We are excited to report that effective 1 January 2014, Arrow Uniforms took a majority stake-holding in Specialized Apparel in Melbourne Australia. This is yet another ANZAC union, further binding together the destinies of two creative companies from two close knit countries for the improvement of what we both do together and for our customers.

These days we have many customers with feet on bothsides of the Tasman and “about time” has been the cry of a number who have already learned about the arrangement. The SUPERIORFIT brand run by Specialized Apparel has been around for over 20 years and brings a huge fan base with it. The inferential name of SUPERIORFIT is just that you actually do get a superior fit. That’s why we were keen to extend our shareholding when the opportunity arose.

We have a lot in common as well as our ANZAC heritage. We have traditionally used the same factories and fabric suppliers. We have attended the same industry functions and think similarly. Such synergies help in the free flow of ideas and information. We have even had staff leave Arrow in New Zealand, to apply for – and get – similar positions with our cousins over the ditch.

It’s going to be a fabulous year!

The SUPERIORFIT range is something we have represented in New Zealand for the past seven years. When we think of lab coats many people immediately conjure up images of some sort of mad scientist who is insanely intelligent and tucked up in a laboratory conducting weird experiments. You know these slightly odd looking types who have a pencil behind their ears and definitely wear glasses. This is, of course, not at all true.

Lab coats are indeed worn in laboratories all around the world and are a practical mode of protection from the splashes and splatters of the various work related processes occurring daily in the workplace. But as well as protection from trace elements, general grime, or food products if you’re in the food sector it’s also about looking the part.

The wearing of lab coats goes well beyond doctors and lab technicians. Many years ago, a new maths teacher started at my old college and was immediately recognised as an excellent teacher whose calm manner and style endeared himself to the boys. One of his traits was that he wore a white lab coat. Nothing fancy about that, you may say, but he commanded respect by his bearing and – surprise, surprise – made maths enjoyable. So much so that the Head of Maths felt his mana being eroded (who despite being brainy he couldn’t control classes). The head soon invested in a white lab coat of his own in an attempt to reclaim his seniority status and bring order back into the department.

Every now and then I think its OK to crow about something and this month it is to say “Hey it’s great to be a wholly NZ owned company”. There is something about being KIWI that you can’t quite quantify. No-one can know the locals like a local and with us not only being entirely NZ owned it’s also about having staff around New Zealand.

Living in communities from Northland to the deep South the diversity of the Arrow staff means we have feet on the ground all around NZ. As well as eyes and ears in the market-place. Its not that we have anything against our friendly competitors. But the pressure from offshore owner-ship at times can be demanding, often imposing products on us that aren’t appropriate, or that don’t work in New Zealand.

That’s because us Kiwis have our own particular requirements and we know what we need. Sometimes its about the prices they want to charge and sometimes its about the fabrics they want you to wear or the styles or colours that are worn elsewhere in the world that get introduced here.

New Zealand socially is more diverse than its ever been. We have an eclectic selection of nationalities on our pay here, from Canadians, Australians, South Africans, Indians, Fijiians and Swiss. That’s pretty much representative of most New Zealand companies now but it’s also our environment that dictates what we wear. Over the past few years we have pitched for and won many tenders for uniforms for large corporations around New Zealand.

Meet Darcy Everest, recently appointed

General Manager for Arrow Uniforms.

Darcy joined Arrow Uniforms as General Manager on the 1st January 2014.

Welcome Darcy!

Darcy has spent the last seven years in Sydney managing the Australian Head

Office of OX Group International. Prior to OX, he has worked in New Zealand

for a number of companies in a wide variety of roles.

Darcy joins us at an exciting time. We have just taken a majority shareholding in

Specialized Apparel in Australia to capitalise on the Australasian opportunities.

Having a new General Manager brings an extra dimension to Arrow Uniforms,

and we are looking forward to an excellent 2014.

We look forward to bringing you the latest developments in international trends

and fabric and translate this into uniforms that your staff will love to wear. Like

the whole Arrow Uniforms team, Darcy has adopted our mission to “lower our

clients expenditure on and involvement in the uniform ordering process”.
