Structural steel I and H sectionsBS EN 10034:1993

Rolling tolerances for str uctural steel and I and H sections

Section height (h)

The deviation from nominal on section height

measured at the centre of web thickness shall be

within the tolerance given in table across.

Out of sq uareness (k + k¹)

The out of squareness of the section shall not

exceed the maximum given in table on page 46.

Flange width (b)

The deviation from nominal on flange width shall

be within the tolerance given in table across.

Web off c entre (e)

The mid thickness of the web shall not deviate

from the mid-width position on the ange by more

than the distance (e) given in table on page 46.

Web thi ckness (s)

The deviation from nominal on web thicknessmeasured at the mid point of dimension h shall be

within th tolerance given in table across.

Straightness (qxx x q yy)

The straightness shall comply with therequirements given in table on page 47.

Flange thickness (t)

The deviation from nominal on flange thickness measured at the quarter flange width point shall be

within the tolerance given in table across.

Toleranc es on mass

The deviation from the nominal mass of a batch or

a piece shall not exceed ± 4.0%.

The mass deviation is the difference between

the actual mass of the batch or piece and the

calculated mass.

The calculated mass shall be determined using a

density of 7.85 kg/dm³

Toleranc es on lengt h

The sections shall be cut to ordered lengths to

tolerances of

a) ± 50mm; or

b) + 100mm where min lengths are requested.

L represents the longest useable length of the

section assuming that the ends of the section have

been cut square.(see figure at top of page 45)

Steel Explained

Chemical Elements

Term

CARBON (C) The most important element in steel is Carbon. It is in steels which have to behardened by quenching. The hardness and strength of materials is controlled by thedegree of carbon present.

CHROMIUM(Cr)

Hardenability is increased by the level of Chromium, it also improves resistanceto abrasion and wear. An essential element in stainless steel and heat resistant

materials, where up to 30% may be present.

LEAD (Pb) Machinability can be increased by the addition of up to 0.30% lead. If distribution ishomogenous, it has little effect on the physical properties of steel and does not effectthe weldability.

MANGANESE(Mn)

A mild deoxidant, expelling the sulphur and oxygen away to the slag, it also increaseshardenability and tensile strength, but decreases ductility. It combines with sulphurto form globular manganese sulphides, essential in free cutting steels for goodmachinability.

MOLYBDENUM(Mo)

Hardenability is increased and the risk of temper brittleness is reduced in low alloysteels. When added to stainless steels it increases resistance to corrosion. It is also

used in the high speed tool steels.NICKEL (Ni) Carbon steels with up to 5% nickel have increased tensile strength, toughness

and hardenability, without losing ductility. An alloying element, it is often usedin combination with chromium and molybdenum. Between 8% and 14% nickel iscontained within stainless steel.

PHOSPHORUS(P)

Its embrittling effect is often regarded as an undesirable impurity. It does howeverincrease the tensile strength of steel and improves machinability. Phosphorus doesnot usually rise above levels of 0.05% in most steels.

SELENIUM &TELLURIUM

(Se,Te)

A selenium content of 0.15/0.25% is typical in free machining stainless steel.Tellurium can be added to leaded freecutting steel in levels of 0.03/0.05% to further

improve machinability. The presence of both these elements improves machinability.SILICON (Si) A powerful deoxidiser, it is present in most commercial steels within a range of

0.05%/0.35%. Although Silicon Manganese Spring Steels, Acid Steels and heatresisting steels contain higher levels.

SULPHUR (S) When steel is high in sulphur and low in manganese it can have an adverse effect onimpact properties. High levels also result in poor welding quality.

TUNGSTEN(W)

Used as a main element in high speed tool sets. It enables the steel to maintain hightemperatures, making it suitable for cutting tools.

VANADIUM When used in combination with other alloying elements it can improve softening at

high temperatures and fatigue stress, by restricting grain growth, rening grain size, increasing hardness and resistance to shock loading.

Heat Treatm ent of Steel

Term

ANNEALING Softening steel to improve machinability and cold working properties by heatingin a furnace holding at a suitable temperature and then cooling. This improvesmachinability and cold working properties.

CARBURISING Steel that is low in carbon is heated to around 900 degrees Celsius in a mediumcontaining carbon in a solid, liquid or gaseous state. This diffuses carbon in to the

surface of a steel that is low in carbon

HARDENING Steel is heated to a temperature slightly above the critical range, it is then soaked atthat temperature for a given time, before being quenched in a suitable medium suchas water, oil or air.

INDUCTIONHARDENING

Components are heated by high frequency induction, then quickly quenched toincrease surface hardening. Results will depend upon the carbon content of thesteel, but best results are achieved on steels with a content range of 0.40%-0.45%.

NITRIDING Nitrogen is introduced in to the surface of the steel by absorption, producinga very hard case. Hardness can be increased up to 1100VPN, dependent on

specications.NORMALISING According to analysis of the steel, it is heated to between 800-900 Celsius, held

at temperature before being cooled in still air. This improves the mechanicalproperties, relieves internal stresses and renes the grain size.

SPHERODISING Often used for high carbon steels, it is a form of annealing. It assists machinabilityby creating the softest state possible.

STRESSRELIEVING

Stresses are removed following cold work or rough machining, work must be carriedout at temperatures between 600 -650 degrees Celsius.

TEMPERING Following hardening, tempering removes brittleness, reduces hardness and relievesstresses. Carried out in temperatures between 150-650 degrees Celsius, the steelmust then be cooled in still air or quenched.

Continental or European Sections

European I Beams

(IPE/IPN)

European Wide Flange Beams

(HE/HL)

European Channels

(UPN/UAP)

The IP range is very similar to

the UK Universal Beams.

i.e.

IPE 180 (180 x 91 x 18.8kg/m) issimilar to Universal Beam 178 x

102 x 19 kg/m

The HE/HL range is similar to

our Universal Columns and

bigger Universal Beams.

i.e.

HEB 200 (200 x 200 x 61kg/m) issimilar to Universal Column 203

x 203 x 60kg/m

HEA 600 (590 x 300 x 178kg/m)

is similar to Universal Beam 610

x 305 x 179kg/m

Unfortunately there are very

few direct comparisons on the

channel range.

General Rules

With European sections is the letter usually depicts what type of section it is.

U = channel I = beam H = column

This only deviates on the bigger and heavier HE/HL range.

The weights on the sections are depicted by letters, with AA being the lightest. The higher the letters

the heavier the section is going to be.

The Channel sections are either UPN, taper ange - which is all but obsolete now in the UK, or UAP

which are parallel ange .
