Fall 2012 THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF ST. JOHN’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH By Patricia Politowicz A wonderful thing happened on October 3. It wasn’t just another Wednesday night dinner. It wasn’t just another potluck supper. It wasn’t even just another Stewardship Kick- off. It was a chance to see how true stewardship reaches across, not only miles, but years. As a community, we were blessed to have Bishop Charles von Rosenberg as our guest speaker. He spoke fondly and eloquently of his years at St. John’s and how the love and support from this congregation allowed him to achieve so much in his life. He presented how we can embrace stewardship fully and boldly and how it makes a difference far down the road. Our Stewardship campaign leaders, Billy and Barb Richardson, have done a marvelous job initiating and maintaining this every member canvass. Their leadership and how they are acting out their stewardship is what we can strive for. The meal they organized was outstanding and they didn’t do it alone. There were many hands that helped. Thank you all. We were fed in more ways than one that evening. Food is food. You need it to live. If you don’t eat, you won’t live very long. Living is a good thing. Spiritual living is a good thing too. How do you feed it? By being a part of a larger entity, a spiritual community, a church. The church is the place where we, as that community come together and stand shoulder to shoulder and worship Christ. We become one, and are one, with God. We are fed and we feed each other. Not just with turkey and dressing and really, really good desserts, but with knowing that work- ing together brings a great result. Embracing Stewardship Fully and Boldly Anna and Bishop Charles von Rosenberg share a moment with Stewardship co-chair Barbara Richardson at the October Stewardship Dinner. See STEWARDSHIP, Page 2

THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF ST. JOHN’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

By Patricia Politowicz A wonderful thing happened on October 3. It wasn’t just another Wednesday night dinner. It wasn’t just another potluck supper. It wasn’t even just another Stewardship Kick-off. It was a chance to see how true stewardship reaches across, not only miles, but years. As a community, we were blessed to have Bishop Charles von Rosenberg as our guest speaker. That communal interaction is Stewardship. It is taking action on what we speak of during our worship service. It is not just saying, but doing. Time, talent and treasure (I like to call them our three

graces) are about acting out our spiritual thanksgiving for all the blessings God grants us. And St. John’s Church has so very much to be thankful for. As you prayerfully consider how to pledge your three graces, don’t be afraid to be bold and step up to the question, “Are you em-bracing your stewardship fully?” It’s easy to say, “I don’t have time, I have no talents, I need that extra latte in the morning.” Amazing miracles happen when we boldly act in faith and love. All we need to do is step out in faith and somehow God manages to make the pieces fall into place. Because in the end, it’s all about Him anyway.

Denise Giles, founder of the Cumberland Interfaith Hospitality Network in Fayetteville, gave an inspiring talk at a recent Wednes-day evening dinner in Hauser Hall. She thanked all parishioners at St. John’s, and especially coordina-tors Fred and June Kohlhepp, for their ongoing help with the CIHN program. The Kohlhepps introduced the program to St. John’s in the fall of 1998 and have continued over the years. “It’s time to give someone else a chance,” Fred said as he introduced new volunteer coordinator Melene Hatcher. “We’ll still be here” he said. “We just need a little break, and Melene will give us that break.”

A rededication service for all Altar Guild women was held dur-ing the 10:30 a.m. church service on October 14. Following the ser-vice, the Altar Guild members met in the Kyle House for a luncheon and formal change of leadership. Lenora Chandler and Arleen Young completed their year of ser-vice as chairwomen, and Carmen Guzman and Carol Orr were wel-comed as the new chairpersons for the 2012-2013 church year.

On a brisk autumn morning, volunteers gathered at St. John’s to “Stop Hunger Now.” Although this motley crew of adults, youth, and children did not have much in common, they came together for a common purpose. They were there to prepare meals for the hun-gry of the world. We may have started off with 500 pounds of rice and 1,000 pounds of soy mix, but two hours later we had added dried vegetables and a vitamin packet to those small zip-lock pack-ages and created a nutritious meal for six peo-ple. It was like a well–oiled machine: a cup of rice, a cup of soy, a scoop of dried vegetables, and a vitamin packet. Every time we eclipsed the 1,000-meal mark, a gong would sound as if to encourage us on. Calls for “runners” (the kids who move the bags from one table to the other) were only interrupted by requests for refills on the raw material being used. When it was all said and done, 65 Chris-tians were walking taller knowing they had followed Jesus’ command to “feed my sheep.” It was a lot of work, but it was a good feeling.

Choir members showed up for choir practice (on time) Sunday,

September 9, for a surprise breakfast party in honor of their beloved

choirmaster Patrick Murphy O’Briant. As he celebrated (?) his 60th

birthday, they reminded him that he had just moved from the smaller

ranks of the younger members of the choir to join the more mature

and plentiful members! Among those who showered him with cards,

a cake, and novelty gifts are, from left, Tommy Vick (seated), Denise

Varela, Pat, and Pawley Shields, an honorary member of the choir.

The votes were in, the money was counted, the ver-dict....Hallelujah! The race was close and the stakes were high, but I hope, by now, that you all have seen Hal Broadfoot’s ex-cellent new SHORT do! The Preschool raised over $1,000.00 with our “Keep It or Cut It” Fundraiser. Votes were sent in from as far away as Texas and several contribu-tions came in after the haircut as a show of appreciation! The Preschool is full of gratitude for the tremendous support our church and com-munity have shown us this fall. We are especially grateful to Hal/Fabio for being such a good sport! The standard has been set for our future Vestry liaisons. We are thinking “Tattoo or No Tattoo” for next fall...

Snip Snip Goes the Barber;

It’s high fives following the procedure!

St. John’s celebrated its annual Blessing of the Animals service in the outdoor chapel September 29. Above, The Rev. Robert Alves led pet owners present in asking God’s

blessing and the protection of Saint Francis on all animals, especially those present. Among the prayers were those for the privilege of being able to treasure and care for animals

and for the service and love they give us to ease and comfort our lives. Pictured upper left is Barbara Shumway with her

dog and, lower left, Jennifer Elmatti with two pets.
