Addressing near-field tsunami hazards

Presenter
Presentation Notes
This is a picture of the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone, where the Pacific plate is subducting the North America plate. Most shallow large earthquakes in subduction zones cause tsunamis. The Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone is a place where great tsunamigenic interplate earthquakes repeat. The subduction zone has a history of generating both local and Pacific-wide tsunamis. You can see that all the coastal communities in Alaska are located dangerously close to the tsunami sources, which means that the wave will be there in minutes.

Tsunami WEA Polygons

Alaska team developed shapefiles to describe more precise locations for where a Tsunami Warning would alert via wireless emergency alerts (WEA).

Partnered with the NWS WFOs, NWS Western and Alaska Regions, emergency management, and science/GIS partners and Rocky to produce the shape files requested

Reviewed by NTWC to ensure alignment with current NTWC tsunami alerting areas and current breakpoints and NWS zones
