Let’s Revise
1. Location and Extent
i. Location:
The location of a place can be described with the help of only one parallel and one
meridian.
ii. Extent:
The extent of a region can be described with the help two parallels and two
meridians at the extreme ends of the region.
The extent of linear features like a river, road, etc. is described by mentioning the
latitude and longitude of their terminal points.
2. Some Important Parallels:
i. Tropic of Cancer: Parallel at 2330 N of Equator.ii. Tropic of Capricorn: Parallel at 2330 S of Equator.iii. Arctic Circle: Parallel at 6630 N of Equator.iv. Antarctic Circle: Parallel at 6630 S of Equator.v. North Pole: Parallel at 90 N of Equator.vi. South Pole: Parallel at 90 S of Equator.
3. Temperature Zones:
i. Due to the duration and intensity of sunlight, different temperature zones are
formed on the earth which gives rise to pressure belts.
ii. Regional diversity is observed in the animal and plant life due to the variation in the
intensity of sunlight.
4. Some Important Meridians:
i. 0 Meridian:
a. It is also known as Prime Meridian or Greenwich Meridian.
b. It is used to fix the Global Standard Time (or Greenwich Mean Time).
c. It is used to co‐ordinate standard time of other countries.
ii. 180 Meridian:
a. It lies opposite to the 0 meridian/prime meridian.
b. International Date Line is marked with reference to this meridian.
5. Great Circles:
i. All the pairs of opposite meridians form Great Circles just like the Equator.
ii. All the Great Circles are useful for finding the minimum distance between any two
places on the surface of earth.
