In this second edition of the Checklist of the birds of Spain, compiled and updated by

Spainbirds Nature Tours, the main difference is that we have excluded a number of species

considered to be extremely rare or of doubtful origin and therefore not likely to be seen in

our country. The new aim of the checklist is not to include every single species recorded in

Spain, but to provide a useful tool for taking field notes when birding in this country.

Based again on the IOC World List we have added some small changes such as the addition

of Iberian Green Woodpecker to the list as a split from the European species, and the now

accepted split between Western Subalpine and Moltoni’s Warbler. We have also reviewed

the status of some species to reflect their current populations. For example, unfortunately

now the Little Bustard is a scarce resident instead of a common resident.

Therefore, this is not an official bird checklist of Spain supported by any ornithological

society, but an alternative to make our life easier in the field, responding in part to the latest

taxonomic changes, and based very much on our experience of organizing and guiding tours

in all of the key birding habitats throughout Spain.

Based again on the IOC World List we have added some small changes such as the addition

the status of some species to reflect their current populations. For example, unfortunately

now the Little Bustard is a scarce resident instead of a common resident.

Therefore, this is not an official bird checklist of Spain supported by any ornithological

society, but an alternative to make our life easier in the field, responding in part to the latest

in all of the key birding habitats throughout Spain.
