What is Duchenne Muscular
Dystrophy (DMD)?
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is
an inherited disorder that involves
rapidly-worsening muscle weakness.
• It occurs in approximately 1 out of
every 3,6000 male infants.
• Female infants could be carriers too.

• DMD is caused by a mutation in the
gene that produces an important
muscle protein called Dystrophin.
What is Duchenne Muscular
Dystrophy (DMD)?
• As this is an inherited
disorder, risks include a
family history of DMD.
• It is characterized by
rapid progression of
muscle degeneration,
which eventually leads to
loss of movement and
even death.
How boys are affected?

What are the symptoms?
• The symptoms for DMD include
mental retardation , muscle
weakness, difficulty with motor
skill, and frequent falls.
• These symptoms occur before
the victim turns 6, and may
gradually continue to worsen.
• By the time the patient reaches
age 10, he may need braces to
aid walking, or may not be able
to walk at all.
• Most do not cross 25 years.
There is
NO KNOWN CURE for DMD in modern medicine.
Treatment aims to control the symptoms
in order to improve the quality of the
victim’s life.
Activity is encouraged, as remaining
inactive could worsen DMD.
Physical therapy may be helpful to
maintain muscle strength and function.
