STEEL STRUCTURES ‐ DESIGN OF THE JOINTS
Summary:1) Welded or bolted connections are two possibilities - it is more advisable to adopt welded
connections made in the workshop and bolted connections on site
2) Joints must be simple and easy to execute both in the workshop and on site - good structural performance should be assured but also the required execution quality
3) Fully welded connections will always be rigid joints
4) Bolted connections will be more or less flexible depending on the allowable bending / joint rotation capacity
5) The design of the connections must take into account: a) the requirements in terms of structural performance, b) the design carried out for the elements (end restrained or pinned supports), and c) the stiffness and strength criteria the structure should meet

Summarycomparisonbetweenweldedandscrewconnections
Criteria Welded joints Bolted joints
Deformability Very rigid (usually do not contribute to the deformability of the structure)
They can contribute considerably to the deformability of the structure (in particular, when using non prestress bolted joints)
Execution Preferable on workshop They can be executed both in a workshop or on site; less demand in terms of labour specialization
Aesthetics “Simple” connections, compact and with reduced visual impact
Connections with greater visual impact, with a more “industrial” aspect
Dismantling Difficult operation, usually requiring the need to cut elements
It is not required to cut elements (important aspect if it is intended that the structure can be erected elsewhere)
