Youth Advisory Committee
On 11 June the YAC hosted the Lt. Gov., who came to Bridgewater to view the work of the youth and to officially present the Lt. Gov. citizenship award for respectful citizenship. Youth made very interesting presentations and arranged a lovely event. On May 26 SchoolsPlus and RCMP accompanied youth the Mount Saint Vincent University, where they enjoyed a luncheon with Ministers and were honored with other youth for their receipt of the Minister’s Award for Crime Prevention. 26 May Our Youth Advisory Committee (Lun Co., RCMP and SchoolsPlus) continue work with Candace Ellicott professional designer, artist, author, NSCAD professor, and entrepreneur. Candace is supporting youth in developing awareness messages around substance use, violence, and sexual harassment and abuse prevention. Seen here is the first of three workshops that will take place to prepare the youth for materials that they will distribute at the Big Ex booth this year.

Name the Shame has been supporting the work of the Youth Advisory, above. Messaging and information around substance abuse, violence, and sexual harassment and assault. We have arranged for youth to have a booth at the Big Ex this summer. We hosted our annual GPS camp (Girls’ Power and Strength) at Brigadoon (see newsletter at end), on 21, 22, and 23 May. Our boys’ OTG (Off the Grid) camp will be in September at Brigadoon. Issues supporting prevention of harassment and abuse will be workshopped, along with other fun and learning activities. Please see the schedule attached on last page. We have received funding to support another year’s activities from Crime Prevention NS!

instructed, provided the materials, and presented the youth with kits at end of course. SchoolsPlus arranged for RCMP Constable Glenda Rubia to present an enriched workshop on safety and security following the main course. As well, with the help of Barb Cochrane, SchoolsPlus supported a visit from Claire McNally – her workshop was most inspirational! Barb donated a book about Claire to the class. Thanks Claire and Peter! Claire’s accomplishments are many, most recently as the recipient of the Terry Fox Humanitarian
Scholarship. Claire is also the subject of a book Claire’s Race, by Nancy Wilcox Richards.
South Shore Community Justice
Thanks to SSCJ for their continued fine support. Susan Himmelman, Shirley, and BPD police chief John Collyer have been meeting to plan the founding of a Bridgewater YAC, and to plan supports for substance use and abuse work with parents and teachers at schools. A meeting was held with BJSHS staff 8 May to discuss. An information meeting for students was held with Cst. Jennifer Mason, Shirley Burris, and youth at BJSHS on 15 May. A planning session for youth who agreed to move forward with the advisory will take place 13 June at 2.
Hybrid Hub Model
On 2 May, SchoolsPlus from around the province along with outreach teams attended training offered by Greg Church, RCMP. The Hybrid Hub Model http://thechronicleherald.ca/community/halifax/1212154‐hybrid‐hub‐community‐hubs‐to‐provide‐crime‐prevention‐by‐targeting‐youth‐a was explained and training in the assessment tool was provided. On 17 June, Susan Himmelman is hosting a meeting to discuss the model as it will be serving this area.

Inter‐agency Meetings
Interagency meeting took place in 27 May – we are sad to see Mary Catherine McDonnell retire, as she will be much missed. Best wishes to her in her retirement. The Bridgewater Interagency took place at BJSHS on 9 May. Queens Interagency took place at DJCWA on 2 June. Thanks to all who worked with us in these meetings this year. Wonderful forward work was able to be accomplished together!
Nova Scotia Transit
Congratulations to the committee of Sarah Haughn at North Queens, and last years’ team at New Germany High, who were invited to speak (on panel) at Transit NS Provincial Conference in Truro on 4 June. The student team developed a survey, with the outreach team, and students from many schools. New Germany students and North Queens’ students collected data to contribute to the question of transit in rural areas on South Shore, and presented this data last year at the conference. The New Germany students have since graduated. The invitation to return was much appreciated, and speaks to the good work, and the credibility of the youths’ efforts. We are proud of them. Thanks to Sarah Haughn for arranging this and for her presentation about SchoolsPlus there as well.

He taught us to find shelter and use things in the woods to survive, and to find materials to keep us away from the ground and protected. He taught us how important it was to be found, and to make sure we did not waste time in preserving body heat, and finding protection.
