At all the Masses this past weekend, Fr. Matt and I talked about a new endeavor called a “Mass and Prayer Journal.” At each liturgy we attend, the Lord speaks to our hearts. There are times when we recognize Him speaking to us through a thought, a word spoken in the Scriptures or in the homily, or through a song or action of the Mass. The Lord may also speak to us through the people
around us – a beautiful voice singing or the clamoring of a happy baby -- sounds of wonder and awe in our midst. Having a journal gives us the opportunity to jot down a note, a passage or a thought that struck us. Then during the week, we can ponder on what we wrote, and it helps us to enter deeper into prayer and the mystery of the Mass. The journal can also be used during the week to write down inspirations, insights and experiences that show us how the Lord is working in and through us. This “Mass and Prayer Journal can also be a resource for an examination of conscience. Perhaps, we were having a bad day and snapped at our parents, spouse, sibling or child, and it caused hurt and dissension. Writing down the word “hurt,” “swore,” or “wasted time” can be a code for the deeper reality of the sin. (That way, if someone sees your journal, they won’t know what you’re referencing.) You may use these notes when you go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. People make a lot of excuses for not going to Confession. Keeping a log of our omission and commission of sin will, hopefully, compel us to go and to be reconciled with God, self and others. Speaking of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), here are a couple of more options to help you prepare to celebrate the Sacrament. Outside of our confessionals (by the votive candles), there is a pamphlet rack with brochures on how to go to Confession or how to make an Examination of Conscience. Pick up a pamphlet and use it, or pass it along to someone who may need it. Casually set it on the kitchen table or in a work room for others to see in hopes of piquing their interest. Also, on our parish website (churchofthedivinechild.org), there are resources for doing an Examination of Conscience depending on your state in life -- that is, single, married, or young adult. Go to the “Sacraments” tab, and you will find these handy tools. Again, takes notes in your journal and bring it along to Confession. When I go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, I usually make notes beforehand. When you are in the process of preparing, you may feel confident and clear. I have found that for myself, and for many others, that once we start, we forget, either out of nervousness or trying to remember it all. Having “coded” notes is very helpful and takes a lot of stress out of the process. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the best ways for me to keep my spiritual life in order. I admit I do not like having to confess my sins, but I know that I will never grow closer to the Lord and be a good disciple without this Sacrament.
Reception of Holy Communion takes on a beauty of humility, and its effects are profoundly felt in the soul after receiving the prayer of Absolution. Many people receive Holy Communion with much sin on their soul, and it is doing damage to their spiritual and moral well-being. This damage, though not realized or understood, is the reason why people move away from attending Church and the Sacraments. It hurts too much. The sad part is that they are hurting but really don’t know what hurts. During this Lenten time, please take time to reflect on our desire for conversion so that we may grow closer to the Lord. Jesus gave us the Sacraments, the most powerful and significant avenue to grow in our spiritual life. Please encourage yourself and others to avail themselves of these sacred mysteries. It is worth it! Start taking notes, pay attention to what you write, and come and celebrate the Sacraments! In prayer with you during this holy time, Fr. Jim

5 Simple Tools for Evangelizing
Tuesday, February 27 is our Parish Day of Prayer for Vocations to the
Priesthood and Religious Life
Divine Child Parish designates the fourth Tuesday of every month as a day of prayer for vocations
before the Blessed Sacrament.

SUPPORTING PRIESTS THROUGH PRAYER
1. Discern the “seeds of the Word”
The Church Fathers spoke of “seeds of the Word” as those elements of truth and holiness that are found in every culture and religion. By recognizing elements from non-Christian sources that help explain and illustrate the Christian faith, the Fathers of the Church were able to “translate” the faith into the culture that they were seeking to evangelize. In the same way, a modern day evangelist needs to be able to listen to people in such a way to recognize the elements of truth within their worldview so that he or she can help bridge the gap between their understanding of truth and Jesus, the ultimate Truth.
2. Know the Kerygma
In my bulletin article on the 1st Sunday of Advent last year, I explained how to share the kerygma which is the basic proclamation of the Gospel. As a recap, four things to include when you share the kerygma are:
a. God’s loving plan for humanity b. Sin and its devastating consequences which led
to separation from God c. God’s response to the devastating consequences
of sin by sending his Son for our salvation d. Our response to God’s offer of salvation is to
repent, be baptized, filled with the Holy Spirit and brought into the Church
3. Share your Testimony
I also discussed sharing your testimony before on the 2nd Sunday of Advent. Please look to that bulletin for a recap.
4. Basic Apologetics
Spend time to learn the Church’s response to the most basic questions about the faith so that you can give a clear and coherent response. The resources available in the Lighthouse Catholic Media Stand in the back of the church can help with your understanding of apologetics.
5. Growth in virtue and holiness
The most convincing argument for the Gospel is a life well lived. Growing in virtue and holiness is the key to becoming an attractive herald of the Gospel. As Blessed Pope Paul VI said, “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.”
Fr. Matthew Hood
The text of the letter can be found online at the site UnleashTheGospel.org (Section 4.4.2 of Unleash the Gospel)
The idea of evangelization can be daunting to most. Evangelization includes having to put ourselves out on the line and open ourselves to being rejected. Another reason why evangelization might seem like a task too difficult to begin is the fact that we might feel like we simply don’t know where to begin. In Unleash the Gospel, Archbishop Vigneron gives us five simple tools to begin evangelizing.

PRAYER
Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat (and items made with meat) on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent.
Every person between the age of 18 and 59 (beginning of 60th year) must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal according to Cannon law & the U.S. Bishops.
Fast from gossip, criticism or insensitive, cruel comments towards others. Unplug from your electronics every day and spend time in silent prayer. Give up a habit that keeps you from being whom God is calling you to be. DC Fish Dinners. Fridays 4pm-7pm in the High School Cafeteria.
Donate to DC’s annual CSA collection. Volunteer your time at a local soup kitchen or other charity.
What is Lent? Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the 40 days of preparation for the Easter season,
when Catholics are called to deepen their spiritual lives through the practices of P r a y e r , F a s t i n g & A l m s g i v i n g .
Challenge yourself this year, and go beyond the usual practice of "giving up" something. Now is a great time to take stock of your spiritual life and to grow in it.
A Time of Grace
Divine Child offers many opportunities for you to grow clos-er to the Lord this Holy Season of Lent. See below for some

The Wild Goose Lenten series continues with the session titled, The Spirit and the Desert
“The desert is part of every Christian’s life, but it doesn’t have to be a place of despair or isolation. The Holy Spirit is present to life’s deserts and when we experience his presence it changes our spiritual life. The desert is no longer a place to be feared, but can be a profound encounter with Jesus.” Fr. Dave Pivonka

Growing faith is the work of the Church. It was the heart of Jesus’ own mission to help us human beings connect with our divine source to help us age with goodness, wisdom and peace.
One of the paths Divine Child Parish has chosen to present a catechesis is through a Faith Sharing Group. Faith Sharing Groups offer a wonderful opportunity to connect with other parishioners while enriching our faith. People involved in these groups consistently cite a greater feeling of community
as well as better clarity in what it means to live out their faith on a daily basis.
The “Living the Gospel” Thursday morning faith sharing group will use the upcoming week’s Gospel as a primer and a guide to discipleship. Come and enrich the sense of the presence of God in your life! What is the Gospel saying to you?
Our group began Thursday, February 22, 2018 from 9:15 am – 10:15 am immediately following the 8:30 am Mass in the Gathering Room. Groups will meet every Thursday, unless there is a funeral. Materials will be provided. We will be using the handout “Sunday by Sunday” by Good Ground Press. The morning will be filled with prayer, song, Gospel reading and small group discussion. No formal registration is required. There will be a sign-up sheet each day. Feel free to come as often as possible or whenever you are able. You are always welcome!
Please contact the facilitator, Linda Ferenczi, at 313-563-7137 or email at [email protected] for more details. See you soon!

DIVINE CHILD HIGH SCHOOL CAFETERIA
Meet Candidate Stephanie Schick: Growing up in the Lutheran church I had always felt that something was missing in my religious life. It wasn’t until my now husband, Nathaniel took me to Divine Child that I realized I was always meant to be Catholic. Nathaniel and I were married in the Catholic church, and we knew that we
wanted to raise our son, Ethan to be Catholic. It has taken me a few more years than I would have liked to begin the RCIA process, with moving to Texas and then back here, but I am thankful I finally started my religious journey. I am ready to finish this process and continue to grow and strengthen my relationship with the Lord with my family by my side.
Stephanie’s Sponsor Ann Randall: I am so happy that Stephanie asked me to be her sponsor. The first time I met Stephanie was after Mass, when she and Nathaniel just started dating. I’m Nathaniel’s Godmother, so I watched him grow up and I knew when I met Stephanie that day, they were meant to be together. I’m a lifelong Catholic of Polish Heritage. Many parts of the Catholic faith are inseparable from my upbringing, family traditions and heritage. RCIA is a great learning experience, helping me understand many of the reasons “why.” It is wonderful to share Stephanie’s journey and also support Stephanie and Nathaniel as they grow as a couple and a family.
St. Vincent de Paul Historic Henry Ford Fair Lane Helps Needy Recently, Karen Marzonie, Director of Landscape at Historic Henry Ford Fair
Lane, facilitated a philanthropic gesture by Ford officials, so St. Vincent de Paul would benefit from their renovation process.
“Henry Ford Fair Lane, years ago, discontinued the operation of their restaurant called The Pool, and as a result of their current, extensive renovation, kitchenware served in the restaurant needed a new home,” according to Pamela Szpytman, President of Sacred Heart/Divine Child St. Vincent de Paul. “We count our blessings that they would think of our Conference as the perfect recipient. In fact, many of our clients are clamoring to receive these kinds of items, but their financial difficulty prevents them owning something that we take for granted. Giving these folks these necessities, will allow us to restore their dignity.”
The St. Vincent de Paul warmly thanks Karen Marzonie as well as Ford officials, who made this outstanding gesture toward our Conference. When word spread about the donation, Vincentians were first awestruck, then greatly excited about the donation.
With the aid of Karen Marzonie, Anne and Tommy Morabito, Kathleen and Tim Bailey, and Mindy Delano, items such as glasses, plates, bowls, and flatware were taken from the mansion’s storage area, and carried to vehicles, and transported to basements of Vincentians who will hold the items for past and future clients. According to Vice-President, Anne Morabito, she explained to Marzonie that she would “research our Google List of clients who have placed requests for such items and then, consequently, deliver them to their ‘final home.’”
“There’s beautiful cobalt blue wineglasses, perfect for etching, for the next year’s Chili Cha-Cha, as well as two “tea services” which will be ear-marked for Chili Cha-Cha’s Silent Auction next year,” revealed Treasurer, Mindy Delano. “The Holy Spirit works in wonderful ways…and isn’t it a coincidence that this donation occurred in the week of “Random Acts of Kindness?”
With a prayer of thanksgiving to God on behalf of our donors, we joyfully continue God’s work in serving the poor and disadvantaged, the lost and forgotten. God bless you. ~~ Mindy Delano
"We have neighbors who need to hear the good news. The good news that it's possible to turn aside from ways of life that don't bring happiness and ways of life that are contrary to God's plan for us ... to live the life of Jesus Christ and be able to be God's sons and daughters." Healing Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, healer of our souls and bodies,
during your life on earth you went about doing good,
healing every manner of sickness and disease, strengthening, curing,
comforting, and consoling.
Healer of our broken souls and bodies, lay your healing hand upon me,
and by your grace restore me to good health
that I may praise you without ceasing and serve you among your holy people
for many years to come.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

“I DON’T HAVE TIME!” (…the answer we Knights are given when we invite
other men to become a Knight)
Have you ever thought about becoming a Knight, but think that being a member will consume too much of your time. Well, NO MORE EXCUSES! The time has come and the Knights of Columbus has created a pilot membership program in certain jurisdictions. Michigan has been chosen to help launch this new E-Membership Program.
Knights of Columbus E-Membership has some of the same benefits as Degreed Knighthood. Your $30.00 annual e-membership dues will include:
A Welcome Package with a membership card (giving access to KofC lounges throughout the country, but not council meetings), Columbia magazine, and a copy of the “Into the Breach.”
Access to the Online Membership Portal including its faith, values, insurance and charitable content.
Membership Communications including weekly emails from the Supreme Council on a variety of topics.
Program and Events: local, regional and national in which members may participate.
Columbia Magazine and other fraternal publications Affordable Insurance available to purchase for members,
their spouses and dependent children. Accidental Death Coverage where eligible members and
spouses are automatically enrolled in the Order’s accidental death coverage at no cost.
Annual Financial Review by a KofC insurance agent.
This is a stepping point for men to become part of this Catholic Men’s Fraternity without declaring any affiliation to a particular council or attending any meetings. When the time comes and you decide you are ready to pick a Council and attend meetings, then you would contact a council of your choosing and go through a Degree Ceremony to transition into a Degreed Knight. Your e-membership dues would be credited towards your annual council dues.
If you are interested in E-Membership, you can check out www.kofc.org/joinus. With a few clicks of your mouse, you can become an E-Member. It might be an ideal situation for young college men or men that are just too busy to become involved. Of course, the intent is to eventually have you become a degreed active knight in a council. If you are ready to take the E-Membership step, I would ask you to consider becoming a Degreed Knight of Bishop Foley Council and really experience the fraternity of Foley brothers. But the choice is yours and the E-Membership option is available.
The Knights of Columbus is a group of Catholic men who are defenders of our faith. If you have questions about E-Membership or would like more information about becoming a Foley Knight, please call our office 313-212-1835, talk to a Brother Foley Knight or go to
www.kofc.org.

Right to Life - LIFESPAN The Largest Baby Shower in Michigan
Do you know? Pregnancy Help Centers (PHCs) help women and their babies by providing healthcare, resources and accurate information---help LIFESPAN support them! Sunday, March 11, is the official kickoff date of LIFESPAN’s 29th Annual Baby Shower. Area churches and organizations are hosting “baby showers” by acting as drop-off locations for donations of baby items such as sleepers, onesies, diapers and more! Planned Parenthood’s top abortion doctors in a series of undercover videos callously and flippantly negotiated the sale of tiny baby hearts, lungs, livers, and brains. Since then, two Congressional investigations found even deeper wrongdoing and confirmed that Planned Parenthood Federation of America, several of their biggest affiliates, and multiple business partners broke the law in a profit-driven scheme. It is time for public officials to finally hold Planned Parenthood and their criminal abortion enterprise accountable under the law.

As a Catholic, what should I do with cremated remains?
While there is a preference for traditional full-body burial, as Christ was
buried in the tomb, the Church has permitted cremation for over 50 years. Cremation should respect the human body and belief in the Resurrection.
Our cemeteries offer many beautiful settings for cremation burial.
For more information, call 248-350-1900 and speak with a caring and qualified advisor or visit us online at cfcsDetroit.org.
