Term 2Issue 18

10 June 2016

Dear Stella Community,

Storm hits us

This week I would like us to pray for the families touched by the storms that have hit our shores. To the families affected on the Northern Beaches as well as the families of those who have lost their lives in floodwaters and the ocean, we offer our prayer.

Stella Maris’ Strategic Plan

The Saturday meeting of the Board, Board Committees and Leadership Team was a good opportunity for reflection and discernment about the key priorities for the College as we move into the future. Members of the College community should be pleased that such planning is underway. We are about to begin our building program in December and our focus needs to remain on ensuring that we are balancing that development with the ongoing pastoral and teaching and learning needs of the College.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Chiara Tisano who has been selected to travel to Italy as part of the SCCE student exchange program. We wish her well as she travels over to improve her language skills from September to January.

Refugee Week

Attached to the Newsletter is an invitation to the Good Samaritan Congregational Centre in Glebe on 24 June to see a screening of Freedom Stories, a documentary about asylum seekers who arrived in Australia in 2001 and how they have built a new life here and what they are bringing to the community. The screening marks Refugee Week which runs from 19 - 25 June. It has been organised by the Reference Group for the Good Samaritan Social Response to Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Human Trafficking. Sister Sarah Puls sgs has visited us at Stella to speak to the girls about her work in this area.

A Prayer to Mary in times of trouble

Mary Mother of God, Look kindly on all who

are suffering or fighting against difficulty.

Look kindly on those who are separated from

someone they love. Have pity on the

loneliness of our hearts. Have pity on those who are weeping, on those

who are praying, on those who are fearful. Holy Mother, please

intercede for all of us and bring us hope and

peace with justice. Amen.

Friday, 24th June 2016

Commencing at 5.00pm

A light supper will be served after the screening.

The remarkable documentary 'Freedom Stories' tells the heartening stories of people who arrived in Australia seeking asylum around 2001. This landmark feature documentary charts the challenges and successes of finding safety in Australia, and building a new life, while dealing with the feelings conjured up by what has been left behind. The producers of Freedom Stories have offered a limited number of educational copies of Freedom Stories to be featured in Refugee Week events. The stories aim to help all Australians better understand the great resilience and contributions of refugees.

A Stella Star

A Stella StarParents, keep an eye out in your mailbox for some good news!

We are well aware that the good news about your daughter doesn’t always make it home. I’m sure you often get the reply of ‘nothing’ to the question of ‘what did you do at school today?’

As a way of congratulating our girls who are going above and beyond, who are demonstrating what it means to be a Stella Girl and who are doing their best, we are sending home postcards telling you what great things they’ve done.

The image on the card was created by Katarina Jones, Year 10, and beautifully depicts a Stella Girl.

Staff will be sending these out throughout the year.

MissionLast year Stella Maris held an Awareness Walk to develop empathy for children in the Philippines and other countries who walk long distances for the opportunity of an education.

This year, we are having a ‘Stella Sleep Out’ in the middle of Term 3 to empathise with rough sleepers and raise money for the Good Samaritan Inn and the Kinder School in the Philippines.

We don’t want to be a school that simply raises money for charity. We want to develop understanding and compassion in our students by providing these opportunities. We are committed to our Good Samaritan partners as we know that 100% of the money goes directly to the people in need and our students have opportunities to visit these communities during their time at Stella.

Information about the Sleep Out, 26 August

• This is a voluntary event • Students need to register for the even on Moodle (information will be emailed) • Due to limited space the experience is only open to Stella students • There will be a security guard and adequate staff present on the night • Students will experience a ‘soup kitchen’ for dinner • Students are required to raise sponsorship for the event so payment doesn’t fall on their parents. The minimum amount required for a space is $50/person • Students bring their own sleeping bag and mat or cardboard to sleep on • The Sleep Out will conclude on Saturday morning, 27 August, by 9am (before breakfast)

TREE OF LIFE PERFORMANCE: STORIES BY YOUNG REFUGEES

Tree of LifeYear 9 had the privilege of attending the Tree of Life performance on Thursday to hear real life stories from refugee teenagers who have fled to Australia from Iraq, Syria and Sudan. It was incredible to hear from students the same age who have experienced such tragedy but responded with hope, humour and resilience. These are the types of meaningful experiences that shape our students into empathetic young ladies and open their eyes to the world around them.

“On Thursday we went on an excursion to watch a small play called the Tree of Life 2016 which was put on by young refugees. The play showcased the stories of teenagers. These stories contained why they had to come to Australia and the physical and emotional journey they took. Each story was unique and different and made us really think about how lucky we are and how we are so oblivious to what is going on in the world around us. At times the play was very serious and made some ‘tear up’ listening to the children tell their story as they have lived experiences I never thought would happen. Whilst most of the stories were serious some of them were extremely funny and made everyone laugh to the point of crying. The performers did a great job of the whole production and I wish them well in their lives and future in Australia.”

Jacinta Cabrera, Yr 9

“On Thursday 9 June, Year 9 had the privilege of watching Tree of Life. Tree of Life is made up of a group of refugee high school students who give us insight into their life via drama and theatre. Their stories from their homelands are confronting, touching and made us cry tears of laughter and sorrow. The best thing about Tree of Life is that it takes us out of our safe, cosy bubble of the Northern Beaches by transporting us to a whole other world of war and fear. The show makes us question our values and we all came out of it a more informed and empathetic group of girls. If you are a student or parent reading this, I highly suggest you come to future shows. The tickets are inexpensive but the experience is priceless.”

Carla Krnel, Yr 9

CHOOSING A LANGUAGE FOR YEAR 8 Stella Maris College students in Year 7 have the opportunity to select one language from Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese or Spanish to study in Year 8. Students will be given half-hour single language lessons from 15 to 23 June in order to be better informed to make the choice of language. We hope that students and parents will take some time to research and consider the benefits of the languages offered. We advise against choosing a language on the basis of friendship groups.

Language selection is due on Moodle on Friday, 24 June.

It is a 2-step process:

1. A Moodle survey in PC on Friday, 24 June, for students to click on their language choice. This will determine which language has 2 classes. All other languages will have one class.

2. From 2pm on Friday 24 June, students do the Moodle survey to select a language. It is on a ‘first in’ basis

If the first choice is full, students will need to click on their second or third choice.

Preference will be given to students who have a background in a language, i.e, the language is spoken at home (not by a neighbour or relative) or the student has lived in the country where the language is spoken.

Students must bring a note from a parent to Ms Molloy by 17 June, outlines the background. These students will be placed in the class first and will not do the 2pm Moodle selection.

It will be explained at the Yr 7 Year meeting on 16 June. The study of a Language is a requirement of the Board of Studies. The language must be studied for 100 hours in a 12-month period. At Stella Maris College, this takes place in Year 8. The rationale for this policy is captured in the syllabus documents where it says:

“Moving between countries, cultures and languages has become more commonplace because of globalization, increased ease of travel and advanced information and communication technologies. High quality education in languages enables students to respond positively to the opportunities and challenges of their rapidly changing world.

The study of languages provides opportunities for students to become more accepting of diversity, more respectful of others and more aware of their place in the international community.”

The study of a Language provides students with opportunities for continued learning and for future employment, both domestically and internationally, in areas such as commerce, tourism, hospitality and international relations.

Chinese Chinese is the language of communication of approximately one quarter of the world’s population. It is one of the official languages of the United Nations. Amongst the many spoken varieties of the language, Mandarin/Putonghua, or Modern Standard Chinese, is pre-eminent. Chinese is recognised as one of the fastest growing languages in New South Wales and has one of the largest groups of non-English background speakers in Australia.

China has a significant profile in economic, political and cultural developments, both globally and in the Asia-Pacific region. Australia has a strong connection through trade, political and cultural contacts with the People’s Republic of China and other nations where Chinese communities are important contributors to their growth and diversity.

The ability to communicate in Chinese contributes significantly to the sociocultural and economic understanding between Australia and Chinese-speaking countries and enables students to gain insights into the contributions that have been made by Chinese-speaking communities to Australian, and indeed, to global society. For background speakers, this valuable learning experience is further enhanced by the opportunity to maintain and develop their Chinese language skills.

French French is one of the major languages in the world. It is used in parts of Europe, Canada, North America, Africa, the Middle East, the West Indies, the Indian Ocean region and the South Pacific region close to Australia, namely New Caledonia, Tahiti and Vanuatu.

French has been, by tradition, the language of diplomacy. It is an official language in a large number of international organisations including the United Nations, the European Union, the South Pacific Commission, the Organisation for African Unity and the Olympic Games. It boasts a strong presence at international conferences.

For more than 200 years, Australia has had strong connections with France. In the twenty-first century, a strong relationship continues to exist through trade and investment, communication technologies, education, scientific and technology research and cultural exchange.

Italian Italian is the official language of Italy, San Marino and the Vatican City and one of the official languages of Switzerland. It is also spoken in many other countries in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australasia. Italian, English and other European languages share a common linguistic link with Latin.

Italy plays a significant role in global economic and cultural developments. Australia has strong cultural, political and trade connections with Italy. The Italian language is widely spoken in Australia and many opportunities exist to hear and use the language in real-life situations. The Italian community is well established and continues to make major contributions to contemporary Australian society in the areas of culture, industry, trade and agriculture.

For students with an Italian background, the study of Italian consolidates and reinforces language skills needed to maintain links with the Italian-speaking community. It provides them with opportunities to experience and deepen their understanding of the traditions and culture of the country of their heritage.

Japanese The study of Japanese provides access to the language and culture of one of the global community’s most technologically advanced societies and economies. It also introduces students to an important part of the rich cultural tradition of East Asia. Through experience of the Japanese language system and cultural history, students gain valuable perspectives on art, music, customs, beliefs and the ways of thinking of Japanese people.

Japanese has been identified as one of the priority languages in the Asia-Pacific regions to be taught in Australian schools. There are sister city agreements between the two governments, providing Australian students with opportunities to host Japanese students and to visit and study in Japan.

Australia and Japan are members of the Asia - Pacific Economic Community. Japan is one of Australia’s leading trad-ing partners. It is therefore important for Australia’s long-term economic and social future that its relationship with Japan continues to be enhanced.

Spanish Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It is the official language of 21 countries and one of the official languages of the United Nations and the European Union. Spanish, English and other European languages share a common linguistic link with Latin.

Australia has strong connections through trade with Spanish-speaking nations, particularly those within the Asia-Pacific region. The Spanish language is widely spoken within the Australian community. Opportunities exist to hear and use the language in real-life situations. Spanish-speaking residents of Australia make significant contributions to the economic, intellectual, cultural and social affairs of the nation.

For students with a Spanish-speaking background, the study of Spanish consolidates and reinforces language skills needed to maintain links with Spanish-speaking communities. It provides them with opportunities to experience and deepen their understanding of the traditions and culture of their heritage.

Jennifer Murray, Head of Languages

Visual Arts News: Art Club. Each Thursday lunchtime this semester the Visual Art Department has been running our Year 7 and 8 Art Club in D31. Throughout the semester the students have learned drawing techniques, using graphite, coloured pencils, smudging sticks, charcoal and mixed media. As well as drawing we spent several weeks on Water colour techniques and painting skills. A number of the students experimented with Etching on foam boards from which we made some interesting prints. Above: Anna Gordon, Isla Herbert , Yasmin Elboz Our creative Stella girls are also busy girls so the Art Club activities are designed to be one off activities which can be completed in one lunchtime period. When the task is complete the Students glue their work into their Concertina Artist books. Many of the students have a beautiful collection of works already.

Art club has also grown into being a “Studio time” which is a dedicated time and place for students to finish off Visual Arts course work with the assistance of the Art staff. In Semester 2 we will continue to run Art Club in D31, we will again have a focus on drawing and painting skills. We are looking forward to seeing the students learn skills and techniques that will enable them to realise their creative ideas.
