This year, Derry Halloween will be different. While we normally flock to the streets to show why Derry does it best, this year we are asking you to stay home, stay safe and enjoy our digital programme of events from the comfort of your sofa (or behind it!).

We’ll have spooky tales for your Little Horrors to watch, Samhain Sessions for music lovers, and online tutorials in everything from broomstick-making to cocktail-shaking. We’ll also be bringing some ghostly friends back to life to share the story of Samhain for this year’s Awakening.

We might not be there in person this Halloween, but we CAN be there in spirit to show the world why, even in these challenging times, no one does it like Derry.

Join us in SPIRIT at www.derryhalloween.com from 28th October - 1st November.

The Awakening The Seanchaí cried out after he drank from the well

I must summon the ancestors and make a new spell

“Come one come all, spirit and mortal

to Derry we go to pass through the portal”

First to appear saw Morrigan the shape shifting crow

Unleash a multitude of Banshees with eyes all aglow

Then came the Cailleach with her potions and charms

Followed by Walter stepping from his cold coat of arms

And then the armies of Ulster on the cities walls

Again the Seanchaí cried we must illuminate the night

Burn beacons bright for after darkness comes the light

As the veil between this world and the other grows thin

It’s time for the Awakening and release Samhain spirits within.

The AwakeningBrought to you by In Your Space When: 28th - 31st October Where: derryhalloween.com

One of the highlights of this year’s Derry Halloween, The Awakening will see five of the city’s most ghostly characters join us from the other world to reveal the true meaning of Samhain… Derry-style. We’ll meet Irish witch the Cailleach, the shapeshifting goddess Morrigan, the fearsome Red Branch Knight, an enchanting, dancing Banshee, and the Derry Coat of Arms’ very own Walter the Skeleton.

With a little help from In Your Space Circus, these mythical creatures will awake from slumber to share stories, merge old and new traditions, and get us ready for THE most magical night of the year.

Community EngagementBrought to you by the North West Carnival Initiative

Community is, and always will be, at the heart of Derry Halloween. This Samhain we won’t be taking to the streets in our multitudes like we usually do, but the North West Carnival Initiative - the team behind the annual parade - will be working with local people across Derry and Strabane to keep the spirit of Halloween alive.

A series of activities will be held in the five neighbourhood renewal areas to awaken the community’s creativity – from light-based installations to prop support and Halloween window displays in several care home and community settings. There will be online tutorials in turning everyday household items into stunning costumes, and producing your very own Halloween lantern that will help ward away ghosts and spirits. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for details as a limited amount of lantern making packs will be available for free.

So get involved, have fun, look after each other and burn your beacons bright… for after the darkness, comes the light.
