East Brunswick. State Game Lands 222 is located in the Pennsylvania Game Commission's Southeast Region Wildlife Management Unit 4C. The deeded acreage for this game lands is 2,382.58 acres. The Game Land's two separate compartments are easily accessed via Game Lands Road North out of McKeansburg, from Shady Lane 523 and Catawissa Road 857.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission currently maintains one parking area on the southern parcel of SGL 222. One parking lot along the Catawissa Road 857 and parking is available along the Game Lands road that is open during the hunting seasons off of Shady Lane 523. There are 2 miles of maintained administrative roads providing for public access to the game lands by foot and vehicles. There are no designated routes for horseback riding, mountain biking or snowmobiling.
Elevations on the game lands and the surrounding areas range from 700 to 1400 feet. The game lands is approximately 98% forested, the surrounding landscape is comprised of mixed crops in the valley and forested on the mountains.
Both big game and small game are hunted on SGL 222. Deer, bear, turkey, grouse, rabbits, woodcock, and squirrels can be found on the game lands. A small but dedicated group of hunters access the very far reaches of this game lands.
The habitat management goal for SGL 222 is to maintain mixed successional conditions with a focus on practices that favor habitat requirements for white-tailed deer, bear, ruffed grouse, worm eating warbler and red crossbill. Prominent furtaking opportunities include raccoon and grey fox. In addition to practices geared toward game species, all management activities on SGL 222 will consider avian, mammalian and reptilian species of concern and habitat improvements that can be made at the local level that we believe will bolster populations of these species on landscape scale.

SPORTSMEN'S RECREATION MAP
Each time a hunter buys a hunting license, the
money he spends goes toward many facets of
wildlife management. Since 1920, close to a million
and a half aces of State Game Lands have been
acquired with these funds. Each year nearly
$7,000,000 is spent to improve wildlife habitat.
Habitat improvements enhance living conditions for
non-game birds and mammals as well as those
species which are hunted. Pennsylvania hunters
willingly share these lands with the non-hunting
public, and with few exceptions, State Game Lands
are open for general use year round. Surveys
indicate that hunting accounts for only thirty-five
percent of game land usage. The remaining sixty-
five percent is used by the general public for non-
hunting purposes.
“Working Together for Wildlife” is a Game
Commission program providing everyone an
opportunity to help support wildlife management in
the areas for endangered and non-game animals.
Monies derived from the “Working Together for
Wildlife” Program are being used in Pennsylvania to
re-introduce the osprey, river otter, bald eagle,
peregrine falcon and provide habitat for other birds
and mammals indigenous to the Commonwealth.
Construction placement of blue bird houses on State
Game Lands provides needed homes for this
beautiful songbird. Islands in the Susquehanna River
have been set aside as propagations areas for non-
game shore birds. Numerous other projects are
planned on State Game Lands and other public
