalls the move, I’m just thrilled to not only have seen it, but been part of it.

What a year! For me, 2016 shined with brilliance that imbued us all with the spirit of curiosity. Together we’ve embraced creativity in our midst, beginning with Jessica Field’s tech installations, Drawing for Art ‘16, sharply outstanding realist paintings in Keeping it Real, exuberant teen spirit in High School Confidential and the fantastic output from our SG studios in the summer’s community exhibition.

While fostering local and regional talent, SG also provides a window onto the cultural landscape beyond our region. In the autumn, we featured a special photography exhibition about how people with physical challenges inhabit their bodies. Toronto-based photographer Steve Kean created a moving suite of paired images with text: Spina Bifida – Front to Back. Kean celebrates each individual voice in his series, uncovering the beauty of human form with his camera.

Later in the season, SG audiences had a chance to get immersed in the paintings of Anong Migwans Beam. An accomplished painter in her own right, Anong descends from an honoured lineage of artist parents, Ann and Carl Beam. She bases her studio practice on M’chigeeng First Nation, Manitoulin Island. The fluid poetry of her immersive canvases swell with memory and passages of an underwater realm.

Along with artists Kean and Beam, we featured artistic output from several local art collectives. SG Rocks highlighted eight sculptors all of whom carve a place in the regional scene. The Durham College/UOIT Art Club offered vibrant artistic offerings. Celebrating fifty years in Durham Region, Ajax Creative Arts marked festivities in the community gallery. We rounded out the year with the ever-popular Annual Members’ Exhibition. SG creative members responded to a favourite theme: Glimpse.

2016 was filled with a full range of colours, ideas, values and experiences. This year’s shows are very exciting. Drop by the galleryyou’re always welcome here.

Station Gallery is an active and exciting venue for so many artistic endeavors from children’s art classes to unique exhibitions of local and national significance. As a community, we are so lucky to have such a vibrant gallery available to educate, inspire, and engage us… As an emerging artist I am very grateful to the Station Gallery team for their unending kindness, encouragement and support.

Our Community Gallery was named in memory of Jill Dyall and her generous contributions to SG as a member, donor and volunteer.

Our Heritage Gallery was named in honour of Anne Sims for her dedication to SG over 10 years of service.

We showcase dynamic and vibrant cultural production in our project spaces. The sunlit corridor hosts an exciting array of community displays, local collections and regional talent that run parallel with programming in our formal exhibition spaces.

I was approached by Olex Wlasenko from Station Gallery after he saw my work at another gallery in Toronto. He was very complimentary about my work and saw that showing it in a community gallery, like Station Gallery, would be a great way to share the message of Spina Bifida: Front to Back at a grassroots level. Working with Olex, Kerri and everyone else at Station Gallery was an even more fulfilling experience than I imagined it would be. I look forward to working with them again very soon.

We host dynamic interactive art talks onsite and in our community, led by our Curator and guest speakers to educate, demystify and delve deep

into contemporary art practices and the ideas expressed through art.

Anong Migwans Beam’s large format oil paintings incorporate a multitude of image making approaches, including photo transfer, printmaking and collage, and deal primarily with water and its relation to the functions of memory and time.

Such a rich subject and artistic approach offered significant opportunities for educational programming, tours, lectures and artistic inspiration for our program participants.

Learning is enriched when students take part in collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches to learning as well as vocabulary and skill-development through a variety of creative, interactive projects. Our approach embodies a belief that engaging young people in the arts can significantly impact their personal, social and academic development. We offer creative opportunities for young people that are hands-on, student-directed and accessible, and connect them with artists and their community outside of a formal educational environment.

you're supporting creative programming including interactive, free arts experiences in our community.

The Sg pop-Up Studio hosts free hands-on fine art activities, making art accessible to all ages and abilities at local community events. We continue to grow our audience, while at the same time educating the public about SG, its history, activities, exhibitions, and its role in the community.

Our ability to participate in events is made possible through the support of community partners, and the high energy of dedicated youth volunteers. The event roster seems to grow each year, as does the demand for us to be involved.
