State-of-the-art Technologies

CIM DATABASE forms the central repository for product development. Processes are consistently supported together with the capacity to connect with other informa-tion systems and authoring tools.

In addition, numerous maintained standard links to CAD and ERP systems offer a high investment security. Standard interfaces to customary ERP systems, such as to IFS ERP, support fast usage and the highest maintainability and reliability.

This increases the quality because data is consistent and reliable, reduces turnaround times as a result of shorter wait times and the avoidance of duplicate entries and also reduces costs, for example by reducing later changes in the context of concurrent engineering.

Three central technology modules form the basis for synchronisation with ERP sys-tems as well as data and processing integration:

• The Shared Object Management of CIM DATABASE ensures rule and event driven synchronisation of objects between CIM DATABASE and other infor-mation systems. It ensures the consistency of the data, also across complex business processes.

• The ERP Talk Service Library establishes object-orientated communication between CIM DATABASE and other systems.

• The XML Gateway for CIM DATABASE communicates with other systems using the lingua franca of the IT world and makes possible the use of XML middleware solutions such as Microsoft BizTalk Server.

The technology modules make it possible to fulfil numerous needs, beginning with the simple data exchange of items and parts lists to the implementation of demanding scenarios with direct dialogue access to the ERP system, support for several plants or clients, as well as the ability to simultaneously take care of different ERP systems.

CIM DATABASE Gateway for IFSCompanies in the production industry are today faced with the challenge of combining the data from the cyclical processes associated with creative and collaborative product development with the ERP data environment used for transaction and logistics processes. The CIM DATABASE Gateway for IFS enables the seamless integration of the two system environ-ments, thus creating the prerequisite for maximum productivity.

Comprehensive Item ManagementThe CIM DATABASE Gateway for IFS supports the automatic creation of new structural components in IFS, including the provision of all relevant basic data such as the designation, material, weight and unit of quantity etc. Subsequent changes to the item master are similarly synchronised. If required, e.g. in the case of the design team suggesting a supplier, a so-called default assignment can be run through the PDM system to enable further maintenance of such a parameter in IFS based on the suggested parameter. Item revisions can also be created in IFS, which are similarly controlled by CIM DATABASE.

Online Look-up of Inventory InformationCertain item master data which is created and maintained naturally in IFS and should be made available for the developers – such as data from the material logistics division for example – is automatically made available online in the PDM system by the interface. This enables the user to call up information regarding the current inventory or outstanding production jobs directly in CIM DATABASE. Where necessary, this information can also be displayed in itemised form for individual production locations or plants.

Status SynchronisationThe integration of IFS provides a variety of options for transfer-ring preliminary and control information to IFS. For example, when a new item version is created and put into development in CIM DATABASE, the preliminary information that a new item revision will soon be released can be made available in IFS. When the new article version is then released in CIM DATA-BASE, the old revision in IFS is labelled as invalid or no longer applicable.

Shared CataloguesIn order to use compatible language when creating item data in CIM DATABASE, different catalogues from IFS are synchronised automatically. It is therefore possible, for example, to also use IFS-relevant product codes or manufacturer/supplier data in CIM DATABASE.

BOM Synchronisation The CIM DATABASE Gateway for IFS supports the synchroni-sation of the CIM DATABASE bill of material. This encompasses the group-wide or plant-specific creation of the CIM DATA-BASE bill of material as an IFS design BOM, for example. In addition to the BOM items automatically exported from the CAD system, additional items like document positions can be managed in the CIM DATABASE. In case of changes, a change report can be generated when adding, editing or deleting bill of material items. The replacement of bill of material items is seamlessly linked with the version management of CIM DATA-BASE. The effectivity management of IFS comes into play here and determines when the new version will actually take effect.

CAD and Engineering Documents at Hand in IFS Through the synchronisation of document master data and the document itself, the CIM DATABASE Gateway makes the results of product development directly available to the ERP workstation. Examples include drawings and neutral format 3D models, as well as selected project documents and Office documents in a format that can be used throughout the company, such as PDF. These documents are made available in the IFS-specific file directory and can be called up directly from IFS at the press of a button by all ERP users with respect to a certain part or assembly. A direct link between the CIM DATABASE and the IFS version management has also been implemented: with the creation or release of a new version, the corresponding document version is automatically created in IFS. In addition, the storage of several secondary representations for one document has also been made possible. Examples include TIFF and PDF for CAD drawings.

Standard Interface As a standard product, the CIM DATABASE Gateway for IFS is continuously maintained and subjected to further development in direct cooperation with IFS. New versions of the Gateway are also released when new versions of CIM DATABASE and IFS are made available. Customers and companies therefore benefit from high reliability, future security and investment protection.

AT A GLANCEIFS Gateway features:

• ItemMasterManagement Automatic creation and modification of design parts, management of item revi-sions in IFS, online retrieval of item mas-ter data from IFS.

• Real-timeInventoryInformationReliably current inventory information in the PDM and ERP systems.

• StatusSynchronisationEarly preparation of control and informa-tion data for the further development of items.

• BOMManagementCreation, modification and deletion of en-gineering BOMs in ERP, optional genera-tion of reports when editing BOM items, rights management when changing already synchronised BOMs.

• VersionandDocumentManagementResults of product development directly available at the ERP workstation, crea-tion or release of a new product version is automatically reflected in IFS, multiple representation of a document in neutral formats.
