Q&A

ThorinsS ituated happily between

the Village area and the

Pantiles, Thorins has been

a feature of Tunbridge

Going Out spoke to

Richard Satchwell,

the owner.

STAYGO: What

are the highlights

of Thorins?

THORINS: The

service, atmosphere

and, of course, the

food! Thorins is a

great place to meet. We are about to

see our fourth couple get married,

who all met at Thorins!

SG: We’re sure some of our

readers don’t know about the

‘secret garden’.

T: The garden was refurbished last

June, with half covered and the other

half a sun trap! It gets the sun from

the moment it rises, to the moment it

sets! Then we have the covered heated

area, which is very popular in winter.

SG: We’re moving into autumn now.

What’s on the menu?

T: We have a fantastic

new menu, full of old

favourites and our takes

on British Classics, such

as the Sharer Plate,

with Mini Sausages and

SG: Any great wines?

T: Staff favourites include our

Fernlands Sauvignon Blanc from New

Zealand. And on the reds we have

a fantastic L’Enigme de Foncalieu

Cabernet Sauvignon that goes well

with our Ribs Night. Book early!

SG: Is there anything else you’d like

to add before we close?

T: We're now taking Xmas

bookings, so give us a call and

we hope to see you soon!

T unbridge

Wells is

packed

with cafés,

inviting you in to rest and

recuperate for a while. They all have

their own particular style of food and

ambience, and many of them have

pavement seating – which is still

popular with customers even in this

autumnal weather. So which ones

should you choose? There are plenty

of good ones, but here's a selection of

some of our favourites.

Staying In & Going Out

magazine spoke to Matthew Castle,

the new partner at Basil in

St John's Road.

Basil originally began two

years ago, started by Matthew's

sister Julia and her friend.

They wanted to run a café

which offered wholesome,

healthy food in a pleasant,

friendly environment and found

immediate success. However,

quite recently Julia's friend

wanted to pursue other interests,

so Matthew stepped in and

became his sister's business

partner. He's only been in the

job a couple of weeks, but he's

absolutely loving it.

Basil

CAFÉ CULTURE

For Matthew, this new challenge

is a real change of circumstances.

In his last role, he worked at The

Walt Disney Company in London,

as UK Sales Director for the video

games business. He jokes that he has

swapped Powerpoint presentations

for chalkboard specials, and he

doesn't regret it for an instant.

BASIL PHILOSOPHYOver the summer, Matthew and

Julia have worked hard to give

Basil a facelift, with a new coat of

paint and a revamp of their upstairs

seating area, complete with artistic

photographs of London's Covent

Garden. The essential philosophy,

though, hasn't changed. They serve a

varied wholefood menu, specialising

in wonderful quiches (freshly cooked

on the premises by Julia), with

salads, paninis and the inevitable

mouthwatering selection of cakes.

The Basil brownies are well known

for their quality – and you can't miss

the Victoria sponge.

PLANS FOR EXPANSIONMatthew has lots of plans, too. He

wants to develop the outside catering

side of the business – Basil recently

provided a hog roast for 120 people

with an amazing selection of fi ne

salads and artisan breads, plus apple

sauce of course! He's setting up a

loyalty card scheme and he also

wants to increase lunchtime business

with take-out salad boxes and a

delivery service to offi ces. And he'd

like to see more Basil cafés opening

one day... so watch this space!Basil, 56 St John's Road,

FRENCH STYLEOpen for breakfast, lunch and

dinner, this French-style brasserie

doesn't only do French! In fact, it

offers a range of traditional and

international dishes, with specials

on the blackboard changing every

day. As well as for more substantial

meals, it's a great place to pop in

for just a tea or coffee, or indeed a

glass of wine. It's near the top end of

Camden Road, so it's close to Royal

Victoria Place and Calverley Road

if you want to take time-out from

DIVINITY IN TRINITY...Where better to take a pre-show

supper than right inside the

theatre at Divinity Café? It's

open till 8pm on performance

nights, but that's not all... it

offers a good-value range of

snacks and light meals all day. If

you’re feeling extra good, go for

a 'Divine' sandwich with smoked

salmon, avocado, tomato and

mayo. And if you're feeling a bit

devilish, add on a treat from

the selection of cakes, bakes and

puddings. Now who's hungry?

The Spa

Railway

connects central

Tunbridge Wells with

wonderful local beauty

spots and makes a great day

out for friends and families

alike. Setting off under steam

from the old Tunbridge Wells

West station (near Sainsbury's),

the route takes you 3.5 miles

past the High Rocks, stopping

off at the High Rocks Inn, to the

picturesque village of Groombridge,

where two great pubs and the

well-known Groombridge Place are

waiting to be explored.

The original railway gradually closed

down in the 1960s but in the 1990s, it

was reopened by a group of enthusiasts

known as TWERPS – the Tunbridge Wells

and Eridge Railway Preservation Society!

And it hasn't looked back since. Indeed,

exciting plans are afoot to extend the railway

all the way to Eridge.

And look out for special events. During

October there are Days Out with Thomas. And

heading into December, watch out for the Santa

Specials – booking now!

£350,000 a day to keep

the RNLI running? And

most crew members and

lifeguards are volunteers –

often putting their own lives at risk.

So, if you’re looking for an alternative

reason to go out and about, here’s an

opportunity. The Tunbridge Wells

helpers. Here’s what they told us...

“We have many dedicated supporters

but we are looking for younger people

to help. Five or six hours A YEAR from

running. If you can spare a few hours

by shaking a collecting box, we’d love
